Free Dynamic DNS? Preferably for my own domain name?

There's such a thing as a PTR record on a DNS server. PTR records redirect only textual domain name to another, which can then be looked up on the appropriately authoritative DNS server for that domain. That's what ddrueding is doing. The only down side to doing that is when a user actually...

    Internet Kiosks?

I'd suggest starting with a thin client and some kind of remote access solution. It won't cost any less to set up, but administration will be easier. Since I'm assuming that Linux is off the table for you, you're left with Windows Server. Start with Terminal Server. Set the RDP client to use...

    Yay! I installed Fedora...now what?

I just installed Fedora 6 RC1 on a 1.2GHz P3. I was able to get DoveCot IMAP, Samba (server), fetchmail for 4 users, and Wordpress (an app that requires Apache, MySQL and PHP to be configured) in about 30 minutes. OpenSuSE is wonderful as a client/workstation, but it's a lot easier to set up a...

There's really just nVidia right now, and you know I don't like saying that. But Via's not to be found in AM2-land and the companies I trust for boards don't trust ATI enough to offer their chipsets. Anyway, I feel Will's pain. I have a $600 X2/4600 and a $500 X2/4400.

    Something Random

Nerve.com (site is Not Safe For Work, but it's an arty, intellectual sort of NSWF) has a piece of short speculative fiction by Douglas Rushkoff (well known for writing Cyberia among other things). The story is a quick read, told as a series of e-mail messages, about the trevails of sexuality...

The joy and serendipity of being a general-purpose computer trainer guy: I wrote a little proposal for one of the organizations for whom I teach, for a class in "Personal Electronics" which is going to fund buying a whole bunch of different crap (MP3 players, PDAs and cell phones) and getting to...

I'd suggest grabbing a set of Winternals applications before Microsoft buries all of them. Process Explorer by itself is worth its weight in gold, but there's so much crap on Microsoft's web site that even if the tools stay free you'll never be able to find them again.

I think in the long term Nirvana will be judged superior, mostly because what's-his-name blew his face off while people still thought he had talent and because their music was SO genre-defining that even I know what it sounds like. Pearl Jam has decades ahead to ruin whatever good name they...

I don't know about Olympus, but S*ny essentially makes all its hardware out of the same parts. I found a $40 512MB MP3 player/voice recorder that's designed to clip onto a collar or lapel. I've never heard of the brand but for $40, who the hell cares? Something else about flash MP3 players: They can be a lot smaller than single-function voice recorders. I don't mind that a bit.

AM2 is the platform of choice for current AMD hardware. Socket 939 is classed as legacy hardware. Pretending you're from Euroland lets you use the higher frequencies. And if you have a hackable AP (mine isn't, the WRT55AG doesn't run Linux like the WRT54G does), there's usually firmware to boost your signal output by as much as 20 - 30%.

I'm positive of it. Even still, Apple couldn't seriously consider AMD chips; AMD has enough problems manufacturing to meet demand as it is, and chip-shortages were a big reason Apple dropped Power in the first place. A Merome-based Thinkpad... Mmmm. That WOULD be nice.
