Microsofts free 'SyncToy'. Xcopy has a switch that will tell it to only copy files that have changed. It is included in all Windows systems. XXCopy- a free program that is basically xcopy on steroids.

It is only connected to 5 other computers. I monitored it for a while and it basically did nothing. I believe it is there for log-in purposes on the computers. :scratch: This setup was brought in from an outside vender. A domain server, an sql server, and another server I'm not sure what it is...

In my quest to virtualize some of our computers/servers, I have decided to use VMWare server on Linux. I begain trying the usual Linux builds like Ubuntu, Debian, and Suse and Fedora. I decided that using Linux Server would be the best bet though. While searching for a reliable Linux Server OS...

I just installed Fedora 11 and it also contains SELinux. It is just as bad as Vista UAC. I disabled it.

From my limited experiance with DHCP servers: The server can be set to hold an address for MAC address/computer. This is usually set by the administrator when the server is installed. At work, our DHCP server is set for seven days. If a computer is off longer than that, it gets a different address.

I think I would wait for the next generation of SSDs. Hopefully they will have the slow down over time issue resolved. And, Windows 7 has proper drivers (?) for SSDs. http://techreport.com/articles.x/17136

What irritates me is the pitiful amout the fed spends on the Vets. They sure spend enough to get them wounded and mamed, but hardly anything for help. :cry:

I have a hunch that the drivers are available on the Intel site. Look at motherboards with 965 in their part number.

When setting up a virtual OS in VMWare Server, the recommended memory is far less than you would normaly have installed for that OS. Does using this recommended memory cause problems? Thanks

Most of the printers we have are HP. Most in the 800 series. I searched for drivers a while back but gave up. I have only used Acronis one time on Vista. That was a test and it seemed to work. I would imagine that the newer versions work fine.

A couple of other "features" of Vista-Redux. In Win2k and XP you can boot from the CD and do a 'Repair Install'. This has save me countless hours of work. It's not available in Vista-Redux. Try this: (make a backup if you have important stuff on the hard drive) Use your favorite hard drive...

At work we will still be using XP untl you can't get hardware drivers, or the Corp Gestopo mandates a change, or I retire. With the removal of the Classic desktop, the almost worthless Task Bar, the screwed up Start Menu, the lack of drivers (we would have to replace a s**t load of printers)...

I think we all have "Been there, Done that" at least once. I know I have on a couple of occasions. Don't worry about it. :smile:

At the rate UPSs fail at work, I think they are time bombed by the manufacturer. They need to sell new ones.

I believe you can change the drive letter before you reboot. You will get a warning the some files will not be accessable blah, blah, blah. Leave the failing drive in and give it the new drive Ds old drive letter. A drive letter swap. Reboot. Make a backup of your system first, just in case.

Sometimes I'm a little slow... I went through the same thing trying to install Server 2003 on a Supermicro motherboard. I ended up using a SATA CD drive to get it loaded. Ther was a work around posted , I believe, on Newegg. It was in a review of a Supermicro board. Sorry I didn't remember...

On occasion I have seen Windows installer fail because it did not have drivers for hard drives / RAID arrays, even if you are not installing on them. Win 7 might 'see' the Vista install, but can't write to the boot partition of Vista without drivers. (Vista and Win 7 both create a 200Meg boot...

Your probably right. The first time I installed it, it wiped out everything. It was a test box, so no big deal. Can you buy WHS without hardware? At first it was only going to be available from venders pre-installed. That's when I lost interest in it.

One thing to keep in mind if you install WHS. It will erase and format every drive attached to the box you are installing it on. During the Beta, a lot of people missed the warning and it wiped out a lot of their stuff. It needs to be on a stand alone box.
