HTPC upgrade? New mobo + CPU + RAM only

To me that indicates that the fan is mainly preventing air from flowing the opposite direction. Try just blocking off that part of the case and see what happens.

    Identity Theft

This year I didn't get around to filing taxes until the last minute (waiting on docs from a refi). Afterwards I received a letter in the mail from the IRS asking me to call them while having the last two years returns and backup handy. After asking me many questions to confirm my identity, they...

Anyone else have a problem with web videos pausing their display?

The closest issues I've seen is the video window alone crashing or freezing, but only on the new Windows Server pre-releases. What happens when you disable hardware acceleration altogether?

They do. 7FPS is a bit slow. My understanding was that 30MP at >7fps would exceed the available bandwidth of CF cards.

Nvidia’s GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 revealed: Faster than Titan X at half the price

To get what (I think) you are after will require two things. 1. The monitor to support a "1:1" mode, where it doesn't try to stretch or scale the image to fill the screen. 2. A video card capable of displaying the resolution you want. Most will do this, but finding where in their driver to add...

NFC is for phones. Happy with the WiFi and 4k. 7FPS is a bit rough, but with 30MP and CF I understand that can't be helped.

    Audio Equipment

I'm a firm believer that the absolute top-end of audio gear is snake oil, but after using the line out from the Blue Yeti Mic for a while I put in a Schiit MODI 2 DAC and holy crap that is better.

    Recommendation for New Desktop PC

All the manufacturers seem to still think that SSDs are a premium item and price accordingly. You'd probably be better off buying one without, a separate SSD, and a drive cloning tool. But that is effort and complicates warranty work.

I do want to buy a used car

Other than that it weighs several tons ;) I've actually already reached out to the folks at EV West about the idea; basically gutting it and putting in ~1000hp.

The advantages of Waze tie directly to the density of active users in your area. Around here it is pretty awesome; nearly every accident, traffic jam, road closure, and police trap is updated rapidly.

I do want to buy a used car

Yup. Just a temp car until the Model 3 shows up. At that point either the wife will take it or I'll sell it on. I should sell my 2011 A3, but I'm tempted to make it a project car for a high performance EV conversion.

Now that I also posses a B8.5 A4-based vehicle, I figure a related question can go in here? I'm designing a custom phone mount with integrated wireless charging, which I'll have 3D printed out of matte black steel by shapeways. I want to mount the phone between the MMI screen and the main...

Nvidia’s GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 revealed: Faster than Titan X at half the price

Yup. You would probably want to be running an nVidia Quadro card, but the last one of those to be fanless was (IIRC) the NVS 295. That thing is old. I bet a lower-end latest-generation card could be modified to fanless-ness pretty easily (K1200 is only 45W), but that might be outside your...

I do want to buy a used car

Long drive up and back, but the new car is sitting in my driveway now. Couldn't get the price below $30k, but did get a full Audi warranty to 140k miles for the same price. First impressions: 1. I can't believe that even in a 2013 car the Bluetooth doesn't include multimedia support. Already...

Some critical security updates will still auto-install, regardless of what settings you use. The best practice is to not keep deferring updates; the computer will not auto-update/restart without you declining at least once.

I do want to buy a used car

If resolving the check engine light required anything less than a full engine tear-down I'd have done it and not be buying a car at all. I do want to buy a used car

The time has come for me to start considering a new car. Used Model S prices aren't low enough, and the Model 3 isn't due out for a while. As a temporary vehicle, I'll be negotiating for this one tomorrow and the next day. We'll see if they'll take my beater as a trade-in. If anyone wants to...

    Home networking question

Around here, unless you specify otherwise and pay a premium, the WAN port on your router gets assigned an address from a pool managed by your ISP via DHCP. Exactly the same as a DHCP pool on your local network. If this is the case for both of your internet connections than simply swapping the...

HTPC upgrade? New mobo + CPU + RAM only

One of the things I noticed with my 1080 (and Titan X for that matter) is that the back plate gets hot regardless of fan speed or even water cooling. I was able to get my temps significantly lower by mounting a large heatsink to the back of them and directing case airflow across. You may get...

Do either of your internet connections have a static IP? If they are both DHCP, I'd just have both WAN cables labeled and sitting next to "Buffalo Master". Plug the appropriate one in and leave the rest alone.

    Citibank really, really, really sucks!!!

BofA lets me set up auto pay with limits, I have mine set to not pay and alert me if: 1. More than one is attempted per month 2. The bill is more than 20% over the average for that bill. 3. The bill is over a hard limit I've set. Never had the issues ya'll talk about.

No electric version yet, probably 4 years out. But much less than 5000lbs and safer than most. Designing a car intelligently can lead to much better crash outcomes than just throwing weight at it. Clocker could probably contribute more on this.
