Normal military aircraft don't have anywhere near that kind of range, so they chartered an Airbus A330. With 11 observers and two sets of crew, it took 4 hours just to reach the search area and 5 to return, leaving just 2 hours for low-altitude (2000ft) searching.

P3C Orion has an public-known range of 8,900km? Doesn't leave long for loiter time, but a P3C was desgined for maritime hunting and could've quite easily picked out her boat at some distance?

Just glad she was found, and still in good health.

A330-200 has a range of 13,400 km. However, that's quoted fully loaded, whereas AFAIK the P-3C is quoted unloaded ('ferry' configuration).

While searching at low altitude (600 m), fuel consumption goes through the roof. So the effective range and 'time on station' are going to be less in this case. You also have to allow for unexpected problems with the aircraft - after all, there's no alternative runway to head to ...

The A330 cruises at 870km/h, whereas the P-3C cruises at 610km/h. So instead of 9 hours, travel time would be closer to 13 hours.

As it happens, the Air Force did send two P-3Cs to an island that is slightly closer to the crippled boat than Australia is, as a fallback option if the situation worsened.

As for spotting the boat, don't forget that it's pretty small and there was a substantial swell.

In July 2007, the Australian Government was given 'first pass approval' to participate in the cooperative development of the P-8A Poseidon. The P-8A would replace the Royal Australian Navy's fleet of P-3C Orion aircraft.

Nope. Too busy working and too poor to buy tickets (500$+). Anyway, no one to go with so no point. I catched the ending on TV. I heard the race was an absolute success, which is good for my city. Good show, good crowd, good money. Good thing it's back.

I don't know, but it seems like the oil companies in general aren't that concerned about the environment. Just look at Nigeria, the situation there is much worse than in the Mexican Gulf, but they aren't doing very much about it.

.., but otherwise just dealing with Telstra due to ongoing mobile phone issues. Both current handsets have been sent away again, (telstra have given me 2x loan handsets and will waive all repair fees).

Both handsets have come back from repair... Their fix: reflash the firmware on both units and perform a Master Reset. (That's been the same thing they did the last 2 times). They also mentioned that bluetooth and WiFi were on as well, (which is complete BS). After a good discussion with the manager about that not being good enough as they obviously know that there a fault they can't fix, he has agreed to cancel all contracts and let us choose another phone if we wish to continue with Telstra.

(basically a week off work so far, as while on Summons to court for Jury Duty you're not allowed to go to work until you are discharged from court, or not called for selection by the time your nominated period runs out).

Yep, the manager at the local telstra didn't like me, but I ended up getting both handsets replaced.

Was offered the choice between a Nokia E71 and a Samsung Ultratouch... Went the Samsung due to known problems with that model of nokia. So far the phone is working quite well.

My only nitpick is that to use UMS or MTP modes when connecting to a PC, it requires a SD card installed.

What problems does the E71 have, Chewy? I've been using one since December 2008 and it's by far the best phone I've ever had. There's 3 issues I don't like:
1) The small screen
2) No HTML email, only text
3) When is syncs email, it'll kill a call if you're on one

I'll change it only because of reasons 1 & 2. Otherwise it's fantastic.

What problems does the E71 have, Chewy?

High failure rate for the ones supplied by Telstra here in Oz. According to local contacts some retailers are seeing up to 20% failure rate within 6 mths, with the most common problem being poor reception, dogdy keyboards or random hard-locks. (The manager we've been dealing with due to problems with our previous handset said out of the 20 E71's they have sold in the last 6mths, 5 have been returned for repair for various reasons).

The Telstra version (also called a E71-3) uses 850MHz instead of 900MHz/2100MHz for 3G access, which requires that the phones have a slight hardware modifcation and some customer OEM firmware loaded. (I believe the latter is most likely the cause of the problems).

By all means, when I did a search on the E71 for research to choose between the 2, I found nothing but praise for it. But speaking with repair technician directly and the manager of the local store I've been deaing with, both said that they have had a higher than normal failure rate on them, and since we were swapping handsets due to multiple repairs with our current handsets, I'm sure the manager wouldn't be wanting to give us another handset that had issues.

The only problem noted with the Samsung handsets we got, was poor battery life when using the GPS with the live map/street view feture since it enables the GPS as well as HSPDA at the same time. When you only have a small 880mAH battery to play with, I could see why that is a problem. But otherwise the Samsungs have been quite good.

Not with 600-700GB written over. Recovery is a boring waste of time. Now I'm moving data all around again. It is certainly not a time saver to do this in the middle of the night and screw it up. :bstd:
