I just can't imagine him asking us about SSD's. Knowing him, he'd have his entire company on SCSI SSD's LONG ago for boot drives..

Just got done looking at the benchmarks. Looks like a wash, and I don't really think any human could tell the difference...

As you can see, it's cheaper to buy the next fastest cpu and a normal cooler. On the other hand, even that one may not get over 4 ghz. There is something to be said for a 25% processor boost, and, overclocking. Intel seems to be stuck at 2.8-3.2 ghz, and, I kind of wonder why that is?

The Extreme edition processors have one very endearing characteristic: They are able to be overclocked, without having to alter other bios settings. Is that feature worth a bunch more money? Don't know. It would mean another grand for a cpu, or 700 if I can find one used, and, another 400...

LiamC: I had a bunch of stuff that was just too many bandaids. A supermicro, 10 year old motherboard, USB 2 Plextor Bluray writer/player, AGP 4670, all running on XP Pro. Same player works fine on The Beast.

I DID build two middle area Athlon 3200+ computers in about 2006-7. That was the right price for what I was doing at the time, about 200 for the processors. Those passmark at about HALF the speed of the dual Xeons. The other components were not nearly as quick, either. Enterprise hardware does...

It overclocks itself, with no setting changes, to 3.11 ghz. Haven't noticed it go any higher yet, but I suppose it's possible. That's consistent with the Passmark numbers. It runs a little faster then a 950, but, .9ghz slower then the 960 or 965. Pretty amazing. Intel has a cute little gadget...

In going over to SSD's, I've noticed that it's much more like having everything in RAM. In other words, windows paging, program paging, anything that would normally be stored on a hard drive, happens at what we preceive as nearly RAM speed. Programs that normally take awhile to load, like...

I assume in two you are using AnyDVDHD to do the ripping to iso? Your Bluray times are WAY off the charts. MAYBE it should be around 45 minutes, and that's usually doing two at a time. I still use RipIt4Me, and Dvd Decrypter, and DVD shrink, and it works on almost all my DVD's. The Beast...

I'm kind of wondering about SSD's and laptops. Is there a different set of connectors for laptop SATA drives vs. the standard SATA drives? If so, who makes laptop SSD's, and, has anyone used them? I can't just plug a Vertex Turbo into a Lenova?

Mercutio's i7 920 is running nearly 25% faster then the 975. I guess that's about the best bang for the buck setup you could ever want, short of dual processors, and an enterprise class motherboard...

Would you run passmark on it? That should be fun...

It also appears 3.2 ghz is about as fast as you are going to get a 920 to run. That should put it at about 6700 passmark, or, 1000 points faster then your current setup. What, 14% improvement?

I did too. You already have a very fast setup. 4559 at 3.0 ghz on Passmark, plus, you have a 25% overclock. That should put it at around 5700, or so. An i975 is going to run around 7000, or you could go with a 1550 dollar 5590 Xeon. That would get you 7200. It appears that the way to go is the...

My favorite cpu coolers were made by SwiftTech. Sadly they haven't made any for the newer cpus, and have only water cooling stuff for current cpus.

My limiting factor is how much bandwidth the server is using for up/down loading stuff. Otherwise, I'd REALLY like to know what you do that even makes your system break a sweat. If I was sensible, and didn't have wonderful friends, I'd have pretty much your current system, and would be happy...
