    Music

Hi all, been a while since I've been around. Too much happening professionally, and not really at a breaking point yet, but this has been bugging me for a while. There are colliding time signatures in this, right? Or is it simpler than my brain is trying to make it?

    Alternatives to Amazon

I'm pretty sure the issue is with the delivery company themselves. I've been getting a lot of "undeliverable" stuff lately, from B&H and other places as well. It is true that Amazon is the only one that proactively sends a message (the others just arrive late without notice) unless you actively...

DJI drones - New Mavic 2 pro announced tomorrow

DJI's new products are one step away from preventing this kind of thing, but that hardly matters. Homebrew stuff is really easy to build and operate. Honestly, calling this a "drone" issue is misleading. This could have been done with RC airplanes decades ago. This is people doing stupid and...

Yubico Yubikey - increasing your authentication for services

I have one in a drawer. The only place I deployed it properly was when I was very active in the bitcoin stuff. Google Authenticator is just so much easier for most things, and adds at least 50% of the security? @LunarMist: It doesn't make logging into stuff easier, instead it makes your...

    Home NAS

That seems a reasonable conclusion, particularly with encryption running. With it only connected to a single computer, I'd be tempted to look into a disk enclosure that uses some other more direct interface to the PC (so it can use your (likely very fast) computer to do a lot of the work)...

Samsung Note 9 - anyone else using this phone?

I've got one. Pre-ordered the 512GB (mainly for the extra ram) and have been using it since the day it released. Quite happy with it; even tested the weather sealing by forgetting it in my shorts while sailing a catamaran in southern mexico. I only use the stylus as a camera shutter remote, and...

http://prntscr.com/lntwry Getting there. Exact alignment of the monitors will need to wait until I get some help. But in case anyone was wondering, yes, you can drive a pair of 5120 x 2160 @ 60hz panels off a single 2080ti. Keep your gaming to just one of them, though. 22m pixels is too much...

I'm not sure there is enough tech advancement in NAS to warrant new units? 10GbE, SSD caching, RAM upgrades....the rest is really just software, and they have been making progress on that. Their sync to NAS and sync to cloud stuff has gotten better within just the last 3 months.

If you are willing to pay for a domain and have someone competent manage it for you (I'd recommend Google), you can do neat things. A part of my job is monitoring stuff, that will be on the top screen. Keep in mind each one of these screens is 5120 x 2160 pixels, and 34" diagonal, so "really short" probably isn't the right description.

Lunar, I set my keyboard on it on my desk. That way I don't have to look up while I hunt and peck. This is why I needed such a large screen. I kid, of course. I bought two, one works and is in use. But the setup looks kinda sad with that spare VESA mount sitting unused...

I really don't want a full sized reciever in my office. The volume knob on the daskeyboard works fine. The rest would be nice, but I don't need an amp, either. Something the size of a paperback would be ideal.

Agreed on all that. I use Synology units with 10GbE Ethernet. SSD really only makes sense when there is a queue of IOs. For single user stuff it isn't necessary. The 10GbE, though, is bad-ass. My current home unit is a Synology DS1817+ with the RAM maxed out and a 2x 10GbE card in it. One of...
