HTPC upgrade? New mobo + CPU + RAM only

I have on my desk right now an elgato Thunderbolt 2 Dock and a Corning 30m Thunderbolt 2 Optical Cable. Far from cheap, but cheaper than the bonkers dual-GPU + CPU + chipset watercooling rig I've been running to keep it quiet.

HTPC upgrade? New mobo + CPU + RAM only

I've been really happy with the build quality of Corsair cases so far, and I always swap the fans. Have you considered relocating the tower? It might be easier than designing it to be quiet. Up to now I've had the rack in the living room with a full water cooling rig, but am relocating it to...

    Laptops with large 1080P displays?

Looking for a laptop for use in a presentation space. Ideally it will have a large screen (something larger than 15.6") with 1080P native resolution, HDMI out, screencast support, and a large enough battery to run all day. I'll also be soliciting for a list of the software you'd install on a...

    Tesla doomed

This system does not exclude ride sharing. In my experience with buses in cities, they are either too full or too empty most of the time. This can be resolved by dynamically changing the size of vehicle and frequency of service based on real-time demand. The other challenge with scheduled...

    Tesla doomed

I wasn't arguing that shared transportation would die out, but that scheduled routes and vehicles seating 25+ would. An app similar to Uber connected to a serious database could offer the best of all the options, both in terms of cost and efficiency. 1. It knows where you are 2. You tell it...

Smartphone and plan advice (v. clean slate)

It would be difficult to get the waterproof rating with a removable back. The battery shown in the video I linked (no cable, just a fatter phone for a while, also waterproof) seems an acceptable alternative.

The availability of external batteries has reduced the importance of a replaceable battery, in my opinion. Granted, I swapped mine 3 times yesterday to keep things going, but I could have just as easily connected an external battery for a while. And the new note has a microSD slot...

A potential explanation for their behavior could look like this: 1. Better support and development is required to avoid all the bad press around security holes. 2. You can do better support on a product if you have fewer products; ideally one. 3. Getting people to move to your new product is...

Nvidia’s GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 revealed: Faster than Titan X at half the price

    1. SSDs are getting better at writes 2. With 2x 512GB, even if you use 40GB of cache the card can write balance for quite a while 3. For a $10k card killing SSDs from time to time isn't a significant cost

Nvidia’s GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 revealed: Faster than Titan X at half the price

Yup. At best in gaming I've seen 1.8x or so. Average is probably 1.5x. Combine that with games that won't run with an SLI setup at all (Eve Online and others), and it is a no-brainer.

    GTX1060 vs RX480

The only time I've felt the need is when they don't offer a card big enough. One Titan X wasn't enough, so I used two. One 1080 is totally enough, so I won't be bothering.

I'm pretty sure I'm done with SLI for these reasons. NVidia has made it clear that they are trying to get away from supporting multiple card setups as much as possible. There are those new card/vendor agnostic systems, but I don't see them being that big a thing either.

It is entirely possible that gas prices end up going down and staying down. All that is required is for demand to shrink a bit. EVs are still selling even though gas prices are low. The most difficult industry to substitute gas is aviation, IMO.

Do you maintain personal secure storage?

The poll wasn't for cold storage, it was for any storage. Folders with files that you don't want to lose. How do you store them, how do you maintain backups, what level of redundancy satisfies your paranoia, etc. IMO, cold storage is not reliable enough to be counted in most redundancy...

Do not want a hybrid. The added complexity and weight of two different propulsion systems in a car causes an allergic reaction in me. Also, the performance of the Volt seems pretty lame. Do you maintain personal secure storage?

This poll was inspired by snowhiker asking about the cold-storage / shelf-life of data on SSDs. I'm of the impression that any kind of cold-storage is too much of a risk for data you care about. There are many levels of redundancy that can be taken, but I'd imagine most here at least have a...
