    question Defense against Ransomware

I generally tell it to keep the following: Last 3 changes One from over an hour ago One from yesterday One from last week One from every month permanently My theory goes that the further back things need to go, the more understanding the user is about re-keying data.

    IBM FlashSystem A9000

The new version of the software is natively Windows based with an SQL backend and doesn't puke with WAN-like latency as their old system (some real-time OS with Oracle 8i) did. It will run locally everywhere. No access gateways; I've built a private WAN spanning a couple mountain ranges and...

    question Defense against Ransomware

Outlook makes users particularly vulnerable, and I can't imagine the benefits being worth it. My best (not only) defense against ransomware is a near-real-time backup with versioning that doesn't honor deletes to a share that isn't accessible with any domain user permissions. The...

Nope, I left the decision with the software vendor. They already had a supported configuration that ran Citrix so we just went straight to that.

You've nailed it. Not having control over the TS clients causes all kinds of trouble. Not being able to train them is an issue as well. After we did a full lockdown with group policy things were a little better. After we went to Citrix and started only exposing apps instead of the desktop things...

    IBM FlashSystem A9000

Recently got a quote from a vendor. Someone we already have a functional system with, just needed to add a new module. $22k. $9k in software licenses, $10k in training and labor for setup, $3k in stuff that, even after I asked for clarification, still didn't know what it was. My second request...

Years ago, I once configured a server and then shipped it halfway across the country. It was handled so roughly during transport that a heatsink snapped off and tumbled around the inside cracking boards and breaking parts off components.

I've had a half-dozen or so root canals, probably should be in line for another 4 or so but I can't be bothered. When the nerve endings cause enough pain to prevent sleep or eating I'll have them killed off. Haven't bothered with crowns either, eventually I'll just get a set of implants and be...

Building own Router - Advantages ?

I've done untangle, smoothwall, and PFSense. They all do the things that routers need to do. Unless you have a very fast connection or specific interesting needs it is likely that a standalone router will do just as well with less power consumption. I'll be running a VM for my firewall soon...

I can understand the awkwardness. I managed to avoid it (at least in my head) by never even asking for a quote. Tire Rack just ships straight to his shop and I call to let him know they're mine after they arrive.

Perhaps the main parties losing control will eventually be enough to force a change to the system. Making votes more than a binary choice is the only way to prevent both sides from running towards the extremes.

...and some of the info I'm hearing now is discussing how many times faster a 1080 will be for VR vs. TitanX. VR is the main reason I went SLI in the first place, and I still haven't gotten my Rift!

The most impressive part of it in my opinion is the lower power consumption. Going from 2x TitanX to 1x1080 would reduce my power bill appreciably.

That also depends on the game. Kerbal Space Program was CPU limited (at least up until the 1.1 release) at any resolution and graphics setup. PhysX was unable to handle all the stuff (even with a TitanX dedicated to it).

Remaining GPU limited with just one of these would probably be a $1200 computer. 6700K, 512GB Samsung 950 EVO SSD, 32GB RAM, ~500W PSU.

One of the reasons I run a water cooling setup is that it discourages buying every conceivable upgrade instantly. Perhaps by the time my Rift arrives (still no ETA!?!?) they'll have a new top-end card that will allow me to go single-GPU.

The stand it ships with uses the 200mm set, there are threaded holes for a 100mm mount, but did I mention this thing is big? 3840x2160@60Hz via DP straight out of the box. Working great. Not a significant amount of glow/bleed. Color is a little off, but I can't say how much. When I bring the...

As you've said, there are great advantages to using vendor drives. IMHO, they are not worth it in any kind of storage rig. The first gen 32" 4k I bought also wasn't an Ultrasharp. I could attribute it to cautiousness concerning a 1st generation product and not wanting to damage the Ultrasharp brand, but it is more likely that the monitor doesn't meet some technical specification (inputs or whatever).

I recently put the 5th set of Conti DWS on my car, 109k miles now. The main reason I went with APR was that the local guy who did APR tunes was nice and knowledgeable. I don't think any of the tuners do rocket science or that their parts are exceptionally shiny.
