Where can I find a really tiny 100-240VAC adapter to 16-18VDC @ 500mA? It must be a switching adapter to be small and lightweight. All I can find are bulky wall warts or some notebook inline bricks, but even the smallest ones are usually 3A, making them larger and heavier than necessary...

That is exactly how I feel. Yet my one small drive, a 36GB 15K.3, is only partitioned as a 9.5 GB drive. The rest is truly free. ;)

The OS is Win2K, and it was patched not too long after obtaining the 160GB D540X - maybe late 2001 or early 2002.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I only planned to use WIPE on the first part of the drive. Of course the entire drive could be wiped in Windows if I thought it would run that long. ;)

I must be licky; my P4C800E-Deluxe from November 2003 is still working perfectly fine. I started with only 4x512 MB Crucial RAM of some sort then upgraded to 4x1GB PC3200 CrossAir in March 2004. I am not planning to upgrade that soon, so I hope it lasts another 4-6 months.

Nero supports multiple drives, so why not just make two copies from the source files? It seems to me that a backup would be slow and more time consuming, both reading and writing.

The write test was done first of course. Neither the write test nor read test would be affected in this case, since the files were written by Nero to fill up the disc.

Yeah, the bust speed is 27MB/sec. Is this just due to the old NEC 3500A or do the newer ones read faster? The 8x DVD±RW (DL) in my notebooko is about the same speed too, ~3.4 x avergae read.

Well, this DVD+R DL totally f***ing sucks as far as I am concerned. It is too costly and nobody wants to wait 30 minutes to download a single disc. :cry:

I finally obtained some DVD+R DL discs and burned them in the old NEC 35000A. The writing speed is 4x throughout, but the read speed is terrible. Are all DL discs slow to read? I though that read speeds were always equal to or faster than writing speeds. Is this a faulty generalization, or...

I guess it depends on the situation. It is not possible to install or execute any unapproved software on any of our systems at work. Not only would the IT people be pissed off, they could have your ass for trying to hack the system. :)

I am using an old notebook for printing. It doesn't need to be a fast boot drive, just one that can spool big print files fast. I am tired of waiting 3 minutes for a print job to start, while listening to all that seeking. :(

I am deparely seeking a reverse adapter to connect a 3.5" IDe drove to a notebok with teh standard 44-pin 2.5' connector. There are a gazillion $4 adaoetrs to connetc 2.5" drives to 40-pin cables, but not the revers. Is there any hope? TIA
