I can put a backup in my server room. Obviously it couldn't be the primary, as it isn't my bandwidth, but a backup would be fine. We have redundant T1s from different carriers, redundant AC units, UPS, and a generator with a week's fuel. The bandwidth isn't much, but it would keep the place going in case of emergency.

Yeah, Handruin I have fairpoint, used to be verizon in Nashua NH and I know that they block 21, 80 and 443 at a minimum. I was able to throw up apache on 8080 but I haven't figured out how to move the home server to another port, not that I tried hard. I also know our IT dept had some problems getting my cisco 871 vpn working here.

Have to go business class to get things unblocked.

Looks like you got the new higher speeds they are rolling out in the area. I'm not terribly unhappy with my 3360/800 Kbps connection but could always enjoy more.

Edit, just noticed that was the test server in manchester. You on FIOS or something down in MA?

From what I can tell right now, port 22 and 80 are not blocked with FiOS here in MA. I have a VM running right now that is being used for the game Minecraft and me and a few buddies are using it. It runs on a higher port number, but I enabled SSH (port 22) so my friends can log in and restart the server if needed and they've been able to. I'm also able to get to the default web page I created as a test.

I selected a server outside of MA to get an idea of the performance with some distance. The Boston test is here:

Is the ONT mounted inside? Should be able to plug it into a UPS (along with the networking gear etc).

Sorry, inside/outside won't matter. If you plug the power adaptor that goes to the battery pack into a UPS that should boost your runtimes. It won't know the power is out till your UPS drains.

The ONT is inside and it is plugged into a standard outlet with no UPS on it. I could easily plug the ONT into a UPS, but they told me not to even plug it into a power strip/surge protector. I was planning on getting a smaller like this APC just to run my network switch and router, but if you think it's possible to power the ONT as well, I might just get a larger UPS and be done with it.

Unrelated, but I did have the installer run my the CAT 5 connection from the ONT where as they normally use the Coax connection for both TV and internet to their router. I followed steps I found online and I'm now using my own router and I have theirs plugged into mine so that the TV's still function. I've been able to bypass their Actiontec router for internet usage which makes me happy. Now I don't have to go reprogramming everything and I can keep all my IPs and port forwards all the same.

How about co-locating the hosting with another member? With something like DynDNS it wouldn't be very hard to automatically check to see if your host is unavailable and then update DynDNS with a new IP address. The data could be mirrored at interval and the switchback could be handled manually.

I don't really know how that would work, but I'm open to the idea. Would that mean my domain names are now managed by DynDNS and using one of their paid services such as the Custom DNS?

I could run the mirror with David and maybe work out the details with running a MySQL mirror and do occasional syncs with the uploaded files which are few and far between. I don't want to get him in trouble for using bandwidth, but it's a viable idea.

Today's random post:

Since I took bought it new on 2/28/2002 through it's last fill up on 10/9/2010 my Nissan Maxima:
  • Has consumed 5508.66 gallons of premium unleaded gasoline
  • Driven 132114.6 miles
  • Average fuel economy of 23.98MPG
  • Best mileage for a tank of gas was 29.3MPG (in July 2002)
  • Worst mileage for a tank of gas was 15.76MPG (in January 2004)
  • The cost for all the gas is >$12.75k. (I don't have the exact dollar amount spend on gas since I didn't keep track of the cost for the first 15 tanks)
  • The lowest price paid per gallon of premium unleaded was $1.359 on 12/2/2002
  • The highest price paid per gallon of premium unleaded was $4.509 on 7/4/2008

How much did it cost to keep track of all that?
There was no financial cost. I started a spreadsheet back on 3/8/2002 to keep track. What I do is write the mileage on the receipt after I get gas and then stick the receipt in the center console. When I get motivated every few years I take all the receipts from the console and get the spreadsheet back up to date. Today was one of those days. :sunny:

Two more stats I left out earlier:
  • I have put gas in the tank 472 times since buying the car.
  • My wife has never driven the car

:eek3: I don't even get the receipts for my own car.

That reminds me of when we moved house in 1963. The previous owner had manually measured the temperature in the swimming pool every day for 2-3 years and recorded it in a logbook. Then he handed over the logbook and thermometer to my father as if he would continue the practice.

I know it's comparing apples to oranges but I've cycled 8862.4 miles over the same time period. And BTW, that total is pathethic for me but I've gotten back into cycling lately. Total for 2010 not including today ( because I didn't ride yet ;) ) is 2359.3 miles. Might break 3000 miles this year if the weather holds. Grand total since I've started keeping records in September 1980 is 62092.9 miles.

At least now I know I'm not the only one anal about keeping records. I would probably do the same thing as you if I drove. Knowing me, I would probably also keep records of my daily miles, plus daily average and maximum speeds ( I already do this with my cycling records because it helps me track my fitness ).

I got my eldest a mountain bike, 24" tires, 21 speeds is a little too much for him to get his head around so I've got it in 2nd on the 3 cog and then he has 1-7 on the back cog. The instruction manual actually has a list of gears that aren't recommended (the one's furthest apart). Too hard to keep track of. Might investigate studded tires for winter time for him, that way he won't slide out on the black ice.

Why would he be riding a bike in the winter? I've done it a few times for fun in deep snow (not to get somewhere), but it's not something I'd want to do regularly.

Well it's quicker than walking to school. 3 minute ride versus 10 minute walk. The sidewalks are plowed with a little v-plow, so it's usually OK. If it's raining one of us will drive him.

That's pretty much what I do. I have 10 cogs in back ( 11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-26 ) and three ( 30-42-52 ) in front. I find using the middle one in front is fine 99% of the time. The only exceptions would be a long uphill steeper than about a 5% gradient ( rarely encountered where I ride ), or on the other end downhill speeds greater than about 40 mph ( again pretty rare given the lack of long downhills and general traffic conditions ). In fact, some rear clusters now have such wide gearing ranges ( i.e. I bought an 11-32 for my other bike ), that I'm starting to think for city riding having more than one cog in front is superfluous.

For those who don't want to deal with cogs and derailleurs there's always the Rohloff speedhub if you can afford it. 14 evenly spaced gear ratios with an overall range of 5.26:1.

Wow, that must be good if your body can handle it. I've not been allowed to do that for some years, though I never wanted to anyway.

It's been hard to get back to this point given the number of years of not riding much. Thankfully so far my body has cooperated with me, more or less. I had leg cramps a lot earlier this year. Diet may have partially been at fault for that though. Now my main "problem" is my output seems to have plateaued given that my overall average speeds are stuck mostly in the low to mid 16s ( cruising speeds are about 18-23 mph on the level, but of course traffic, potholes, hills all result in a lower average ). I guess everyone plateaus at some point. I just wish my plateau was at a higher level. Then again, I'm not all that much slower than I was in my 20s ( maybe on a great day back then I might average mid 17s ). For that, I should be happy.

What are the reasons you can't exercise hard, assuming you wanted to? Heart issues or some other problem? I'm probably more worried about my knees giving out at this point. My mom and sister both needed arthoscopic surgery. I'm surprised my knees have lasted this long.

I have balance issues.

I suppose that is too vague, but maybe a mild type of this. "Balance issues" also makes me think of Bipolar Beth. :smurf:

So, I completely disassembled my "new" 4.5 year old work notebook today and broke out the soldering iron on it. The VGA output was intermittent depending on the angle of the cable. I touched up all the leads from the connector to the PCB with a soldering iron and now it's working fine again. :thumbleft:

I'm still trying to figure out what the previous owner did with it / to it. There's piles of small brown particles in it, like coffee grounds or black pepper. I previously blew the system out compressed air since the keyboard was just full of 'em. I found 'em all through out the chassis too and tried to clean it out the best I could. :cursin:

Mouse poop? :dunno:

Sounds like frass? (Insect poop). Could be roach or mites?

I've seen gecko poop in PCs as well. They like the warmth? But being a lappie, unlikely to be gecko.

PS. Google Image 'insect poop': http://www.google.com.au/images?q=insect poop - 10th picture... (hoping everyone else gets the same results - you'll know the image I'm referring to).

Having said that, I don't see how it could be that since it's a laptop there were no signs of dead insects in it or any sort of nest or hive. Further the quantity and locations of the particles were such that I just can't see it being insect crap. For a PC used daily and carried around in a bag the insect theory seems implausible (at least to me).
