No, you have to be connected to the internet to send results and recieve WU's. There are some really kludgey work arounds (manually moving folders from computer to computer) but no one in their right mind would use them.

Quick update, running -advmethods on the next:
P4 3000 2xfolding linux
P4 3200 2xfolding linux
Barton 3000 1xfolding winxp

Hopefully I'll start seeing some more points soon. Great work Mark!

Don't forget that -advmethods is not enough. You need to run the console with the -configonly option and say yes to the Large WU's question.

Damn, I still missed the -configonly option. Right now I'm launching:
"C:\Program Files\FAH\FAH502-Console.exe -svcstart -local -forceasm -advmethods"

I reread what you posted earlier, and you mentioned only using the -configonly on first use. Do I need to put it in, start up the service, and then take it out?

Last week I installed W2K3 Server on a pair of 2GHz Xeon cards in my new i5. They are single-CPU cards but a Folding instance only shows using 50% CPU. I'm assuming they're HT-capable so I added a second instance to each. Total of 4 clients running, all are set with large WU support & -advmethods on the service.

The i5 itself is running SETI since there's no F@H client for PPC AIX or i5/OS.

When multiple services are set to auto-start, one always fails. A manual re-start works fine, so I'm pretty sure it's a timing thing; they can't both initialize at the same time. Anyone else run into this and is there a cure that doesn't require logging in to the machine?

With multiple services, each instance needs to be in seperate directories/folders and you need to use the -local -service switches.

Without these you will have problems.

Also, make sure each session has it's own machine number in the config file. IE: machine 1, machine 2, etc.

They are, of course, in separate directories. I've never used the -local & -service switches. I just have -svcstart -advmethods.

I've also never changed the machine ID. All the systems I use that have duallies have both instances as machine 1. Since it's installed in a different dir, what difference does it make?

It made a difference on my P4 running Server 2003. I manually start each session after the computer boots up. The second session always failed to start the first time I tried to run it. After making it machine 2, it starts first time every time. Don't have an explanation for it.

The -local specifies that each instance stores its config in the directory/folder rather than storing it in the registry: Necessary because otherwise the machine number is shared and that causes problems. The machine number has to be different so that each instance stays seperate.

The -service option prevents the service from trying to communicate with the non-existanct console. I've run several machines without the -service parameter and as far as I can tell its lack causes no ill effect. However, it is recomended by FAH.

OK, I'm now doing -svcstart -local -advmethods -service and have the two invocations running under different machine IDs. After a reboot, both services are starting just fine. Thanks for the assistance.

BTW, my point production seems to be reflecting the large WUs now.

I got my A64 winchester 1.8 upto 2.4GHz and it seems reasonably stable. Certainly seems a little faster than my 400SC with 2.4

Bozo, the extremeoverclocking link is actually at the top right corner of the storageforum website. :) (I know it is in need of improvment. I promise, they are coming soon)

Yep, an A64 should smoke an equally clocked P4 (or anything, really except for a Pentium-M)

Actually with our main application at work, my A64@2400 thrashes the panties of any P4s we have. I estimate we would need a P4 3.6 or 3.8 to beat it. It's just a royal pain to find a reasonable major dealer who a) sells Athlon64s and b) has a decent 3 year warranty for a reasonable price. I would go with laptops but we need a serial port.

Those large WU's really matter for point production: It can almost double your production. It gives our team a competative advantage because most folders haven't turned on that option: It requires that they know about the bonus and reconfigure their clients. Which for many is too much of a hassle too: the joy of set and forget.

I encourage that everyone examine their folding logs to make sure that hidden problems aren't occuring because of the recent fiddling with Large WU's and the service clients. It is easy to make a mistake the results in multiple clients operating using the same machine number causing corruption. This is especially true with HT P4's operating multiple clients.

On the horizon there are still major changes that can and will affect us. First is that they are going to re-evaluate the point system because of complaints and when that happens who knows the effect. The second is that they are planning to release a client for graphics cards. Supposedly, using the GPU for folding on a modern high-performance video card can produce 2x the folding rate of a high performance PC CPU. I suspect the reason it hasn't been released yet is the difficulty of making it seemless by not excessively slowing down the card and interfering with things like game play.

I've noticed a nice boost in points after switching to large work units. I'll have to examine he logs to make sure I have no errors.

I haven't heard of anyone else utilizing GPU power, so that will be a nice bonus for us and them. Even if they make it so the GPU is only used when a screen saver is activated, that would be nice. However, that might not e so easy to determine on non-windows based systems.

It would most deffinitely help Greg!
Download the no-nonsense CLI client from folding.stanford.edu to 2 different folders. Double click the file, input you name, teamnumber 10477, enable large files, change advanced options and make a different machine id for both of them.
You can make them a service while you're configuring them.

Start them with the options Mark has explained on this page, -advmethods and -local.

Yes, a dual Xeon 2.8 addition would be great.

First DL the client - The 5.02 console is the best choice.

Create directories - 1 for each CPU or 2 per CPU if you have Hyper-Threading enabled.

I use (but it can be anywhere as long as each CPU is seperate):

\\Folding@home\CPU1
\\Folding@Home\CPU2
\\Folding@Home\CPU3
\\Folding@Home\CPU4

Put copies of the client in each directory

Run each client in its respective folder and give it the -configonly parameter (I perfer to run them using the command line). For most questions the default values are fine. However, there are specific questions that the defaults can be improved upon.

Because this machine has multiple CPU's you will need to enter the advanced section.

First pick a username (Santilli should work fine).
You will also need to enter the team number (SF's is 10047)
Access the internet using Internet Explorer's settings
You will want to turn on Large Work Units.
You will want to prefer FAH
You will want to operate it as a service
You will want a different Machine number for each CPU

When done with the above configuration, you will need to edit the registry to add command-line options to the service.

The specific options needed are -local -advmethods -service -forceasm

1. Shut down that instance through the Services manager snap-in
2. Run regedit and go to key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\<service name> and edit the entry ImagePath, adding whatever flags you wish to the end. Exit regedit.
3. Re-open the Services manager snap-in, and verify that your changes appear there, and then restart the service.

If you would prefer visual configuration instruction you can use FAH configuration. Please use my choices above for the questions: Some of the answers shown in the above tutorial are out of date (Please use my answers, not theirs). However, it still gives a good example of what the process looks like.

If you like regular feedback on your production or the team's stats add Statman to your favorites.

Hopefully, I've made these instructions relatively painless with few errors. If you have further questions, feel free to ask.

Welcome to our team.

After the reg tweak, in the service's properties the "Path to executable" should say something like: C:\Program Files\FoldingAtHome\V5\FAH502-Console.exe -svcstart -advmethods -local -forceasm

The other setting I make is to change the update interval to 30 minutes from the default 15 (in the advanced settings). Since the machines I use are up 24x7 and are stable, why waste cycles doing the update twice as often as needed? I'm sure it's a negligible impact on the amount of folding I do, but every cycle helps.

I added the -forceasm command to the path. Then when I started the program, I got a warning that this over writes some safe guards in the program. The warning went on to say that it should not be used.

That's normal, don't worry about it.

It removing some checks for overclocking errors. If your FAH is already stable (Not getting corrupted WU's because of overclocking), then removing the checks for stability is not a problem.

Cougtek - What happened to you? Your computer stoped folding as of 1/13/05.

Jake the Dog - Whatever happened to you? You used to be one of our best folders but it's been quite a while since you've folded.

Santilli - Were not my instructions clear? You have not started folding.

What's happening to our team: Our production has dropped like a rock?

Fushigi: Active processors (within 50 days) 22 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 7
F_Bostrom: Active processors (within 50 days) 10 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 5
ddureding: Active processors (within 50 days) 9 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 4
The_JoJo: Active processors (within 50 days) 8 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 4
Mourn: Active processors (within 50 days) 7 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 5
ZX: Active processors (within 50 days) 3 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 2
Pradeep: Active processors (within 50 days) 3 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 2
Bozo: Active processors (within 50 days) 3 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 2
Clocker: Active processors (within 50 days) 2 -- Active processors (within 7 days) 0

Notice a pattern? There are a few that have not dropped processors and none that have gained firepower.

Our team rank will shortly be skyrocketing past the 100 mark if this isn't corrected quickly.
