    Exchange Database Woes (Again)

Setting tiny mailbox sizes and restricting attachment sizes is so last millennium. Outsource your issues until you can get off such a crap platform.

    Exchange Database Woes (Again)

Yup, that is a problem. The last time I was dealing with Exchange I had a mailbox corrupt itself before reaching the official limit, ended up having MS deal with it. They saw the mailbox size (smaller than yours) and admonished me. When I mentioned that I was under the limit they said it was...

DIY Tesla power wall - how feasible is this?

Indeed. It seems that Lead-acid or flooded batteries are the better option. And as always, having more capacity is good for a bunch of reasons. 1. Charge/discharge rate per battery is lower for any power level 2. Charge level is easier to maintain away from extremes (batteries don't like being...

    Old Thinkpad, new activation wrinkle

What I find interesting about that is whether the codes have always been able to be used repeatedly (never tried), or that they are now handing out special codes that can be used repeatedly. If the latter, that means that they had planned for this since the beginning.

    Don't laugh.

There are better keyboards out there. It also depends on whether the company that makes your product decided to replace the stock keyboard (which normally has an enter key on it) with one of their own.

problem The search for new updates by Windows Update, takes too long

The only time I've seen something similar was when a previous update failed/crashed/corrupted. The fact that you've already tried a System Restore means that that probably isn't your problem.

    question Truecrypt

Truecrypt does support a mode where you could plausibly deny there was any hidden data at all. I'm grateful I don't need to worry about that one. The main mode is just making a bunch of stuff completely inaccessible to anyone without the password. Of course, with the internet and VPNs being what...

    question Truecrypt

Nope. 7.1a is the same as 7.1a. The assumption was that you didn't have it installed and that is why you were asking. It you already have TC 7.1a, there is no reason to believe that any other product out there is more secure.

Office copiers : Canon vs Xerox vs Konica Minolta

We use Google to run our e-mail system, and they have a 20MB limit. We also have DropBox Corporate, and they have a Google plug-in that embeds an interface that supports 10GB attachments though their service.

Office copiers : Canon vs Xerox vs Konica Minolta

We use Konica Minolta. And I did end up configuring an FTP server on the Synology box that holds the scans to make that work. No security, not happy. HR has a desktop unit connected via USB for privacy issues.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

Haven't used eBay in ages. Every once in a while I'm tempted, then someone posts something like this. Occasionally I'll take my chances with with someone who isn't at least "fulfilled by Amazon" on their platform, but that is as risky as I'll get.

Office copiers : Canon vs Xerox vs Konica Minolta

Xerox bad, Konica/Minolta a known evil (their networking is just a bit less reliable than I'd like, what do you mean you can't scan to a windows network share reliably?!) No experience with the others.

I want to replace all but one of the other computers in my house with locally connected virtual machines (as shown in the videos above). The build I have in mind is an older dual-Xeon with 128GB, 6x8TB, 4x512GB SSD, Intel 10GbE, some low-end Quadros, and maybe put a Titan on one of them. I'll start a thread on the project this afternoon.

An inch in 30 minutes probably counts as "getting rain". Looks like another inch at least today. Had to wire in a...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Indeed. I suspect it has to do with the size of the part compared to power consumption and how isolated it is from the rest of the motherboard. When those same chips are mounted to a 2.5" drive it isn't as big a deal.

SSDs - State of the Product?

FLIR One, not that expensive. ($250) Easy work justification. AC in server room wasn't keeping up, and the thermostat was giving poor readings. Turned out to be an air circulation issue. Also good for identifying hot spots in computers for instability or failing components. For example, the...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Just a warning for anyone looking to run M.2 SSDs, they get hot and will thermally throttle if you don't cool them. I even went so far as to use thermal epoxy to attach large heatsinks to mine, and the base of the drives is still the second hottest thing in the computer.

If disk backups are failing, you need to pull them. I might try to pull these, erase them every way you can think of, and then restore back. Or just replace them and hold onto these for a less critical project in the future.

Speed might be ok but the bandwidth would be too expensive for the security camera streams. Razzolink is a local wireless ISP that I have a really good relationship with. Yup, using Ubiquiti gear. The relay down into the quarry will be a sector antenna, probably one of these, to feed the different facilities (gatehouse, scales, processing, haul trucks, etc).
