Many have eliminated almost all of the Linux performance problems by running the Win32 version of F@H under WINE in Linux.

Thanks, Clocker. I'll give that a try.

Ok, good to know it's probably on my Mandrake 9.0 installation (Yep, upgraded this morning, nice). But...where? I'll search on Google, hope to find something to tell me where to access to WINE on Mandrake 9.

Click on the Mandrake Control Center on the taskbar. Then click on Software Management, and Install Software. Type "wine" in the search box, and it should come up with 2 results: wine & winelib. Check the box next to each, and click install. Once they're installed, go to this page to find out how to configure Wine. I haven't done it yet, though I will try it later today.

Many thanks SteveC, it couldn't have been clearer. I already visited the page you linked and downloaded the 20020904 version of WINE (WINE20020804 came with MDK 9), but in .tar.gz format instead of the .rpm file. I tried to compile it first from the shell using the ./configure command, but it resulted in an error telling me that it didn't find any C compiler.

I'll retry, but this time following the method detailed on Winehq's web site instead. Hope it will work. In the meantime, I downloaded and started the 3.14 Linux client and configure it to run G@h units instead. I think the proteins it will crunch will had to my F@h score anyway. I wanted to try something different.

On a side note, I don't know if it's just me but Mandrake 9 feels a lot snappier than my previous RedHat 7.3 installation. I don't know why (both use similar application versions), but it is definetly more responsive than before. I'll keep it and I think I'm gonna use this (aging - K7 500MHz) box instead of my others Winblows boxes for a while. Linux has become very usable for a desktop machine, not just for servers anymore.

It works! Their instructions are very confusing, so let me try to simplify it. Once you install wine, you have to figure out what you want to be your "c" drive. I have a FAT32 partition that I chose, but it could be anything. You need to create a Windows, Windows\System, Windows\Start Menu and \Program Files directories.
Now you have to edit the wine config file, which is located in /home/user/.wine/config. Edit where it says [Drive C] and change the path to whatever it is you chose to be the "c" drive. For example my FAT32 partition is located at /mnt/windows, so I have:
"Path" = "/mnt/windows"
"Type" = "hd"
"Label" = "Windows"
"Filesystem" = win95"

Then go down to the [wine] section, and here you have to change to path to the appropriate settings. For example:
"Windows" = "c:\\Windows"
"System" = "c:\\Windows\\system"
etc.

Save the changes, and you should be able to run the console version of FAH. At a shell, type wine followed by the path to wherever you have FAH. Mine is:
wine /mnt/windows/Folding@Home/FAH3Console.exe

If that's unclear or you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'm not sure if that is all that's needed for other Windows programs, since I haven't tried any others yet.

The reason Mandrake 9.0 seems faster, is because it's compiled with GCC 3.2, which produces faster code than GCC 2.9x that older versions used.

Well, I surpassed my SETI goal and am switching to our FAH team here. There are a few more units to crunch but I'm no longer refilling my SETI cache.

I've downloaded the FAH console client & started it on my laptop (P4m1.6). Initially, it'll be in contention with the remaining SETI units but after a few days those will all be processed & it'll spend about 21 hours a day folding.

I'll do the same on the home PC tonight.

Question: I used SETIDriver for work unit caching to make sure I keep 3+ days of work always available since I only sporadically connect (via modem) from home. Is there a process to achieve similar results in FAH?

Fushigi, At this time the process is manual. You would have several folders and crunch through the folders either sequentially or in parallel. At any rate the process is still manual.

The reason for this is that the importance of turning in crunched proteins within a certain timeframe is important for the science as the next week's research may depend on the results. As far as stats go, you will get credit no matter how late you turn it in.

Duallie is back on-line for approx 12 hours per day (far too noisy to run when sleep is being attempted). F###ing Deathstar 45GB fell over, killing my win2k bootup. Now booting off one of the X15-36LPs, all IDE HDDs disconnected.

We are the 27th team with regards to weekly output. Of the top 27 teams, only two teams have fewer participants (total and active), Hotmail and UA. Of the top 27 teams we have the highest percentage active.

GO TEAM!

This thread has been quite slow lately, so I just wanted to bump it up a bit and say KEEP ON CRUNCHING!

On a side note, did that one furry creature break that 100point/day line? I though she was about to do that, like cliptin....*HINT* ;)

As for new peoples here at SF, join the team!

I'm still having a hard time believing that the RC5-64 project at distributed.net is finally over. Like so many others, I dedicated years to that project.

I guess I'll try Folding@Home for a while.

I would love to have that Japanese P3-450 computer. I guess now it will be piece of history... :D

I went with the distributed.net project because it was the only such project out there at the time, and I needed a way of stress-testing new systems.

The fact that it gave me the chance of winning $2000 was the reason I continued to run it.

Oh well.

I'm still doing the distributed.net thing, just doing OGR.
If I could seemlessly install this folding thing as a NT service and not ever worry about it again.... I would consider it. But it looks like you have to use this firedaemon thing to do that. Maybe I'll play with it later.

Aren't we supposed to recruit people for F@h here? Promote other @home projects in another thread.

Aaargh! If they fix the frigging F@H servers so they could take my results and give me new work I would be much more productive. 4 clients waiting for data...... the laptop goes so slow it can run a couple of days without connecting.

My laptop's P4M 1.6GHz folds, at a rough guess, roughly half as fast as my T-bird 1.4GHz.

And F@H still needs a queueing method .. my machines aren't crunching 24x7 as they run out of work. I don't have an always-on connection so they can't automatically retrieve more work.

My google toolbar showed up with a "new" button today. So I decided to click it to see what's up with that.

Turns out, the google toolbar now has the feature to run folding@home.

Automatically? I remember I had opted for the Advanced Features while installing, will it update by itself to the latest version?

Interesting Google experimental features:

Browser control
The onUnload JavaScript event is most often used to open pop-up windows as you leave a page, which can be an annoyance. The following feature will clear the onUnload event after loading each page.

Navigation
The Next and Previous result buttons allow you to quickly navigate among the results from the last Google search you performed. For example, you might perform a search and click the first result link and surf around for a while, then click the "Next" button to see the second result.
