Splash: Any tricks for SCA/SCSI Supermicro 5 drive box?

This box is seriously making me rethink boxes, and computers. It appears you could raid, and boot from the SCA boxes. If this is the case, you could have two, 5 drive boxes, booting on two channels, on Scsi 320 channels. I suspect the Adaptec 21010S wouldn't be able to handle this. Am I...

Getting Hard Drives out of Computers...

Well, I like being able to hear my hard drives. In fact, I've learned to tell when some sort of unauthorized activity is going on, by the noise they make. It's not much, but the little writing and seeking that occurs usually gets me running TrendMicro, and more times then not, it's some damn...

Hard Drive Drawer / Caddy - what's good?

I'd call Ken at Granite Digital, and explain your concerns. He's always been more then helpful, and his products have been industry standard, for as long as I can remember. I noticed the resemblance between an old el cheapo setup I saw in Fremont, and the GD product. I don't think IDE can...

A cheaper, more cool way to go would be water cooled computer stations, and go for some of the silent computer technology. Swifttech comes to mind. Isn't what you are after made by Sun? A central box, with terminals? s

Getting Hard Drives out of Computers...

Frankly, I don't see much of a point, period. This Dell P2 400 mhz has no detectable noise. The refrig is louder. It has a Quantum LM in it, and you can't detect it, 90% of the time, unless defraging or something that is disk intensive. With adequate RAM, and an OS that doesn't page all the...

Getting Hard Drives out of Computers...

I don't see much of a problem, David, except money. Cables are avaliable, http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg09_xtcables.htm and depending on length, depends cost. Still, it's doable. Just buy a remote RAID box, and go. Of course, to be super fast, you need PCI-X and an LSI...

Hard Drive Drawer / Caddy - what's good?

Backplanes are really scsi, and that really means supermicro, for SCSI, or, check on their SATA setups. The ide solutions I've looked at required 4 ide connectors, or, both mobo connectors, with slave and master set. Not really an SCA solution, at all. Knock on Sata is you have to have a SATA...

Buy another one. If you got 2 years use, for 20 bucks, you are complaining? I saw that same model, about 2-3 years ago in a Fremont PC store, and passed on it. Still, if it works, and it's that cheap... or, go SATA. s

IDE and bad software are killing me...

Let's see. After the debacle of trying to use the drives in raids, the different, working drives, ended up in other computers, that didn't have drives, or in boxes. One sat in a Dell, not used, for a couple years. Others were sold in computers, I put together for sale, or for backup... s

Yes. My drives died, fairly quickly. I gave up on ide, until I saw the 5 year warranty on the Maxtor DM 9, and, I bought it from Costco. Really needed a boot drive for the mac, with huge storage, and, I figured if they are all that fast, I could connect it to my mac. I did, and it sucked...

Check dot pitch sizes, too. Seems to me when I bought my Panasonic, it's either 27 or 29, that going to 32 inches was much less clear, due to a lot bigger dot pitch. Sort of like having a 19 inch monitor next to a 21 inch... Something about combs, and digital in and out, and all that stuff...
