I continue to maintain the best way to clean one of these computers is to format and install from scratch. You waste way too much time trying to clean them.
See my adventures in this thread.
I bought 2 of the 1TB F1 HD103UJ.
Both reported Media Errors.
I even tried getting to their level 3 support 3 times. Each time I got disconnected. They were ready to give me an RMA with mine.
I don't think the drives are bad. I think either the firmware is...
I can't get reliable production out of the windows SMP client.
It requires intervention on an almost weekly basis.
File IO error on this work unit or hanging while not connecting to F@H.
So I'm pretty sure you can't even compare systems as the client itself is not stable.
So I expected a bit more of a manual than a fold out piece of paper with the charger. Also it makes this high pitched eeeeee in regular intervals. Kind of annoying. It did positively identify one of my older suspect cells as bad.
I bought the MH-C9000 and 8 maha imedion cells from thomas distributing.
Amazon was out of stock on the 8 pack of eneloops, otherwise I would have bought those.
Click "User CP" in the top bar. Click "Edit Options" in the left menu that comes up. Scroll down to Thread Display options and uncheck the last checkbox "Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)". That way if you want to see the image you click on it, otherwise it is...
Any new developments in battery world?
I'm about to pull the trigger on buying an MH-C9000 and 8 sanyo AA eneloops.
These wiimotes are power hungry. And I thought about getting the nyko stand charger but after seeing it in person, I think I'll just use the eneloops in a regular charger.
Just a note to the Eset's NOD32 users out there.
There is a new v3 and a new product that includes a firewall.
The v2.7 software isn't updating automatically to the v3 software.
But it is a free upgrade if you have a license. You just need to download and install. I installed with the 2.7...
well xp has the built-in firewall and a security center that actually warns you if you don't have AV or your AV is out of date. Also XP feels more polished than 2000. I have high hopes for the next version of windows.
Well you are a gaming connoisseur. Me, I haven't played any video games since I was still living at my parent's house. And that was probably on a SNES. I've seen a few PC based titles but never played them.
My 5 year old kid had a vsmile that he played games on. The vsmile is not very good...
Also the machine is so quiet in regards to hard drive noise. I can't even tell the samsung is working over the fans. And that is with AAM turned off. I may have to turn those case fans down a notch.
That is the conclusion I came to. I just wanted it confirmed by level 3 support. I can't really call them at night since they close at 8pm ET.
Anyway I decided yesterday night to just use one anyway and start the restore. It said 1 day 7 hours. And it wasn't lying. It is still going little...
Pictures of the samsung tests.
They have been resized and I cut the portion of the serial except for the last 3 digits. http://willrickards.net/images/HD103UJ/
BAH! Three times I called samsung and each time they try to transfer me to tier 3, I get disconnected. At least the last time the voice said, we are in a meeting please call back later. I suspect it is just a firmware problem or a problem with the diagnostic software that caused the media...
Hmm see this link to a ?german? forum
When I translate it with babelfish.altavista.com I think he is saying samsung support is saying wait till after january when the newer firmware will be out.
I called samsung support earlier today. They escalated it to level 2. Then the tech their wanted...
So the bios update did resolve the detection of the hard drives. They are now seen as 1000GB. But the samsung diagnostic still complains about a media error. On both drives. And now an ecc error. But windows chkdsk doesn't find anything wrong with either drive.
Hmm maybe it is just a bios thing....
http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2534
According to this page the F7 bios fixes some problems with 1TB drives.
So time to flash the bios.
Newegg (NJ warehouse). They seemed to be packed properly with bubble wrap and peanuts. I probably would have done one more wrap around of bubble wrap myself but they certainly weren't moving around in the box.
But I think this drive was DOA before shipping to me. The failure wasn't bad...
I looked through the bios but I guess I can look again.
One of these days I have to update the bios but there is the issue of how. Normally you can use the gigabyte bios updater from windows but this is windows xp x64. And last I checked they didn't have a version for that.
And wouldn't you know it, the 92mm PWM fan I got for the ninja mini makes the heatsink just a hair too big for the lid to go back on the case correctly. Guess I'll use the 80mm fan that came with it or leave it off altogether.
This case sure gets dusty with all these air holes in it. Maybe I...
Well got the samsung drives and put one in.... as well as the ninja mini cpu cooler. But it is only seen as 32MB in acronis true image, wtf? And windows XP x64 install disk doesn't even see the samsung drive. So I downloaded the samsung hd utils iso image and am running a low level format...
At work I keep a current year archive and then an archive. I have auto archive setup to archive to the current year archive anything older than 2 weeks.
At the beginning of the next year, about three weeks in, I copy the contents of the current year archive to the archive.
The archive is...
I'm not sure I agree that HD companies are complacent. I think the increased density and perpendicular recording were significant hurdles requiring quite a bit of research.
I also think 1TB is not that significant an amount of space. It is probably plenty for now for the average computer...
Oh and just so it is noted, the random lockups I used to have with my old system are no more. The box runs 100% stable running F@H 24/7. So I still consider the old motherboard suspect and haven't made that old machine into a linux folding machine yet. Every weekend there seems to be...
So I think switching orientations (horizontal to vertical) was not good for my boot drive, you know that scsi one I had to do all that work just to get in the box? You see it has developed quite a few bad sectors. I already had to replace this drive under warranty once a couple years back...
Any thoughts on the samsung F1 1TB drive?
I see it is only 279.99 on newegg. But the reviewers there were complaining about the price. But it is cheaper than the other 1TB drives I saw on newegg (excluding WD).
Tom's Hardware seems to like them. That was just the only review I found in a...
They cheated though... using parachutes for landing.
Real flying squirels don't use parachutes. They probably don't fly through mountains either though.
