    YouTube Recomendations

Thanks Dave, I'll check those later when I'll have some free time. Regarding the how-to guides, I've used some too. I few years ago, I fell on a video by EZ-Tool on how to make an RJ-45 connector. Before that, I missed maybe one-in-five connectors I made. Since then, I've never missed one...

    Something Random

I have a hard time finding interesting content on Youtube. Not helping is the fact that the top row on the front page is always showing shortcuts to videoclips of teenage girl music, like Taylor Swift and Nicky Minaj, both of whom I can't name a single song (not even hum the beat - but I...

I thought 21 was the legal age for alcohol in the States. Here, it's 18. Anyway, moderate your alcohol consumption while you're still in your teens. While you don't realize it, your brain hasn't fully developped yet (hence why most teens have trouble with risk assertion) and early alcoholic...

    Password Managers

I've used Keepass for the last few years. It's ok. One problem I've had with it is more admin-related than anything else : I often forget the passwords I've written to open some seldom used keepass files. So these are unusable when I end up needing them. I've never used lastpass.

Intel 750 SSDs booting in RAID1

That drive model is a consumer drive. It is meant to be used in a workstation, not a server. It communicates via the PCI-E interface, but a RAID controller has SAS 12Gbps interface. At the very least, you'd need a server supporting NVMe drives. The drives you should be looking for are the...

It might be because Windows decides to stop powering off the drive when it's not being used aftetr a while in order to save energy. My computer does this with my data drive. I run Windows 8.1. Unfortunately and unlike on some other devices like network cards, I don't see a section in the...

That's revolting. The state should force Verizon to pay back the higher fees they were allowed to charge for making the 45Mbps for everyone by 2015 promess, plus interest and a huge penalty for failing to meet their duty to the Pensylvania state customers. Their CEO looks like a rat BTW.

Oh look it's new Desktop CPUs from Intel!

We get similar (or slightly lower) processing performance with 20W less power consumption per processor, so we'll end up with a slight overall reduction on our global energy needs. That's the good news. However, from a single user perspective, these new processors are a big "meh" to my eyes...

Garbage Collection Ruins SSD Performance for Virtualized Environments.

Given the price of enterprise SSD and the fact that you'll want redundancy (RAID1), the cost would be prohibitive. For instance, my two main virtualization nodes each have ~10 VM each. That would mean 10 SSDs without any redundancy or 20 with RAID1. For VMs needing more capacity than a single...

    Infiniband and 10Gb networking

I think you might be better of with a basic Cisco SG500X-24MPP for roughly the same price. You would need controller cards with SFP+ ports instead of RJ-45 ports for the 10G links though. There's also the Cisco SG500XG-8F8T for even more 10G ports, but it's ~3500$.

    Infiniband and 10Gb networking

That switch can't be more than 6 years old. The ports are not SDR or DDR Infiniband, they are QDR, so it's a lot more recent and significantly faster and modern. Of course it sounds like a jet engine. The rating I've seen is close to 60dB and the power consumption is around 300W. But it's...

Infiniband has a lower latency. I have no idea if it's more complicated to configure though, as I've never had to play with Infiniband devices. Both 10Gb networking gears and Infiniband are a significant upgrade versus commun gigabit network connections. Since I've configured quite a few...

RouterBoard (MikroTik) or Ubiquiti EdgeRouter - any good?

I'm with Howell: you don't need any dynamic routing protocol like OSPF. At most, if you have a static IP from your ISP, you could set a static route in your router for the default gateway, which has a much lower metric than an OSPF-learned route (1 versus 110) and is safer. I don't know if...

    Power weirdness

Such power fluctuations wouldn't affect hardware connected to an on-line UPS like Mercutio already has. Everything is already powered from the batteries. If there's a hit to take, the UPS will take it. However, on a line-interactive UPS like your APC probably is, your hardware might be at...

    Power weirdness

Is it a very dry room? The fact that most failures occured during winter, when heating is on, could also point towards a too low humidity level (and therefore a very high static electricity level). Power weirdness

Is it possible that you draw so much power on this circuit that you have brown outs? Power supplies, especially very efficient ones, don't like brown outs at all. It might be worth it to invest in an on-line UPS. They aren't cheap, but replacing 3 or 4 250$ PSU per year isn't either.
