Scientists warn California could be struck by winter ‘superstorm’ A group of more than 100 scientists and experts say in a new report that California faces the risk of a massive "superstorm" that could flood a quarter of the state's homes and cause $300 billion to $400 billion in damage. The...

    Technet Advice

Buying Technet here is a hassle. There is no online option, and since it's a "slow-moving item", it is special order and has to be paid for in advance. MS ships the products ordered once a month, and it arrives on a slave-powered dhow from wherever. I paid on Nov 4, and have Technet 2010...

    dSLR thread

First, a correction: I must have been higgledy-piggledy when I posted; it's the 24-70 f2.8 I have, not the 17-24. I meant to say that 200mm hardly seems to bring the subject closer. I really haven't found a use for it. The 24-70 is more useful to me. So yes, a longer lens would be more useful...

I hardly use my my Nikkor 20-200 f2.8; maybe 5 shots total in > 1 year. 200 mm is nothing :( The 17-24 f2.8 is a lot more useful. Used only the 30mm f2.0 on the recent trip.

Cloning a HD to a smaller SSD (v. partition alignment)

I had (have) many versions of DI, and I know the last few were bad, just don't remember all the details. I've been using Terbyte Unlimited's Image for Dos and have been very happy with it. Never tried to clone a HDD with it, though (not even sure if it can).

    Electrickery

It's not isolated, period. Cheapos take the easy way out and connect the neutral (not-hot) wire to the metal body. This becomes a problem if the device is moved to a country where the hot and neutral contacts are swapped at the socket. The cheapos know what they did, so will not correct the...

Cloning a HD to a smaller SSD (v. partition alignment)

That's because Symantec buggered it. It was pretty good while PowerQuest was releasing it. I bought the first version released by Symantec; one release was enough for them to work their magic on it.

Will Dynamic Disks survive a Vista to Win 7 upgrade?

I vaguely remember reading that if Win 7 sees more than one HDD during install, it will write some critical data to HDDs other than the boot drive, creating boot problems if those other drives are removed. Suggestion was to disconnect all other drives, install Win 7 and then reconnect the other...

Cloning a HD to a smaller SSD (v. partition alignment)

Damn, that sucks. In the old days, DriveImage was pretty flexible and allowed you to do all kinds of things without screwing it up. Too bad stupid Symantec bought it and PartitionMagic from PowerQuest and killed both products. I wish the guys that founded Powerquest come back now since there...

Moving XP x64 to new RAID array on different SATA controller

Some of the free partition manglers don't align partitions. I used a free one recently and had helluva problem unborking the whole thing. Partition Magic always worked correctly, but the last version released (8.3 or something like that) barfs on 1 TB drives.

Anyone have a suggestion on a new washing machine?

Because they are different brands, it is possible they are sold at different price points and use parts of differing quality. It is also possible that the machines are identical, and the marketing Dept. is playing games with pricing and consumer perceptions.
