So Merc, do you like the "The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show?" That should be your cup of tea.

Well I'm not sure exactly, but it is something about young women modeling underwear.

They still have clothes on, and all they do is walk. Why would Merc be interested?

I didn't say he would be interested. I'm just surprised he's never heard of it. It's been on TV every year since 2001 I think.

I haven't watched network television in at least that long.

To be completely honest, I'd rather watch naked ladies just being naked than hardcore porn with the hairy tattooed guys who look like they just got out of prison. But I have a nice collection of that stuff already.

Many people have thought I would like BBT but it still feels too predictable even if the jokes are nerdy. :)
I've never watched the show. My brother, who is considerably younger than me, was incredulous when I told him.

Maybe we're just too old for that kind of stuff.

That sounds like a good system. Around here the TV is spotty on some channels after they moved the HD frequencies around. :(
Digital broadcast is a lot less forgiving than analog was. Even when I had an almost straight shot to the tower from which most of the channels here broadcast, there were ones that I couldn't get all of the time.

AT&T includes a DVR with my plan, so it'd be silly for me not to use it.

They did stream Dexter in the past. I was able to stream seasons one and two but then had to get season 3 and 4 on bluray. I think it was just a falling out with Showtime with regards to licensing.[/url]
I think that they want you to subscribe to Showtime. That's really how they make money....

I'm sure that's what they want. HBO has also made that clear since most if not all their content is not available on Netflix streaming if I remember correctly.

Which may work in some cases, but I won't subscribe to them just to see one or two shows I like. It would be interesting to see how many other people are not willing to subscribe but would like certain content. If they could work out a deal to get revenue through streaming, it might be in their interest to gain more customer revenue from whatever amounts of people like myself who won't subscribe. I don't see it as being far too different from HBO and Showtime making their content available on DVD & BR. People don't need to subscribe to purchase that content.

HBO actually allows streaming of its original content through HBO Go, but only to people who already have HBO subscriptions. I suspect this was a deal made to keep its sweetheart status with cable and satellite providers; when I last had HBO I essentially had to pay for every other thing Comcast offered before they would give it to me.

I typically buy discs for the HBO shows I like. It's highly probable that I'll have obtained that content some other way long before the discs are available, but I do support the shows I like. I've had Game of Thrones pre-ordered on Amazon since the day that option was available to me.

That's pretty much what I do, get them via other means and get the dvd/bluray later. Problem is there are plenty of shows not really worth that second step. I wouldn't mind paying to stream them near their air date, if I could.

PanAm is fast becoming one of my favorite shows.

As good as Mad Men? I read some reviews that suggested it wasn't.

I don't think Mad Men is that good, actually. It's interesting as a period piece, but I'm not invested enough to care what happens to any of the characters. Ennui and interpersonal estrangement are definitely part of the atmosphere they're trying to capture, but the plot of the show seems to take a back seat to production design for me as a viewer.

I don't like Breaking Bad either. It's too ridiculous to work as a drama and not really amusing to work on any other level.

The problem is cannibalization. It's the same problem that newspapers have.

If they offer the content online, even for a fee, some people who would have otherwise subscribed, won't. Unless the content is priced so as to offset that possibility, it's a losing affair; and, if so priced, streaming online is tantamount to having paid for a subscription, so why not just subscribe.

I managed to get through an episode and a half of Parks and Recreation. Which, granted, is about an entire episode more than I made it through either version of The Office.

I quite enjoyed 30 Rock, which apparently hasn't started its new season yet.

Shameless has a very entertaining first season in both American and British incarnations, but having watched later seasons of the UK version, it really goes off a cliff after that.

Six Feet Under is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest TV dramas of the past decade if not all time. Personally, I thought the first season was wonderful. After that, the writers do everything they can possibly do to alienate the viewer from the characters. I stopped watching mid-way through season 3 when I realized that I no longer even slightly cared what happened to any of the principal characters.

Leverage, like Burn Notice and Heroes, was excellent when it started and would have made a great mini series. By dropping or adding onto the initial large plot arcs they have basically spoiled it.

Wait. Burn Notice was good at some point?

Basically I watch that because Bruce Campbell + regular doses of eye candy. There is no deeper level than that.

Good might be an overstatement. Entertaining? Something my wife and I could agree on? We stopped at the end of season 2, so it was better before that.

I find Sanctuary surprisingly unterrible, and although I can never quite remember how I manged to get through the whole first season of Fringe it managed to improve substantially after that and is now pretty reasonable (Turns out the writers are much better at long plot arcs, or they've all been replaced).

Grimm seems like it could be pretty good, although it's still in the ideas we had before we started filming honeymoon period so it could easily tail off in the next 5 or so episodes.
I found Tera Nova interesting in that it's honeymoon period lasted out the pilot, then episode 2 was filler, not a good sign.
Burn Notice isn't bad, but I'd have to agree that it's really about Bruce Campbell, eye candy, and remembering how hot Gabriel Anwar used to be. Generally I think Psych (By the same people) is better but they've both stuck to a formula which is wearing a little thin.
I think the only other thing I watch that no one has mentioned is Sons of Anarchy, it's a bit like Dexter in that it makes you care about the bad guys, but the characters seem a bit more real.

I enjoy NCIS, both versions.
Burn Notice is enjoyable, though the plot with the current bad guy is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Anybody like Castle? Haven't made it through the earlier years. How is the recent stuff?

Enjoy Hawaii 50 as well.

I'm not a big fan of police procedurals, but I like Nathan Fillion enough to sit through season 1 of Castle. It's unchallenging, by the numbers network TV fare that lets Nathan Fillion be Nathan Fillion and that's the appeal as far as I can tell. At some point I probably will watch the whole series, but it's not really a priority.

I'm hardly a discriminating viewer (as will be evident), but I'll chime in...

I enjoy Castle; it is better written than most and the cast's chemistry is entertaining. Also, it seems to be working through the entire Veronica Mars cast for guest stars, which I also enjoy for the nostalgia.

I'll watch the Big Bang Theory, but I think it is past its prime. The first two seasons were good, the third OK, the rest 'meh'.

I regularly watch 2 Broke Girls (the leads play off each other well, but the rest of the cast could be better), sometimes watch Community (good episode/awful episode ratio is about 30/70, and Chevy Chase should retire), and if nothing else available, Rizzoli and Isles (I like Angie Harmon's voice).

I used to watch Chuck, but I'm a season and a half behind.

I'm still bummed that The IT Crowd is done. The quality was inconsistent, and the show felt very British, but they sucked me in with the IT department answering the phone "IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

Did anyone watch Season 2 of The Walking Dead on AMC?

I haven't watched it yet, but I've been reading the comic book since issue #3.

I knew someone in college who was active in Doctor Who fandom on a national level. Understand that this was 1994, during the long hiatus of the series. If you took all the worst possible stereotypes about science fiction fans, he embodied all of them.

Even though I've heard that the new Doctor Who episodes are wonderful, I can't get past the theme music without being reminded of that guy. It's not a pleasant association.

I watched it. I have mixed feelings about Season 2, but if you haven't seen it I don't want to spoil anything. I felt like things dragged a bit near the middle. They really were focus-heavy on the drama aspect and I felt like their surrounding was too safe for my liking. They still had moments of engaging the walkers, but I felt like it was at their own stupidity.

I quite enjoy the new Dr Who, bar the occasional really cheesy episodes, but I can't stand Torchwood. The characters always seemed to be really bad at their jobs and their myriad personal problems seemed to be pretty much their own fault and entirely avoidable. They just all came off as generally contemptible and I could never bring myself to care what happened to any of them. That coupled with the writers apparent homo-erotic fixation just made the whole thing unwatchable. (Which is a shame, I kind of felt I should give the show more of a go since it's made and set only a few minutes walk from where I live)

Fangirls need to be thrown the occasional homo-erotic bone. I wouldn't begrudge them that.

There is a theory that I subscribe to, that most girls who are interested enough in science fiction and comic books and fantasy novels are at least bicurious if not more-than-curious. They're cool with cleavage-y adventure heroines in spandex and skintight leather and chainmail bikinis, and if they think it's fun to see dudes get it on too, I'm OK with that.

I have one episode left to watch. I don't exactly get the plot arc this half season beyond simply surviving the challenges of living in a post apocalyptic world full of zombies.

In the first half a dozen episodes of Torchwood every single regular character had at least some sort of same sex encounter regardless of that characters apparent sexual orientation or weather it made any sense in the context of the plot at all. Throwing the fan girls (And boys, there's plenty of girl on girl in there as well) a bone is fine, and would be easy to work in to the plot given an openly bisexual main male character, Torchwood goes well beyond that though.

All of the characters in Torchwood are "sexually flexible."

Their states of "livingness" are also in flux, it seems....
