Weird. I used samsung's ESTool to low level format the drive but it errored out. Then I erased the drive with their tool. Now it checks out fine with chkdsk and their estool. I think I'll let spinrite at it for a while to see what it says.

Hey I went to samsung's website to RMA one of my 1TB drives but it seems to say what is up above, that you have to go back through the channel you bought the drive from. Is this true or is there some secret place I'm not looking?

Well I found a program to adjust the APM and AAM settings of the drive: http://code.google.com/p/quiethdd/wiki/quietHDD It worked, clicking is gone. Must of been the head parking agressively to save power. I only wish the program could tell when my computer was docked or undocked.

Well the drive seems fast. But it keeps making this noise like the head parking or something. It keeps testing fine via chkdsk no bad sectors. But the noise has me worried. I can't find any AAM setting tool for this drive either.

Well if it doesn't have a 64bit processor, XP x64 isn't for you. Not sure if the 32bit server 2003 will work better.

Suggestion: Install XP Pro x64 or server 2003 instead and get native 4GB support no switches or anything. Sure it will be an additional cost though. I'm running XP x64 and have no real problems. You probably want to make sure you have drivers for all the hardware on the laptop first though...

If I remember correctly the only thing that utility did is fix the disconnect in an internal register between the two CPUs. Differences in the multi core architecture may cause the difference in the first place.
