    Tesla Powerwall

Read Ars Technica's report here. They won't ship it internationally before next year. Too bad, as I would have reserved one this morning. Who's in? It's certainly not very expensive for the power it can store. Anyone who thinks it is should take a look at industrial UPS battery packs. At...

    Gnodal switch on eBay

    Gnodal switch on eBay

Gnodal has been bought by Cray in 2012, according to what I read. Some of their switch models are regularly on sale on eBay, but the prices seem to be too good to be true. Their GS4008, which is a 40x10GE+8x40GE sells for only 3000$. It's an L2+ only switch, but still. They also have a 2U...

    Signature Length increase.

The goal of a short signature limit is IMO to maintain forum readability. I really haven't looked into this, but if there's a way to fix the caracters size to the smallest size, then I wouldn't mind a small bump in the allowed caracters number. Otherwise, abuse is at risk and too much screen...

    What happened to P5 ?

A memorial is for people who keep living. P5's remains won't be happier if we commemorate him or not. If members of his family aren't aware of his involvement here, it won't change anything for them either. That being said, if members of our forum want to do something to remember him, I'm not...

    HP Proliant ML350 G6 upgrade

I don't think the Dynatron heatsink would be enough. The fans inside the ML350 G6 are much slower than the 40mm fans inside a typical 1U server. The air pressure for the flow that would go into an heatsink with a small surface like the Dynatron would therefore be much less. I've found another...

We've inherited an HP Proliant ML350 G6 at the office. It only has a single modest Xeon E5620 inside and 8GB of RAM. I'm trying to find parts to upgrade it. Although a new processor pair and RAM are relatively easy to find on eBay, it is surprisingly hard to find a heatsink for this...

    Samsung 850 Pro 1TB: 490$

I've never seen it this low, hence why I post it here. Only for today, at Rakuten. The Samsung 850 Pro is probably the best consumer grade SSD on the market these days, so having it at less than 50¢ per gigabyte is a good deal.

    Cheap Power Supply

The cheaper they are, the simpler they generally are too. The cheaper ones almost always use low-quality components, especially capacitors, that barely do the job. I don't think cheap power supplies are more likely to fail at 240V than at 120V. I think they are more likely to fail, period...

SSDs - State of the Product?

It's more than enough for OS, your apps and your live data. You won't store your movies, your music and your pictures on an SSD. That's more the job of a bunch of multi-terabytes LFF drives, ideally in some form of RAID (a stripe is not RAID!) to insure redundancy.
