Guantanamo Bay closes within a year... Good, but I guess we'll all have to help each other sorting out the mess GWB created. Or maybe Obama could give the prisoners some free land in Texas, next to GW's estate? That would be funny...

Well, if something, Apple has shown us that people want to download stuff from the internet. So I believe that Merc is absolutely right.

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

Well, I think most people that aren't totally deaf can hear the difference between a $20000 CD player and a $100 one.

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

I mean, I've listened to a Linn Sondek CD12 that used to cost $20000 around 2004 and it sounded pretty good. It actually made Linn's own $10000 Unidisk 1.1 sound like utter crap in comparison. And there's a few more steps down to the sound quality of the $200-$2000 CD players that most of us...

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

CD quality is OK, but it's almost impossible to extract the full potential of the CD. You'll probably need a $5000+ CD player to even come close. The best solution today is probably to rip the CD's and get one of these. Even a Squeezebox would probably give a big improvement for most of us...

    Alfa 8C Competizione- wicked

No, I didn't see it, I think we're out of synch with BBC here. The clip is a bit of a rape on Alfas, but I love the 75. I think I'd rather drive one of those than the 8C. I think part of the attraction with Alfa Romeo comes from the fact that if you make an Italian auto engineer choose between...

    Alfa 8C Competizione- wicked

If the Corvette is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of cars, Alfa Romeos are like Sabrina Ferilli, it's not fair to compare them. And do I have to say that I'd choose an Alfa any day? ;)

    dSLR thread

I think you'll end up in Russia (canon.ru) if you click at "Canon North-East Oy" on the global Canon web page, Finland is also listed as "Caonon Oy" instead of "Canon Finland". Canon should have an international warranty, but ask them if you're not sure.

    Automotive Fuses from Harbor Freight

Perhaps they aren't that concerned with tolerances, or maybe they use slightly different materials with wrong characteristics? Some stores sells hammers that bends after 10 minutes of use, sandpaper where the sands comes loose after five strokes and so on... So I'm not that surprised if there...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

It doesn't really matter if you improve five or 1000 roads in a large city, the traffic will increase until the main roads are congested again. It's exactly the same with buses and trains. If you build it, people will eventually travel with it even if there was no initial demand.
  26. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Well, it might not happen the same week as the road opens, but it'll change quite fast. There are plenty of studies made about the subject, as jtr1962 mentioned.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Oh I'm sorry, I just took for granted that USA had a growing population and that some people are drawn to large cities... Maybe that's not the case.
  28. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

The traffic and need for transportation will increase regardless... If you make it easier to take the car -> more people will take their car until the new and improved roads are congested. But if you have an attractive and efficient public transport system as an alternative, people will...
  29. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Easy, it's been tried and it always generates more traffic. It would be better to build more efficient public transport systems.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

You didn't actually say it, but it sounds like it would be a big sacrifice to consume less oil. :) But it won't affect the quality of life in a negative way at all if we make a slow transition. It will probably be more negative if we wait until we run out of easily accessible oil.
  31. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

You make it sound like a big sacrifice to reduce oil consumption, but it's not like we need to go back to living in caves and poking ants out of the ground with sticks you know.
  32. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Maybe you are confusing nannying with evolution? ;) There are already powerful and quite efficient cars that are fun to drive, like the BMW 535d and Saab 9-5 2.3 BioPower, but they aren't sold in the US (yet).
  33. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Interesting points... But we really don't need 8 cylinder cars even when driving at the autobahn at 250km/h... So I really don't understand why American moms should need one when they're driving to the mall alone? It seems like the author of the article think it's bad to make cars more...

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Sorry, but I have to quote this again. It's easy, get the customers interested in the cars. In Sweden we have had different kind of economic rewards if you buy an "environmentally friendly" car. You can get tax-rebates if you have a company car, if you are a private person you get 10000SEK...
  41. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

I think most manufacturers spend their time to make engines more efficient, bu to get more power out of them. It's sexier to say that new model has 20 hp more than the previous generation, than it is to say that it uses 0.4 litres less fuel per 100km or whatever.
  42. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Carrots are good for consumers, it works great. But the car makers won't be spending millions of dollars on developing these efficient cars unless there are laws that tells them to. It's the same everywhere.

Ok... 2006 Saab 9-5 2.0t BioPower, 150hp with gas, 185hp with ethanol. And did I mention that I drive it 24/7 and use maximum acceleration all the time, just because it's so cheap with ethanol? Just like that wise man Csaba Csere predicted. ;)
  46. F

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

Not if they make good fuel efficient cars... ;) It almost seems like you don't trust the ability of the American car makes.
