    Goodbye Firefox

Not at all. I'd completely forgotten that anyone had posted anything earlier. I should just stop today, it is only going downhill and I'm already underground.

The useful bit from there (I only read at 5) was a link to the "Classic Theme Restorer", which Tannin should like eventually.

    Goodbye Firefox

Tannin, of all the tech people I know, you must be the one who likes change the least. Last I checked you hated Firefox altogether, claiming that the older browser (Opera was it?) was superior. Only after another change are you saying that the last Firefox was good? I barely noticed the change...

I love the game, and the new Alpha 20 (released today) looks to help gameplay a lot. I just run it in a 2160x1600 window ;)

Hehe. No time for gaming lately, though CivV looks awesome @ 4k. Prison Architect fails with an error that says (I'm not making this up) "Unreasonable Resolution".

    TVs and things

With a kid in the house "indestructable" certainly factors more strongly into "better". And everything needs to be some level of disposable; the nice office chairs for the house have been put on hold for at least 5 years.

    Advertising, good or bad?

I'm very much a freedom-of-speech type myself, and wouldn't propose any kind of legislation that stops people (or corps, who are not people) from compensating a media outlet to pass on their message. I just wish that people weren't so easily swayed by ads, instead choosing to be informed and...

    Advertising, good or bad?

My final argument was as follows: If people were just a bit smarter and able to extract the facts from their surroundings they would likely make decisions based on their own best interests with little regard for irrelevancies. This little dream of mine would be capable of reducing the...

    Advertising, good or bad?

I was having a discussion with other people at another place, and I made a statement that I thought everyone would agree on. The response was quite the opposite, with everyone else stating that they were stunned at my opinion and refusing to discuss further. "Advertisements being effective is...

    TVs and things

The house is still under construction. I have the plans around here somewhere, but the home theater room isn't conducive to projection systems. 80" would be the minimum size, 110" probably ideal if the price works (under $15k?). I don't need to make a decision on what TV yet, but the framing is...

    TVs and things

I don't mean to derail, but a client will have a need for a 4k 80"+ in a few months. I don't need model recommendations or price, but do you see similar evolution in the tech of these larger units?

"The inevitable arrival of subscription-based Windows"

Adding features adds complexity to the UI. I won't say that there isn't a better UI for graphics editing programs than Photoshop, but I haven't seen one. GIMP is a complete joke.

"The inevitable arrival of subscription-based Windows"

Not that it really matters, Linux has already stood on principle too long. It will now stand on the sidelines with Unix and BSD while Android takes over the market it could have had years ago.

"The inevitable arrival of subscription-based Windows"

Exact duplication wouldn't be necessary. Simply getting close enough that everything isn't a youtube video away would be nice. An alternative would be some kind of standardization across distros, so that someone with a basic level of knowledge can say on their resume that they "know Linux" in...

On the tested podcast a few weeks ago Adam Savage said that Ferris Bueller could be seen as Tyler Durden to Cameron Frye's Edward Norton, and that the whole thing happens because Cameron doesn't have the balls to ask Sloane out.

    Harddrrive reliability

Fortunately most higher-end NAS units support versioning, so even if something unfortunate happens you have the previous copies to step through. In my case I've set it to keep the most recent 8 versions, one from every day this week, one from last week, one from last month, and one from last year.

It certainly makes it easier ;) When I worked from home I talked a friend down the street into running a NAS unit for me as a backup. As compensation, I set up a point-to-point wireless link between our houses and let him share my 100MB internet connection.

Streaming live camera video to a large audience?

I appreciate the tip. I was hoping to get the video onto YouTube as a live stream, and Wowza seems to have issues with that from an AXIS camera. Getting Wowza, setting it up on an AWS instance, and then distributing the link can be done, but I'm going to search a bit more for an easier way.

Streaming live camera video to a large audience?

One of my clients operates a horse stable. We are coming into foaling season, and last year I set up an IP security camera so she could keep an eye out. It was just a simple AXIS IP security camera with audio and I gave her the IP address. Some of her friends voiced interest in seeing the video...

This is clearly impossible. Ivy Bridge-EP (Xeon E5) specifications leaked

Sorry to hear about your day. I've had the AC units fail in server rooms a couple times. This is why I spec them to be significantly larger than strictly necessary to hold the server racks, and I try to store additional equipment (workstations, servers, phones, whatever) in the same space as...

I want to buy a new car

I do drive stick, and know how to heel-and-toe, etc. But in my opinion it is a hindrance and gets in the way of what I like about driving. Focusing on weight transfer and line is plenty to keep you occupied without trying to do something that the car does so much better than a human ever could...

I want to buy a new car

I hadn't done the research, but that was basically the logic I was following. No combustion appliances in the building, seal it up as much as possible, make sure that all the volume in the building (including walls and attic) have a permeable exit for moisture.

    Harddrrive reliability

I feel pretty strongly that in order to be confident about a backup set those drives should be running always and have a mechanism for verifying their integrity as well as redundancy among the drives. Bare minimum is a 2-drive NAS unit in RAID-1 with checksums documented. To protect from as many...

I want to buy a new car

Along with sealing up the space I'll be putting in an air-air heat exchanger at some point. For now I just make sure that air is circulated between the rooms at night and some windows are open during the day (currently 65F). Edit: A brick planter (sound fence) is on the plans for the front...

I want to buy a new car

All ductwork is in the attic and is already fully insulated. I spec'ed that when they were doing the install. As far as energy efficiency goes, the only thing I'm missing is the hot water recirculation, but I don't want to put that in until we've moved the bathrooms to their final locations.

I want to buy a new car

The acoustics is at least 50% of the motivation for this project. The weather here is mild and our heat pump ultra efficient, so financially there isn't much incentive for more insulation. However, we live on a road with some traffic on it, and the master bedroom is at the front of the house. It...

I don't have any need for more storage at the moment. The (4x) 8x4TB arrays I built some years ago is plenty for my home and work needs at this point. I now have them all set to store a complete copy of everything (work and home) and they are located at 3 different sites in two different...

Fortunately the tanks actually packed tightly enough that they didn't shift at all.
