The idea of a camera was tossed around, but it was decided that would be actionable on their part because most of the individuals we'd be looking at would be parents with their school-age children. Which is a huge, huge no-no in the USA. The current basis for the landlord's litigation is that...

You can get away with it, usually at least once, without them complaining too much. You'll probably have to do a manual reactivation and you say something like "Well, I got my computer fixed and now it's doing this..."

Windows Server 2008 needed or not?

The dead simple setup I'd use would be LogMeIn Hamachi for VPN access to the server and all the clients. That way the end user could easily and securely have both RDP and SMB access to whatever he needed. I would probably try to avoid messing with a VPN router for the very simple reason that...

I really think you need to adjust your expectations downward, blakerwry. All home routers do is suck and die and getting one that does that more slowly is really just luck of the draw.

The people who are doing that bought Intel or Asus workstation boards for theirs. If I have an opportunity, I'll see if I can borrow a CPU and make it boot on a standard z68 board.

Windows Server 2008 needed or not?

I'd consider Windows Server in that scenario. I'd also consider WHS (which does offer RDP and RDP Gateway stuff), something like a Synology NAS. I could probably roll my own setup using FreeNAS or something, were I so inclined. But I'd probably start by quoting those three things and explaining...

    MP3 player rant

My Clip+'s battery is basically dead after about 15 months. I used it perhaps 90 minutes a day and charged it irregularly. I was using it to carry about 40GB of music. For now I've moved to just keeping around 30GB of stuff on my phone and playing music from that, but sometimes I miss the small...

    Error 1935

I've not seen this precise issue, but I had something very similar happen on several systems where the .NET updater would fail repeatedly due to some nebulous combination of issues with the Windows installer database and the order in which some programs had been installed prior to imaging the...

The dead-simple way to set up file sharing over a VPN is using LogMeIn Hamachi. You manage everything from the LogMeIn web site and it keeps users from having to muck around with external firewall configs and the like. Stuff just works.

The building where I work was purchased by a charter school that didn't do enough due diligence to know that there is a tenant leasing space in the building. I know that Crossloop.com's underlying viewer switched from RealVNC to UltraVNC because UltraVNC doesn't automatically disconnect remote viewers during UAC prompts. I'm not sure what's different about RealVNC that it doesn't behave the same way.
