    question Mobile Phones

Doesn't the AMOLED screen just wreck batteries? Battery life is definitely a weak point on high performance Android devices. That's something to consider as well.

I bought one. Even if I toss the motherboard, the chassis and PSU are worth it to me.

    4TB drive from Seagate

    Media Player Appliances

I'm now the owner of a Boxee box, a Seagate Freeagent Theater, a Popcorn Hour C200, and a Roku something-or-other. I built myself a Vortexbox, I have WHS machine and I've got an Xbox360 and a Wii as well. Out of the stuff mentioned in this thread, the only major thing I didn't buy was a Dune...

Sounds like a good way to burn in a CPU as well.

    Disk Controllers with 3TB support

Win7/Server 2008 need AHCI mode turned on to enable some of the built-in SSD optimizations.

    Disk Controllers with 3TB support

I really don't care. It's about all about density anyway. Unfortunately, I can't really bring myself to turn of AHCI mode on my i7s. That would suck for their SSDs.

    Disk Controllers with 3TB support

Looking at 1155, 1366 and AM3 stuff, it looks like motherboards top out at 12 SATA ports, not all of which can be assumed compatible with the drives. A new motherboard is cheaper than an 8-port RAID card.

    4TB drive from Seagate

Spinrite, but I don't know if it will operate with huge drives. You could also script something simple with dd on a *nix machine. dd if=/dev/yes of=/mnt/hdd Would fill a drive up with repeating ones eventually.

    Viore HD 1080p 60HZ lc40vf80 for 389 at costco?

Amazon offers free return shipping on TVs for the first 30 days. That's more than enough time for defects to become apparent.

    Disk Controllers with 3TB support

I'm not sure. It seems like the market is crying out for some inexpensive options with 8 ports and > 2TB support but they just aren't there. Not all SAS cards support expanders and not all SAS cards play nice with > 2TB drives, and what's left starts at about $450. That's just painful.

    4TB drive from Seagate

I hate Seagate almost as much as WD at this point and that's saying something. As much as I would love to pull 32 drives out of service and replace them with a mere eight, it's not going to happen if Seagate is my only option.

    Viore HD 1080p 60HZ lc40vf80 for 389 at costco?

I bought a 40" 1080P Toshiba LCD from Amazon for $399 today. That Viore doesn't sound like such a good deal now, does it?

    Anyone using Blue Ray?

Honestly, I think the best thing to do for basic backup is just to stick another internal drive into a desktop and to anoint that drive as "the drive that holds backups." I say internal because the simple fact is that external drive power supplies are so crappy and accidents are so frequent in...

    Disk Controllers with 3TB support

That could very well be why they show up as 750GB on the machines I have. Nonetheless, I'm not that far from needing a bunch of compatible ports, so it's good to get this out there.

    Disk Controllers with 3TB support

I've managed to obtain a half dozen Hitachi 3TB drives. I have exactly two machines where I can fully use a 3TB drive, and even at that it appears that I only have a total of four usable ports. So I need a nice disk controller with large drive support, and perhaps someone else will find this...

    Outlook + Gmail

Relating to your difficulties time, as I believe I mentioned before, the Outlook mail uploader from Google barfed on complex folder structures (i.e. more than one level of nested folder) when I used it. I wound up verifying everything and moving what wasn't there by hand using simple IMAP copies.

    question Backing up compressed files

To be honest, practically every modern file format is compressed to some greater or lesser degree. Even things like Word documents and CAD drawings are inflated and deflated as they're opened.

    HP Probook

I used to know a guy from a service company who would spit absolutely any time anyone said Toshiba. We all have our personal likes and dislikes. I'm sure the Thinkpads are solid. Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

An interesting observation: Since I have this little Acer box here I've been playing with it. RDP Virus

In the history of ever and for all my clients, I still only have six Server 2008 machines in production. At least one machine I'll have to update this year will probably still be Server 2003, though I'm going to try to get away with virtualizing it one way or the other.

    RDP Virus

It would be relatively trivial to add a port scan to such an attack to find the RDP port. It's really not worth the hassle to move it. You're better off not exposing RDP externally in the first place, but that can be an issue if you have some obnoxious client that can't handle the VPN protocols...

    Hurricane Irene

Part of me is tempted to suggest that suggest that there's quite a bit of the usual bias toward making things that happen to the East Coast huge news. But hurricanes do suck and there are enough people in that general area that I'm sure it will create misery on some level no matter what.

Timing of building a new system

I stuck it on the only non-workstation board I had handy, which wound up being an Asus H61 something-or-other. It powered on but did not boot. Evil Empire

It think if one thing has been proven definitively this week, it's that the consuming public is really demanding a high quality $100 tablet. HP presumably took a bath on every Touchpad it sold, but does anyone think that an Apple product is ever going to compete on the basis of price?

    Google Music beta

I don't care for the interface. It's very clunky, especially by relying on cover art or song title as principle forms of identification.
