Yup, about once every couple months. Coordinate with some old friends and game all night. It used to be in person, but now we have families and live all over the place. Gaming from work keeps me from waking the family, plus the internet connection is better. A bottle of wine and about 600ml of...

30Hz is fine for anything but gaming. My first 4k display was 30Hz, and I appreciated the pixels more than the refresh.

I occasionally work as well. But I have a 4-year old, and a small house. If I want actual time to myself, I need to leave.

I've been playing a lot of Eve Online, Kerbal Space Program, World of Warships, and Civilization V lately. A single 1080TI should be able to do 4k@120 on those with some settings dialed back. And this is my work computer, but I play games here as well. Right now it is 8:30PM and I'm at work...

Lunar, be sure to have it set up as firmly as possible. My grandmother made her wishes known to me for years, but her mental faculties faded with her health, and by the time it was time she was in full fear/denial mode and there was nothing I could do. There were two years at the end that I'm...

I hadn't. And probably don't care enough to switch immediately, but like that other similar platforms exist that we could switch to if needed. Thanks!

    Home NAS

Agree on the SFP+, multi-interface cards are cheap enough that with small installs you can bridge between devices and skip switches altogether if you like.

But only $80 more ($220 vs $300) and IMO the Sennheiser sounds better.

The quality on my HE400i did dissapoint. The cables developed static when moving within a month and the foam earcup came off within 6 months of daily use. The sound is great, but I'll be going back to Sennheiser next time I buy.

    question New Computer

I try to get one screw through some hole somewhere, but double-sided tape is fine. If the case isn't going to move, I've had them dangling for years without issue ;) Of course, the proper solution is to M.2 and not worry about cables/mounting at all.

Second opinion on some electrical calculations

Entire event scrubbed. Still exploring, but the project does not have any priority. Quite a bit of the equipment was purchased, so low-level tinkering will continue.

    Some work on my A3

I don't imagine I'm the only one that always does a bit of research and has the options front of mind. For the last few months the car hasn't been registered, so I knew it would be time soon. The three options I had on my short list were a lightly-used 2017 S3 for $41k, a moderately used 2015...

Whelp, the A3 was cited for no reg (can't be registered in CA). I've now registered for non-operation, and it is for sale if anyone is interested. New car is a '16 VW GTI Autobahn with DSG and an APR Stage 1 ECU and TCU tune. Yes, all this happened today.

    Some work on my A3

For parts it looks like about $20k, the labor is a bit of a question. I'm fortunate enough to have friends who are retired professional fabricators and race car engineers, who have the facilities, tools, and skills to do that part of the job well and for beer money. The electrical is pretty...

Still working on convincing the Mrs, but it is looking good so far. At the moment I'm just wondering if the controller supports dual-motor operation; the suspension/chassis seems to have room for one front and rear. As far as battery goes, there is certainly enough room to add what I'd like. I'm...

The car feels much faster than that, but there was wheelspin to about 35mph (all 4; was slipping down the crown of the road a bit). Got the CEL fixed, but it still won't pass the "visual inspection", or the fact that the 2nd O2 sensor is bypassed, or some other stuff. Kinda gave up on that...

    Mirrorless Cameras (MILC) and Lenses

I'm pretty sure mirrorless better fits my new usage pattern (closer to a P&S, but not willing to give up features). So the question is whether I should unload all my Canon gear and go Sony, or hold off until the Canon mirrorless arrives and keep the glass.

New phone time v. LG G4 bootlooped

Entirely reasonable to ignore our suggestions; we are a very different type of user than you are. My screen is on probably 3 hours a day, so spending more makes sense for me. With your usage profile $250 seems the right price.

New phone time v. LG G4 bootlooped

I have had a second phone for about 3 weeks now, S8+ on Sprint (loaner, they want our business). I really don't like how narrow the screen is, and the fingerprint reader is in the wrong spot, and the amount of bloat Samsung puts in their phones (Bixby? Really?) seems to slow the thing down. For...

Second opinion on some electrical calculations

So far it is working fine, but I am still struggling with the logistics of delivering enough power to the strip for full operation. Thermals are also an issue. The metal mesh might have a hard time with the tape, not a lot of surface area available. Contact cement is an interesting idea; is there a foam-melting concern there as well?

The trick is it needs to work with the metal mesh, foam inner, and leather(ish) outer at the same time. No CA because of the foam. Hot glue? Epoxy of some kind?
