    Hurricane Irene

My understanding is the insurance companies write the policies but they are provided/underwritten through FEMA. State Farm used to administrate them as well. I'm not sure who does it now. Indeed I will, once I find it. It will be a few days of cleanup before I can go through stuff. Last...

    Hurricane Irene

No flood insurance as it isn't usually offered if your not in the flood plain and apparently if you are not in it and get the coverage, it does not cover all the damage. So I'm not even sure I could get coverage that would have paid for all the damages.

I feel your pain Handruin. But let me add this: State Farm said I'm not covered for any of the damage.

    Hurricane Irene

Reporting in from Exton PA here. Power out since 10pm last night. Despite diligent effort to try and get the generator working practically all day yesterday, it was non functional. So I tried to bail the water manually from the sump pump and dump it in the sink. This worked for only a couple...

    Something Random

Youngest son (6) decided shoving a pair of goggles, some pokemon cards and a couple hot wheels cars in the toilet was a good idea. The goggles were too far in. I didn't get them out till I took the toilet off the floor and got them out from the bottom.

Intervention - stop me buying a Gateway laptop

To counter those horror stories, we bought a HP dv6-2157us for about $530 a little over a year ago. It died just a few months out of warranty as in motherboard needed to be replaced. HP charged $348.74. But they never charged my credit card. When I called them up about it they offered to...

    America is ungovernable

    America is ungovernable

A household can have a budget but then that gets blown by unexpected medical expenses or household repair or even car repair. Similar happens for the US. In times of economic downturn, the social safety net costs more. In times of war, the defense costs more. Natural disasters also are...

    America is ungovernable

It is more important that the two are completely different types of income. Tax laws are complicated making tax revenue variable. Versus your salary or hourly wage is pretty easy to figure out and pretty steady for most people. Taxes come from many places but I'll just consider the income tax...

    America is ungovernable

Income for a household comes from employment or investments. Income for the country comes from taxes.

    America is ungovernable

Personal debt and US debt are not even the same type of thing. You can't compare household finances to that of the country. Which is why I'm sad that politicians seems to do this on occasion.

    Paid antivirus

I use NOD32 and usually recommend it. But twice in the last couple years, I have seen it miss stuff on other people's computers. I know nobody can be 100% but the times it does miss, then I have quite a bit of cleanup work. And a full scan takes hours so nobody does weekly full scans to catch...

    New TV ideas

The wii doesn't do HDMI. It does component I think. 420p is its limit. That said, we needed two HDMI one for the BR and one for the cable box. I would not go down in TV size. Especially with the black bars on most movies. I thought I wouldn't get black bars with my FullHD set, but there they...

    question HDD advice, PLEASE?

We had one of those WD scorpio black in our HP laptop. It started developing bad sectors just over a year. I have a seagate 500GB in my work laptop. Been running probably 2 years without issue, and that is with many hours of the day on it and daily transports between work and home.

    Plus Me.

+1 on the Google Apps gripe. They give some spiel about it needing to be tweaked for business. But there are plenty of us on google apps that aren't businesses. That and they don't have multiple account sign in for picasa. I have to log out and log in to another account to access my picasa...

    Cool Fan Idea

The original paper is from Jan 2010. Why don't we have these already? Saw this on reddit yesterday and read the original paper. The air cushion is small, they compare it and its mechanism to that of a hard drive and the heads floating above it. So we are talking very small cushion of air and...

Windows 7 - Move Users Directory To Another Drive

Thanks, found that. There are two methods used: 1. Change the registry ProfileList entry 2. Symlink the Folder. This program appears to use the first method. I was leaning toward the second method (explained in the lifehacker article). But I think I was leaning that way because I wasn't going to...

Windows 7 - Move Users Directory To Another Drive

So I'll be reinstalling windows 7 on my new ssd and then I want to move the users directory to my 1GB samsung drive. Returned the tiffen filter kit, bought the $75 b+w polarizer. Should get it soonish. Regarding the 35mm 1.8 lens. I normally shoot with the 70-300mm VR lens. I _really_ miss the VR. My first outing resulted in many blurry photos. I thought it would be fine and just use a larger aperture...

Relatively inexpensive with the emphasis on relatively. I guess for the usage of this lens it will mostly be indoors and maybe outdoor nature shots. So the UV filter is probably not necessary. I see 18 B+W 52mm circular polarizers on B&H. Should I get the $48 dollar one?

Well the UV filter was dirty at the edges and won't come clean. So that filter kit is getting returned. I really just wanted the polarizer and UV filter. I wasn't really sure what the neutral density filter was for. I plan to keep the UV on the lens all the time. I have a $15 tiffen on my...
