Well, for the IT-inclined, a private Windows Software Update Server isn't all that hard to set up. For those who aren't so inclined, making an updated windows install disc with all the updates slipstreamed in is pretty simple as well.

Did the US congress move to Australia??

This is at least the third time in the last 10 years that Oz has made some kind of effort at Internet Censorship; I don't think it's a new idea for the down under folk. I am glad that it was ineffective, though.

OK, nothing is going to make me hate IE less. But I found this Add-On for IE7 which provides two much-needed and missing features. Specifically, installing this provides AdBlock-like functions and inline spell checking, such as those provided with many browsers that are actually good.

    Acer to buy Gateway

Several people in my office bought $330 Acer Slugmachines when they were on sale at Circuit City a couple weeks ago. They are everything you'd expect in a $330 laptop. Celeron CPU, 512MB RAM, 4200rpm hard disk, Vista and hardware that will not function in XP (specifically the sound). I don't...

Why is it that every time I explain my various depression and anxiety issues to someone, the first thing they say is "You need to get stoned" or "You need to get drunk"; is that the only way people deal with life?

    More Vista nonsense

Microsoft responds to multimedia/networking complaints in Vista. You all ready for this? It's expected behavior that only impacts LAN operations and not internet connections. Uh-huh. Because that makes it better. The dual Pentium/133 I had in 1996 could play MP3s and handle a 100Mbit network...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

    64bit Windows OS - Choices?

Server 2003 Web edition is like $300. Microsoft likes to give out free copies of Windows Server when you go to tech conferences and stuff, though. I don't think x64 is worthwhile yet, at all.

    Simple business PC

That's unbelievably overspecified for a business machine. For an engineer, it'd be a good setup. You can safely drop to whatever the cheapest C2D is. I'd use an Intel motherboard with integrated video, and an 80 or 160GB hard disk. 2GB RAM would be gone, too, if the price per gigabyte exceeded $50.

    Upgrade advice: mobo, cpu

I'd absolutely look at the Quad core before an expensive dual core setup. The subjective difference between a fast dual core and a "slow" one isn't all that great, whereas the advantage of quad is fairly obvious. IMO the only dual core Intels worth looking at are the slowest ones in any category.
