For the first time of my life, I'll have a job I'll like.

More than likely, you'll be stuck with those systems too. They can't afford to upgrade the hardware or software, and you need to make them better and faster -- the life of an IT professional. Coug, did you wear your t-shirt with the big hammer on the back and the slogan: "The beatings will...

    SuSE goes free

The VC820 gave me too many problems, so the whole she-bang was moved onto a 440 BX board -- much better. This will also allow me to double the RAM.

    SuSE goes free

My father requested a computer for his garage. He has a nice system in his den, but would like something to play cards or surf the web with in the garage. So, after tinkering around with SuSE 10 for a few days, I figured that's the OS he gets in the garage. I'll couple SuSE 10 with a VC820...

    SuSE goes free

Thanks again Merc. The instructions work, although it is slightly different in reality than when he describes. Interestingly, Totem still doesn't work, but MPlayer does and I like the MPlayer UI. Some of the other packages that he recommends installing, such as Acroread and Realplayer are...

    SuSE goes free

So much for liking the GUI. I tried to watch a DVD, and it wouldn't work with Totem or Realplay 10. Something about x-nautilus-desktop not being available. So, I downloaded and installed the rpms for Ogle, that didn't work either. :arge:

    Quicktime (Mac vs. PC)

What, are you running Photoshop 6 on a Pentium 233MMX? PS closes quickly for me. Granted, it has a few jobs to end when closing (like cleaning up it's scratch disk and the pagefile), but I've never known it to be such a slug. After a quick comparison, it seems to close about as quickly as GIMP.

    SuSE goes free

I just installed Suse 10/Gnome and I really like the combination. I've even gone ahead and installed Opera, which was easier than I had expected. I just downloaded the rpm file, double-clicked, and YaST2 finished the rest. Nice. I like the Gnome GUI.

    Suits

Yup, Rochester . . . and you'll be working for the Mayo Clinic. There used to be another big employer there, WD, but they closed down their SCSI division and their technical support location. Must you wear a suit or can it be a combination? Let's say black dress slacks (wool combo) and nice...

    Performa 550 Data xfer

Quote two flat fees for this process, one would be for the in-home service and considerably more expensive.

    Performa 550 Data xfer

This is a tough one Merc. No modern connectors (USB, FireWire, Ethernet, Parallel), ADB, 1.44 FDD, and a 2x CD-ROM drive. It would almost seem that putting the SCSI drive into a newer Macintosh system would be best.

    Compressed air sale at OfficeMax

Good price mubs, thanks for the find. However, I recently purchased a nice cannister vacuum cleaner that has about 6 blowing attachments -- great for cleaning computers, and less expensive then the compressed air (in the long term).

What is a high temp for an AMD 1800+

For those CPUs, 60-65 at 100% CPU usuage with the retail HSF combo is typical. At idle, you should see it dip slightly below 60.

    Incredimail, spyware, and paranoia

Proof? Hmmm . . . I have a customer who is running the appropriate anti-virus/anti-spyware software. However, she was still being infected by spyware. I took her off Incredimail and the problem greatly diminished. She recognized this for herself and swore to never use the software again --...

Hot Deal: 4GB Corsair USB Flash Drive for $99 AR

WD has had their Passport Pocket drive out for a short time now. It's a USB interface with a 6 GB 1" drive inside (WDXMM60WPN). My disti carries them, but they don't seem to be moving. Something like $139.00 each. Six gigabytes for $139.00? Hoolie Doolie!

Sorry this took so long Splash . . . thanks for the explanation. I'm of the school that likes some of that riff-driven music from the 50's and 60's. Lately I've been playing songs from ELO -- glad I keep my albums around so I can always play them later in time.

I agree with Handy. Not only is it difficult to merge with the fast-paced speed of traffic, but during rush hour, all of our on ramps have signal lights -- effectively cutting the length of my acceleration lane to 1/3 or less! My car will do 0-60 in 12 seconds, and I'm always holding up...

    LCD vs DLP vs CRT

    Fan cabling in the case

Twist them tight, and they should look better. Cigarette lighter, or one of those longer BBQ lighters work great. They produce enough heat without having the flame touch the tubing. Just gently wave the flame back and forth under the tubing, turn it a bit so the other side gets heated as well.
