Your home Stereo/sound system/s? What did you buy, how much, and why did you buy it?

One advantage of network-connected AV gear is that it can update it's own firmware over the internet. My new toy at home (Denon AVR-3313CI) had an update already. Of course, this might just give the manufacturer an out and allow them to ship incomplete firmware, but on a device that streams...

They do. My main complaint with them is that it takes as long to establish a DC connection using Verizon's service as it does to connect a regular phone call. Nextel's service is near immediate. You can tell by the sound effect that each service uses to disguise the connection lag. It looks...

    Motorola Admiral on Sprint

This is a free 2-week trial, part of the company's evaluation of Sprint phones and their direct connect technology. We've been on Nextel, but now that they are pulling the plug we need to evaluate other options. I just don't know how Sprint can call this their flagship phone and keep a straight...

    Motorola Admiral on Sprint

Just got one of these to test. What a piece of crap. Andoid 2.3.5 should not be the newest OS for any "current" phone. Much less the "top-of-the-line" with direct connect. It is, however, a step up from the 1.5 on my old phone. It even says it has 3G, though the performance over such isn't...

Kicking up dust wouldn't worry me as much as sand or the like being sucked in and launched at the car. My technique was always a fast lap around the block; the leaf blower sounds more legal. I suspect that a shop vac in reverse would be able to use the filter to prevent particulates from...

Interesting. On the page that you (and I) linked, it shows this unit being of the "Smart-UPS" category, and directly below it is the "Smart-UPS On-Line" category.

10-4. At the moment the best silent UPS I have is an APC SMX1000, which is not line-interactive. I actually have a fairly monstrous power conditioner in front of it, so it likely doesn't matter that much.

Grr...won't be able to use it here, even in the rack with the door closed it is by far the noisiest thing. I don't mind if the fan kicks on while the power is out, or even during particularly heavy load, but this won't do. Does the fan turn off with any of the "on-line/interactive" units from...

Just switched to a Liebert/Emerson GXT3 2kV for the house. The fan is super-loud at the moment, I'm hoping that the fan actually stops when the batteries are charged and the system is running at a relatively low load (~450VA)?

Mine was pretty bad to start with. Step one was add a lot of light (nearly 500w of 6500k 98CRI florescent for a 2 car garage). Once you see what you have you cans start fixing it. That wall already had sheet rock on it (it is the firewall to the house) so mudding and painting was a 4 day job...

In general I've noticed the same thing. Every time I add a car to an existing policy they try to screw me. This list currently includes Allstate and Geico, though I suspect my current carrier (AAA) would be no different. Whenever I get a new car I switch carriers.

question How to effectively delete data from magnetic media? I mean professional way.

I use Dewalt, preferring their titanium bits. The smaller bits do the job faster, but break more easily. I use the 1/4" most of the time. Good compromise between strength and speed.

SSDs - State of the Product?

They are very on top of SSD stuff. That you would disregard everything Anand says shows an insufficient level of cynicism. I don't believe there is a single tech author out there that hasn't dreamed of being bought out by somebody. At least the bigger names have more eyes on them, and really...

question How to effectively delete data from magnetic media? I mean professional way.

Indeed. This is the quickest way I've found. Keep in mind that, in theory, the platters could be removed, scanned while laying flat on a table, and some of the data might be recovered. At a cost of at least $10k per disk. But if you need more of a "sure thing", nothing short of shredding or...

Yup. You plug it into your router/hub/switch like another computer. You then connect to it and configure it using some software that goes on your computer. A full new router or just a wireless access point? The most cost effective solution would be to leave your current router running as-is, possibly disabling the wireless, and put in a dedicated AP. This one is my favorite, and I guarantee it is more powerful, capable, and cheaper than a new...
