I don't think so. I mean, the Intel guys must know what they are doing. The chip and the board are rated to 100C+, so I guess we'll find out.

Unless it's an Extreme processor, OCing is going to require putting something other then the cpu out of spec. 3.51Ghz is a pretty serious overclock. I'm not surprised it screwed with the drives, and ram.
Also, the ram used in these non-enterprise motherboards seems to be less quality controlled then that used in servers, and, when you start getting up around 8 gigs, or more, seems like stuff starts happening.
IIRC the ram in the Beast is rated for 1333, but, only runs stable at 1066MHZ. 12 gigs, 1066 MHz is not really noticeable vs 1333 MHz when it was running.
But, you all know that.

Interestingly enough, my new rig is running the CPU at 41C using a cheap-ish ZeroTherm cooler. I also have some Zalman CNPS9900NT coolers here that I might play with.

3 1/2 months on, I'm getting 7.4/7.6 for CPU/Memory with an i5 2400 at default settings. AMD 6850 graphics is hitting 7.7/7.7. Only a 120GB Sandforce is letting down the side with a meager 5.9.

That's the score I get with mecanical hard drives (not Raptor, plain WD Caviar Blue and vanilla Seagate 7.2K rpm). What's wrong with the scoring?

Spiffy onboard audio and networking gear. And the ability to go triple crossfire. The one that supports quad crossfire costs another $100.
Neat...do you think either of them are worth the money? I know your clients are rockin' the bill...just curious if you think they're worth it. I'm surprised they didn't swing for the 980X or 990X since they're going over the top anyway. Given the $10 price difference I don't know why anyone would buy the 980 over the 990 when you're already spending a truck load of cash like that.

I think if I could wait, I'd go for for the triple-channel Sandy Bridge motherboards with the hex-core sandy bridge i7 processors. It won't be any cheaper, but it will undoubtedly out perform the best of the current generation i7's by quite a ways.

Yes, but we really are talking 1-2 months till they are expected which isn't a long time. They were supposed to be out in March of 2011 but I anticipate that because of the problem with the Sandy Bridge chipsets they will be delayed a little longer. I think it would be worth the wait...

Are the socket 2011 chips going to be quad-channel?
The Xeon E-5's might be, and they share a 2011-pin socket (probably tilted at 90 degrees from the consumer version like the current generation). Intel's demoing with 8 GB of RAM, which isn't a triple channel number...

The user plans to run 3 30" 2560x1440 monitors. What video card would you recommend? Here is the rest of the system:

Wow, more than 1/4 of the price is for that RevoDrive 3. Looks like a nice machine. I also hope Ivy Bridge has some hex-core CPUs to offer in Q1 2012. Have you had any prior experience with those 3TB Hitachi drives? My 1TB Samsung drives are near capacity and I'm looking to add some more drives to my desktop. Those are the ones on my list.

Those X2-6870 cards represent a nice value in the high-end segment. Will he be gaming in that system? If it's for CAD, then he'll need a bad-ass Quadro (like a Quadro 4000).
Of course, no graphic card or probably even no combination of graphic cards will be able to play games like Crysis 2 or Metro 2033 on 3x 2560x1440 screens. 1x 2560x1440 is already tough enough.
