    Phone Dying

Got my wife a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge because it supports cards and battery swaps. Nice phone, not too much bigger than an S5.

    Can't find bluetooth gateway

You'd think this would be an easy thing. -Pairs to phone in both handsfree (HFP) and audio (a2dp) modes -has input for mic (XLR ideally but anything will do) -has output for speakers (RCA ideally but anything will do) In other words, I want just the BT part of a modern car head unit. I can't...

About a year ago I had good fun nearly completely disassembling our washing machine. One of the first Samsung units (10 years old now?). I'd done quite a number on the dryer a couple times in the past when converting it from Natural Gas to Propane and back. Funny that in my head they are still...

That is very respectable and offers a "4k" (3840x2160) screen. I'll be considering one of those when I sell the W540. Thanks for the link!

    NSK2400 build notes

Apple laptops have some sexy hardware, and if you are looking for higher resolution screens in lower-priced units you could squint and make a value argument. They format and take Win8.1 just fine.

The paradigm needs to change I think. Most people are happy enough with the price and performance of the camera in their budget. Things will settle slowly, then there will be a price war without real innovation, then something else will take over. Light field cameras? Video features? And as...

Windows Defender should remove it automatically now, and Lenovo released a dedicated removal tool, including source code and license.

    Automating an install?

I would find it interesting, purely from a theoretical perspective. I might even run through it once just to see what happens. But with 1.5 people supporting 450 workstations in 9 offices using 7 major systems across 8 departments, I just don't see a formal system being manageable. Particularly...

    Automating an install?

Wow, you put a lot of fancy letters in there ;) No SOW, no SOP, IT wasn't even involved in the RFQ. I was informed which software the department had decided on (which was the first I'd heard that they were considering migrating from the existing software), and set up a lab for the trainer. At...

    Automating an install?

They don't even have proper documentation, much less a script. I was running a screen cap when their support guy remoted in and did it once. I'm building the doc from that. Hard to blame them, the app was less than $250,000. What can you expect for such a pittance?

    Automating an install?

That's pretty much what I was thinking, thanks. The IIS install is a PITA mainly because of the exact features that need to be selected (and deselected), probably 25 checkboxes out of the 40 available. There is a main database and a main webserver, but this program allows an "offline mode"...

    Automating an install?

I have a new program that I need to deploy to 40 Win7/8 machines. It requires IIS with specific options and SQL Express with specific options before I can even begin the install of the program itself. These machines are not part of a domain, and I currently have SQL Express and the program on a...

One of the wonderful things about a NAS is that your storage can live elsewhere. I keep mine in the garage. It is fairly quiet until I start hitting it hard, then the grinding sound is noticeable.

I prefer to keep the same drives in a unit (first round is all bought at the same time), but many have ended up with mixed drives (some even different capacities). I've never had any issue or measurable performance impact.

I'm a fan of the Synology units as well. But don't pull the plug on them regularly without doing a proper shutdown. It is a computer, they like to be shutdown properly. In fact, just set the drives to spin down at an appropriate time and leave the unit on so it can perform diagnostics and...

At the work facilities with such equipment there is usually a power failure every quarter or so, and that is more frequent than any testing I'd bother with. The most common issue with the system is a mechanical with the generator. The most common minor issue is someone plugging their computer...

Nope. All my work sites of any significance have auto-switching UPS and gensets with giant fuel tanks. The batteries are only ~15 minutes (long enough to troubleshoot the genset or get some gas worst-case). Normally the generator goes from off to producing power in ~30 seconds, and auto-tests...

Power outages are so rare here it isn't worth it to have one wired in, though I'll probably put in the hook up for that when I put in solar. This was the first power outage in years, and it only lasted about 25 minutes.

I don't care about reach, but speed/versatility is important. I have managed to get rid of most of my EF-S lenses, but I'm just as likely to shoot a bicycle or auto race as a product shoot. My big question is who were these people that needed more than 20MP? Anyone here feel they didn't have enough? If you do really need all 50MP, how much trouble do you have with lens quality? Is Canon L glass all good enough to not impact things at these kinds of resolution?

Some mining equipment requires you to provide the PSU separate from the miner. I have a shelf of 1kW PSUs for that reason. Of course, circuit management becomes an issue beyond that. Then again, it shows peak efficiency at 50%, so if you were drawing 1kW continuously (as I am), it might make...

If your phone must share the space in your pants with other things, and if you can't get away with cargo pants, you might want to stay away from the Note series. I'm honestly considering a lateral move from an S5 to a Note 4, but the phone has an entire pocket of my (baggy) jeans to itself.
