Another resounding stomping this week. As you are all aware, Xtreme Systems blew past us a couple nights ago. They aren't highlighted since they're are already past us. Even worse news is that yet another 2 teams (The University of Alabama & Hong Kong Team) that are behind us are outcrunching us and are poised to pass us eventually. :-?

CCXLVI. Ozymandias of Egypt

I MET a traveller from an antique land
Who said:—Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

We gave it a good run. As new teams come on board having purchased processors at the new sweet-spot (2000+) they will pass us too. Team University of Alabama has only 2 users.

We just need to gain more readership. :) That team U of alabama must be a computer lab or something... How they heck are two users cranking out that much without some type of army behind them.

It is a computer lab. 193 active processors in the last week.

Steve

This ID has completed just as many points with no team affiliation as it has under its own team.

FYI, With one or two more machines added to the fold we may just catch team AnandTech.

Some how Mustafa, your avatar is larger then the maximum allow at StorageForum. We might have to doc you a goat for this. You can't store them here, but if you send it to monkey-C, he won't mind.

If you don't want to send a goat, just begin folding@home for 12 months!

All your goat are belong to us!

:bravo:

This P4 laptop produces at such a piss poor rate that I have decided to turn it off when I'm not using it. So no results from me till I get the duallie up and running.

(Looking at Statsman's SF spec page...)

I think Doug has added one or two duallies to his F@H farm. 62 points in a single day, out of nowhere, there has to be a rational explanation.

Who? Where? Me? :p

I needed to do some stress testing on a couple of machines at work for a few days. (caugh, 6x dual PIII 1GHz 1GB ram clusters)

It won't last long.

Forgive me if this has been talked about in the previous 7 pages...

how good is a P4M 2 GHz (512K)? I just dedicated my laptop to F@H...it doesn't run 24/7, but it usually just sits here at work for hours per day. Hopefully it'll help my dual 1.2GHz Palomino setup. Which, by the way, I need to figure out how to run two clients at once on....any help would be appreciated for this junior folder.

Install the console client in two different directories. Use FireDaemon to run them as individual services. Don't forget to use the -service and -local switches.

Adcadet, here's a tip you may not kow about regarding purchases from Dell. They have this "price protection" scheme, which you can request within 30 days of invoice date, and they will compare the current price for your system to the price you paid (ignoring special offers/rebates etc). If the difference is $50 or more, they will credit you the difference. Easiest way to apply is on this DellTalk forum:

http://delltalk.us.dell.com/messages/overview.asp?page=1&name=credit_return

Label the post "Price Protection Request" and give your customer number, order number and invoice date. Best to leave it till close to 30 days, it is a one time thing once they run it, they can't do it again for that order.

Adcadet,

Why have you started a second F@H user?
__________________________________________________________

We'll need to do something to revamp our team because our production isn't good enough to improve our ranking much anymore. With the new Athlon XP that will be available in a few weeks, maybe some of us (I wish I could) will add some systems to their farm.

Thinking about it, apart from F@H, I have no real reason to upgrade my now one-year-old main computer. It is still better than many new boxes (Athlon XP 1500+ oced to 1700+, KT266A motherboard and 256MB of RAM with a GF3 Ti200). I could play any game on it. It is easier to figure why less people buy these days than two years ago. Upgrades don't worth it anymore for average users. Sad. I sold an Athlon XP 2000+ on an nForce 220-D board last week to an Office-oriented user and I'm sure she'll be fine with it for at least 3 years, probably even 5.

I'll probably also sell my Atlas 10K3, Cheetah X15-36LP (both 18GB models) and Adaptec 39160 too as I no longer need SCSI at home. I only need space to save the CD ISOs I download from the Net (mainly UNIX variants), but the speed of my current IDE drives is enough for my little needs.

For my part, I'll say that I haven't produced any results in many weeks. I've been doing some shuffling around, re-built a system, etc. I now have my main XP-1800+ up and running, along with a PII Celeron dual running Linux. I hope to add a PIII-866 in a couple of weeks. I am also running a 1 Ghz PIII at work, but it usually gets a connection once a day, and loses a couple of days on the weekend.

If anyone can find a fix to let me run F@H on Mandrake 8.2, I can add a PIII-800 to the mix. I like the way I have that machine set up, and it also runs my web server, so I am reluctant to modify it at this time. Any ideas?

I wasn't awared that the F@H client was incompatible with Mandrake 8.2. I hope it isn't with v.9.0 since I'm about to install it. Have you considered upgrading your Mandrake version to 9.0?

I can run F@H okay, but it just sits idle. Clocker was having the same problem. He finally switched to RedHat.

I'm planning on upgrading, and I hope that it will resolve my Folding problem. I really like the Mandrake distribution of Linux, but I'd also like this machine to fold, so maybe I'll get both...we'll see.

I have it running on my Mandrake 9.0 installation, but it seems to be about 1/3 slower than on Windows on the same machine.

Strange that they haven't optimized F@h for such a ubiquitus distribution as Linux Mandrake. Somebody has to mail Stanford for this...

The problem isn't specific to Mandrake, it is common to all Linux platforms. The Linux client is slower than the one for Winblows. Sad (and hard to understand) but alas, true.

I wonder if FreeBSD can run the F@H client for Linux? Afterall, FreeBSD is supposed to support most softwares designed for Linux (or so did I read). It would be just as slow though (the problem lies with the client, not the Unix OS variant).

Many have eliminated almost all of the Linux performance problems by running the Win32 version of F@H under WINE in Linux.
