Mine were CNet, Intel, HP, Dolby Labs. Those are the only big companies I've given notice from.

    N.V.M.e. or "Envy Me"?

For me it is the letters in sequence. Only place I've heard it spoken is on a Linus Tech Tips video, and that is how they said it.

    Something Random

In the past I've given two weeks notice, but have always been asked to leave immediately. Typical security protocol at larger companies in sensitive positions.

My inital config won't include a switch at all. The 10GbE card in the computer and the NAS will each have two ports. One of each will to go the normal 1GbE switch. The other will connect the two directly. These will have IPs in a different range. You may need to change the interface metric to...

SSDs - State of the Product?

It is too slow in comparison to all-SSD solutions (the only alternative, IMO). I'm able to fully saturate the 10GbE connection for large periods of time, and the access time for all the data I've asked for so far is what I would expect from an SSD on a fast network.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I just bought some spinning platter HDDs (6x 10TB), but there is no way I'd run a program off of it or even access that data directly without some 3-tier SSD / RAM caching to make it usable. 43.64TB usable and wicked fast for <$5k. I'll do some performance testing once the array is calculated...

RAID arrays can be bigger, but once an array is greater than 16TB, online expansion is no longer possible. I refer you to the fine print here: https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/model.php?II=237

Intel X299: What is it good for?

I'm still waiting. Haven't even looked to check on availability yet. I'm thinking the boards released after the launch set will be worth waiting for (these certainly seemed rushed). Not necessarily second gen, but I won't be surprised if more boards from the majors show up in a month or two.

With PS/2 inputs for sure no. USB could in theory pass stuff through memory on one of the devices. A memory stick left in the keyboard? I know some mice have a USB storage portion for drivers/profiles...

Indeed. This switch is loud (I have some already). For this application it doesn't matter. I'd love to have a 6-8 port fanless 10GbE switch.

Intel X299: What is it good for?

AMD may have a better value proposition, but I don't think there is any chance of them having the absolute fastest solution. If they got within 30% of that I'd be impressed.

There isn't time of use, but there are usage tiers. The bottom level is <0.10 cents/kwh (even in the winter I never leave this tier anymore). The top level is >0.50 cents/kwh (previously 80%+ of my consumption was here). Yes, I use a lot of electricity.

Intel X299: What is it good for?

I need to look into what a "maximum overkill" spec even looks like. First assumption is that the CPU will be the one with the highest frequency; if there is a tie for highest frequency, more cores will be preferred. On the motherboard side, I hear talk of 4x M.2 NVMe RAID0 native to the CPU...

The client knows that if the on-site backup and the off-site backup (5 miles away) fail, the RTO is 1 week. This is acceptable for them.

    Cloud Backup

I'm now trying a significant backup from a Synology box onto Backblaze using the client written by Synology. Only about 3TB, but tens of millions of files. All over a slow (6Mbps if I'm lucky) connection. Jury is still (way) out. I'll give it a month and see what it looks like.

    NAS Drive

Not really, but at this point I am familiar enough with Synology products that going that route will simplify the deployment process and allow me to get to testing more quickly. The TS-831X has more bays, but the feature set seems similar.

Yup, just 20TB. Mostly running the storage for the 3 VMs that will be on a pair of ESXi machines using all the redundancy options, some basic file server stuff, and storage for the security cameras and call recording package. Only 5 concurrent users at that location, but they make ~$11M/year so...

    NAS Drive

Not the fastest, but good for testing. The smallest unit that ticks all the feature boxes I was looking for. I went with 4x 10GB to fit a normal SATA SSD because the NIC and M.2 couldn't fit at the same time. Shame about that.

Paid $406 each for 4x ST10000NM0016 - still waiting on one. Will be going into a Synology DS1517+ along with 16GB of RAM, X540T2, and a 1.2TB S3500. This will be to play with iSCSI hosting of ESXi VMs for vMotion and possibly HA along with normal fileserver duties.

    question New Computer

Agreed, more cores than needed for our kind of workflow, but it seems that the one with the most cores also has the highest clock. I'm still focused (as most users should be) on single-core performance, but that means the high-end chip anyway (unlike previous generations).

    Desktop Diagnostic Problem

Reseating everything is a good call. My other guess would be temp related. Does the machine usually run all the time? It seems that every time it has been off for a while (to have service done) it works well for a while before acting up.

I don't need more than one body, and 20MP+ is enough. Full-frame would be nice for DoF, shutterless would make the multi-hour time-lapse sessions less guilt-ridden, silent photos create more options for the family shots. From what I've seen, the A9 is better low-light?

    question New Computer

Yup. Processors simply aren't a thing that is moving significantly at the moment. Hopefully AMD will put up enough of a fight for Intel to step it up a notch. In general you are interested in the high-end desktop CPUs that are based on the server CPUs, rather than the mid-range desktop CPUs...

    question New Computer

Indeed. Your current machine is close to current top-of-the-line machines. There is little for you to gain by upgrading your CPU. It might be best to focus on improving the storage subsystem, graphics card, or memory.

Home Theater Receiver with per-input programmable volume adjustment?

Thanks for all the information. Handruin, really appreciate the research. The feedback I received from the customer is that the AppleTV volume is consistently lower by quite a ways. This may be purely based on the apps that they use, but this means it is good enough. Stereodude, it is in fact...

Putting together a simple system for a client. The two inputs are AppleTV and Comcast. Comcast is 20dB louder than the AppleTV. Best DYNDNS provider?

Thanks for the offer, but I'm pretty happy with the domain registrar I have now. It seems dyndns is good enough compared to the competition that I shouldn't bother changing all the names/clients I already have set up with them. Thanks all for your advice!

    Best DYNDNS provider?

Preferably free, but if I have to pay I'd rather use one with the best value (number of names, update rate, etc). I've had a free dyndns.org account before, but it it seems they really don't want me to use that anymore.
