    spinrite v6

Anybody use spinrite? I tried using it on my Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R motherboard with the F7 bios version (this is an Award BIOS). I had to disable AHCI mode and set the SATA mode to disabled so it emulates PATA. This is just so FreeDOS can boot off the CD. But it gave me an error that...

Best place to buy Samsung HDDs

Weird. I used samsung's ESTool to low level format the drive but it errored out. Then I erased the drive with their tool. Now it checks out fine with chkdsk and their estool. I think I'll let spinrite at it for a while to see what it says.

Best place to buy Samsung HDDs

Hey I went to samsung's website to RMA one of my 1TB drives but it seems to say what is up above, that you have to go back through the channel you bought the drive from. Is this true or is there some secret place I'm not looking?

I ran two tests in each of hdtach's modes quick and long. Here they are http://willrickards.net/images/hdtach/ This isn't a great test because it was running from the drive itself. But I didn't feel like taking the drive out of the laptop just for this. But if you want me to run other...

    500 GB

Well I found a program to adjust the APM and AAM settings of the drive: http://code.google.com/p/quiethdd/wiki/quietHDD It worked, clicking is gone. Must of been the head parking agressively to save power. I only wish the program could tell when my computer was docked or undocked.

    500 GB

Well the drive seems fast. But it keeps making this noise like the head parking or something. It keeps testing fine via chkdsk no bad sectors. But the noise has me worried. I can't find any AAM setting tool for this drive either.

I've ordered from mwave quite a few times over the years. Always a good experience. But I have nowhere near the volume of someone like merc or ddrueding. I only order maybe once per year. The cardboard box was a bit dinged up, probably thrown by the delivery people, but it weighed like...

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to shoot some more with the advice and post a revised shot if I can get some. To answer some of the questions: - I shoot in raw so I can adjust the picture later. I almost always need to brighten the images after I shoot them. - Yes I'm shooting in shutter speed...

Can you guys tell me what I'm doing wrong in my bird pictures. Here is an example, nikon raw NEF file. http://willrickards.net/images/DSC_0088.NEF It doesn't look sharp enough to me. ESATA/USB Drive Enclosures/Adapters

Well I found my laptop (Dell D630) doesn't support ESATA or expresscard. And there really is no point getting a cardbus ESATA adaptor. I wish they'd let us spec out our own laptops at work. So instead of an external (ie MX-1) I just ordered a 500GB 7200 RPM drive to put in it. Running my VMs...

    Laptop 500GB drive roundup?

Anybody out there done a 2.5" 500GB drive round-up? I can't seem to find any with google search. Google really should exclude product pages when you put review in the keywords or something like that.

    ESATA/USB Drive Enclosures/Adapters

The antec looks nice. I guess tapping power from the power supply would work for the other. The black X was the one I read some bad things about. There are certainly a lot of good reviews. But the few bad reviews seem to indicate it killed their drive. That makes me nervous about it.

    sysprep - then constant reboot

Here I thought sysprep removed all hardware information from the machine and redetected it. Lesson learned I guess. I had figured this out after googling about the reboot problem. It was definitely a HAL difference, single to dual processor. Also the hard drive was on an adapter card in the...

    sysprep - then constant reboot

After it was clean, sysprep didn't work I think. I had to do a repair install. Either way I got him the fixed PC. Weird issue with the drive letter though. ESATA/USB Drive Enclosures/Adapters

Are there any good ESATA/USB Drive Enclosures/adaptors? I remember a thread where we were trying to find the best one around. I looked at those ones that you put the hard drive in the top and there seems to be plenty of bad reviews of them as cheap junk. I have two needs 1) for my laptop at...

    sysprep - then constant reboot

Well I tried a SP2 CD for a repair install and no go. So I begin to think there is a problem with the windows install that is preventing sysprep and the repair install from working. So I reimage the drive with the backup, throw it in the old machine with a fan pointing at it on high. Did I...

    sysprep - then constant reboot

Now I tried a slipstreamed XP HOme SP3 repair install (at the second prompt). It does the setup thing and gets to detecting devices and then just reboots. Another loop. Onboard video with Dual-head capability?

Yeah but they were one of the only ones with a dual head dvi card. You can find plenty of the single dvi port ones (ebay seemed to have loads) but the duals were rare. And I couldn't see how they could possibly screw up putting some Silicon Image chips on a board with two dvi connectors. I...

Yes a friend rented a prius while his car was in the shop. He let me drive it a bit. That is when I found out how weird driving it really is. Aside from the constantly distracting center display, the performance off the line was delayed as the motor has to start back up first. So you really...

If I remember correctly the only thing that utility did is fix the disconnect in an internal register between the two CPUs. Differences in the multi core architecture may cause the difference in the first place.
