    Lots of Snow

The last several years have been out of line with historical norms, not planning for this or something similar to be the new normal strikes me as slightly myopic.

    Home Solar

After starting the permitting process a bit on my own, I ended up having Solar City do it after all. I did get them to up the capacity to what I was after and drop the price a bit, but I won't see those savings until next year. Even without the fed and state tax benefits my usage is so high that...

    Lots of Snow

Solar panel efficiency drops considerably when there is more than 0.1" of snow on them. Enough battery capacity to keep space heaters running for a couple days would be insane. Running combustion-based heaters in a living space also isn't recommended. Might I suggest a generator in the...

    Best movie you've seen

I just watched The Martian for the first time (BluRay). It isn't a bad film, just absolutely sucks compared to the book. Can't blame anyone involved with the film, the audio book was at maximum density and 10+hrs long. It is no wonder that the characters seemed under-developed and the drama...

Blu-ray audio ripping - preserving LPCM

    Small case build

If you're looking for 4k gaming with a minimum of 60fps (so you can cleanly v-sync 60hz), my home1 rig can just barely do it. Hoping it will be enough for the 90fps minimum that the Oculus Rift wants.

Blu-ray audio ripping - preserving LPCM

USB powered is more convienent and easier to cable, but powered is also possible. For that matter, it could even be an internal drive. My systems don't live in cases, just shelves on the rack, so I could wire in whatever.

Blu-ray audio ripping - preserving LPCM

It seems my trusty Plextor PX-LB950UE is dying. Any recommendations for an external BluRay drive, specifically for ripping? What are the odds that any drive available now will be compatible with 4k BluRay when those come out?

Adblock Plus "Malware Domains" filter sub breaks YouTube

To be fair the $10 for YouTube Red doesn't really company to what I give them on Patreon, but I'm sure it is better than the ad revenue I wasn't going to give them anyway. I've also never seen a video trying to promote red-only content. AFAIK all the channels I watch are still entirely...

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

Nope. Not even informational. For the record, successfully creating a virtual disk also doesn't throw an event. I can create any space I like that isn't tiered, but anything with the "tiered" box checked errors with the same issue. Grr.

Adblock Plus "Malware Domains" filter sub breaks YouTube

Fun jobs work for a very small percentage of the people that want them (photographer, musician, sports, YouTuber, etc). Nothing, including this, is going to change that. If you have a small YouTube channel you also have a day job. Just like 99% of Hollywood. From what I've heard, the amount of...

    Windows 10

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

My main home workstation is now running Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 4. I haven't been this reckless in years. Anyway, while trying to create the tiered storage I'm after, I receive an error every time I try to create the virtual disk: This happens regardless of the volume size...

Yup. The computer I built for my kid has never been on the internet. I put in the same Win10 key as I did for my home machine, copied drivers and software over via thumb drive, and it has been working well for about a month now. No intent to hook it up to the net for years, so it can be a...

    Windows 10

Microsoft is making it very clear that they only want to support a single OS. I can't really blame them. I was very surprised when Win10 didn't represent a transition to a subscription model. Win10 is fine, and you can expect the experience in anything else to be bad and get worse.

This is my experience with Lenovo as well, even if you order a preconfigured system, they only include usable trays for the drives you ordered. The LA company I now order servers through fill the thing with useful trays no charge (after I asked).

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

I wouldn't be surprised if some BIOS default only allows storage adapters in any expansion slots? Does the system depend on a CPU-based GPU? Does the CPU you put in have on-board video? I don't think I tried a VGA adapter, but I can check it out Monday.

I'll second this. I thought the no-brainer S.O.P. was shoot in RAW and make as many of your adjustments (especially exposure/balance/channel stuff) before discarding that data by converting to something else (even TIFF or Photoshop, much less JPG). Am I missing something?

Yup. If the machine is projected to have a long life consider upping the capacity of SSD. This will fend off OS growth and balance writes across more cells.

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

After the drives are physically installed, it takes about 90 seconds to set up an array. Then (depending on RAID level and controller), waiting several hours for the array to build the first time. Really not hard at all.
