    Should we ban disposable batteries?

Are these fancy chargers hard to use? Are they any better than the charger that comes with the eneloop package at costco?

    Hard Drive cooling question

Yes I think we know the hole is not for heat release. Though heat would cause pressure to rise so it sort of is but... I would think the motor that spins the platters is the hottest part. And that is typically on the side with the electronics. Also the chips themselves generate heat. So...

    Hard Drive cooling question

Take an old hard drive apart and see if the top and bottom are coated with anything but the side are bare metal. But I think the metal on the sides of the hard drive is much thicker than the top. And the air hole is on the top of the hard drive. So I would guess the heat is supposed to go out...

    1GB then and now

Are we sharing first PC stories? Well mine was a packard bell 486 SX 25Mhz system. I have no idea what storage system it had. I think I upgraded it to a DX 50Mhz or something. Yes my 8GB flash drive seems huge compared to the storage of that entire computer. Yet we fill it up faster now...

Would you like a used one? My recently decommissioned system had the stock cooler on it. You can have it if you want. I bought a new cooler to replace it anyway.

    Should we ban disposable batteries?

Where can I get these eneloops? I think the answer is in another thread but might as well consolidate the knowledge. As for the ban... I just bought a pack of 20 duracell AA. Kids toys go through them quite quickly... especially those plug in tv video games.

    Great employers

Argumentative today are we? There are plenty of toxic chemicals in an office building. These are some of the most mold infested and toxic places. Nobody cleans them. Physical harm... you mean from johnny in the next cube that went on a killing spree from the pressure? No physical labor...

Not many people are aware of the depths of crap in these crappy jobs. That is the news. And the complaint is the horrid working conditions.

    Great employers

Yeah my wife works at WIC and they mandate "time studies" which are something like 6 minute increments maybe 5, I forget exactly. My wife recently worked at nutrisystem's call center near where we live (relatively) and she didn't last two months. Her complaints sound very similar to time's...

Should There be a Ban on Incandescent Lamps?

I have mostly CFL in my house. Exceptions are the outdoor bulb out front (one of those yellow ones), the motion sensor out back in the driveway, and the bulbs for the chandelier in the dining room. There really needs to be a solution for the chandelier bulbs. But if I couldn't screw these CFL...

    Per-Folder View Options?

Also this: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa969337.aspx You might be able to mark it a system folder like windows or program files. That way windows might hide the contents by default until you unhide it?

Pre google some hits on "shell extension show hidden file" http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=692 (a vbscript file that toggles the setting) http://www.msfn.org/board/Here_s_shell_extensions_t52524.html (a shell extension that adds a right click menu to do the same I think)

Intel's upcoming skulltrail platform - dual socket penryhn board (socket 771 but uses specially adapted desktop cores, not the server cores. What you are looking for? Maybe but it will probably be expensive and isn't exactly out now but soon.

Dual, quad core and winXP pro

You could use windows XP Pro x64 edition. Then you would actually be using the windows 2003 kernel. If you look at the coverage of IDF I think intel was demoing a platform for the high end that was two socket. I think this page at anandtech has some details. Not sure when/if it will come out?

Okay everyone was answering your actual question. So I'll ask the real question: why? Why isn't 4 cores enough? Are you trying to be a F@H monster?

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Personally I was looking for the april's fool joke thing on it or something. But it looks legit. I also wondered about the longevity. If the DNA would break down from the heat or something over time. I wonder how much post processing they have to do on the sperm? I'm not even sure where on...

I succumbed to desire. I ordered one with this fan. My goal for the weekend is to find the right place to put the computer. I'm heading to ikea to see if I can find a nice thing I can put in this corner that will work better than this desk. I'm thinking a custom desk would be best but I have...

    NSK2400 build notes

So in this thread I determined the NSK2400 only support coolers shorter than 12cm. The came out with an ultima 90 cooler but that is still 139mm. Still too tall. But the intel stock cooling seems not to be that great. It is very variable depending on ambient temps. And it doesn't keep it...

    Milestone

Reviving old threads happens quite a bit here, paugie. Whether it is because we are such a small group and new posting members are few, so we tend to bring back threads we know about... or maybe it is just the habit of some of the older members here. 100K posts, woohoo.

    NSK2400 build notes

I'll take my own thread a bit off topic... yesterday I setup my mom's new computer - a dell deal with an X2 3800 and 2GB of ram etc for like $400. Her old hard drive was 8GB with only like 5.7GB used. I could have transferred the data all on my little corsair 8GB flash drive, but I forgot it...
