Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

This is my experience with Lenovo as well, even if you order a preconfigured system, they only include usable trays for the drives you ordered. The LA company I now order servers through fill the thing with useful trays no charge (after I asked).

    High-performance SSDs for Desktop use

Ah there was the confusion. Sorry about that. I have another Samsung with the OS currently installed. The current plan is to use both Samsungs as cache for the Storage Space and put the OS on the Intel NVMe. Just need to confirm that Creative Cloud and SolidWorks 2016 will run on the Server...

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

I wouldn't be surprised if some BIOS default only allows storage adapters in any expansion slots? Does the system depend on a CPU-based GPU? Does the CPU you put in have on-board video? I don't think I tried a VGA adapter, but I can check it out Monday.

Not sure on that one. I just plugged in the Dell 24" I have on the stand (direct via DP) and it just worked (after an age of pre-post whirring and whatnot). IIRC, it may have taken 5+ minutes to get video the first time?

If you could choose between these two for your OS drive: Samsung SM951 512GB Intel 750 PCIe 400GB At the moment I have the OS installed on an SM951, with a second as the local data drive (good for separating source and destination on batch operations). With all the storage going local, I'm...

Finally got the SSD I'm going to try as the cache for the Storage Space. As mentioned above, it looks like that kind of space can only be set up in a server OS. question I need a CMS for company internal documents and procedures: Recommendations?

Another mass build and some hardware thoughts

Very similar to the build I recently did for my kid, only I used a different board and an M.2 SSD to clean up the cabling. That CPU is really quick for simple stuff.

I'll second this. I thought the no-brainer S.O.P. was shoot in RAW and make as many of your adjustments (especially exposure/balance/channel stuff) before discarding that data by converting to something else (even TIFF or Photoshop, much less JPG). Am I missing something?

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

I would doubt that number. An RD650 at 10% load and a 68F ambient is double that.

How do I fix ALL of these file names ?

I managed this just for Artist, Title, and Album for 63k songs then used Mp3tag years ago. Make sure your ID3 tagging tool supports quick batching for album and artist.

Another mass build and some hardware thoughts

Yup. If the machine is projected to have a long life consider upping the capacity of SSD. This will fend off OS growth and balance writes across more cells.

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

After the drives are physically installed, it takes about 90 seconds to set up an array. Then (depending on RAID level and controller), waiting several hours for the array to build the first time. Really not hard at all.

Microsoft Storage Spaces vs. RAID Level

RD650 is a nice unit. The management was an extra, and the DP only would be a pain but I've done without KVM for a few years now (monitor, keyboard, mouse, tools on a stand-hotplug as needed). The 650 does come with an onboard NIC, but unless it is 10GbE it will never be enough these days.

    Basement water cooling

I'd just use a kill-a-watt at the wall and consider that a safe figure. Or (what I normally do), get something that is certainly overkill and don't worry about it.

Oh, and a warning. I really like the Koolance stuff, but check here before you order; every part is a distinct P/N that needs to be spec'd separately. In fact, I have quite a few fittings and misc that I'd send your way were you interested in doing this.

    Basement water cooling

Yup, I have a similar system (into my garage) for the summer. I use Koolance Quick Disconnects to allow me to move the rad inside in the winter. Part of my redesign would be to keep the hard-plumbed loop in place and leave the pump outside all the time. Just relocate the rad for winter. Also...

Thank you for finding that one, allow me to whine about the lack of modular cables ;) Efficiency is one of the boxes that I tick when I build a system, it would be nice to not have to install a 550W PSU and run it at 15% load most of the time just to claim efficiency. These systems aren't...

Seasonic Announce New Prime Series PSU's

Sounds good to me. I'd really like to see an 80Plus Titanium in the 300W range. Efficiency peaks at about 50% of rated capacity, and that would make it ideal for normal builds.
