I'm telling you it is the refresh rate. The monitor in the wall is probably an old CRT and the refresh rate is set to something higher than 60Hz. So LCD monitors can't take that signal over a vga splitter.

Well XP detects what type of monitor you have. You can install inf files for monitors that usually tell it what resolution and frequencies it supports. Maybe it is trying to push a frequency or something the other monitor doesn't support. What monitor is in the wall?

So I found out that you can run spinrite in a VM. You just have to use the ISO as the installation media and give it full control of the hard drive you want to scan, which obviously isn't the boot drive. It is running now.
