    HP Probook

That is a great way to remove a service a particular machine doesn't need. Don't remove it, or even disable it, just remove some of the files and let it time out on every startup. That is simply awful.

Increased SSD Performance with relaxed retention...

I've been of the opinion for quite some time that offline/unmonitored storage of any kind isn't really safe at all. For me a backup is another machine at another location on another RAID array with SMART support and monitoring/email reporting. For me to guarantee someone's data it must be on...

For reference, download the ISO yourself first. I had a high failure rate of the files if I let the app do the download, but it worked fine with images I'd gotten independently.

But of course the problem with a background refresh is that if the drive is powered off and stored it won't have the chance. At the moment it would be crazy to use SSDs to archive data long term, but people are crazy.

Increased SSD Performance with relaxed retention...

I don't see this as a loss of long-term reliability. So long as the drive is still able to accept writes and perform reads the drive isn't broken. It just means a change in usage/perception. SSDs weren't for archive storage anyway; that would be nuts.

    Something Random

Quite. Running the engine above ~3500RPM in traffic is uncivilized, particularly when ~2250 is all you need to pull away from the unsuspecting suburban. Massive torque at low RPM is why I'll be adopting electric earlier than most. Any engine that requires multiple tiers of guard rail is...

Increased SSD Performance with relaxed retention...

Very interesting. I wonder if the new general purpose SSDs will be going this route, with the controller being required to "stir the pot" every once in a while if data has in fact not been altered for a month or so.

How to deal with wind chill?

I am 6'3". Now considerably more in shape and only 200lbs (it ballooned to nearly 250lbs before I got it under control). Mostly in the legs, though. I know a number of people who are taller/bigger than I. Two of them are 6'6"+ and 250-280lbs in decent shape.

Yup, normal heatsinks fit just fine. The BIOS for that board is not as straightforward as I would like; I still haven't found the XMP memory profile setting location, though I haven't looked that hard. No OC'ing yet, either. I hope to get a Linux install going tomorrow, then get some F@H action ;)

    Low powered computer thread

I have a fundamental objection to filters of any kind, mainly that nobody I support ever cleans them. Not one, even the people with particular need, even when I take the time during installation to point out where they are, how to clean them, and how often it should happen. Due to this, and...

How to deal with wind chill?

I spent a winter in Boston and New York, and a month at altitude in the Himalayas. I've also been punched really hard by someone bigger than I. I know real cold, but that doesn't mean anything less than that (being punched really hard by someone my size) doesn't suck.

80 Plus Platinum power supplies are still 90% efficient at 20% load. I do wish there were more efficient PSUs at the lower ratings (SeaSonic only offers Platinum ratings at 860w and 1000w), but I don't think the gap either way would be that significant. I would suspect idle draw to be closer to...

No beer, but one of the couches is nice. The projector is down, but the guest suite has a 42" LED-LCD. Bring the cat ;) This place will be much warmer once we have a heater installed, but even now I just turn on some more of the 75w halogen cans to make it nice and toasty.

Exactly. But if this car is able to perform as advertised, mainly keeping up with cars that have twice the power, than it will indeed be sipping gas.

Revodrives? What would work with my setup?

I suppose I should clarify on that 64GB system. My dad is a developer, and regularly has an entire ecosystem of VMs running in the background on the same machine he is coding on. That is why he likes (not needs) 25% of his entire disk capacity as RAM.
