NFC is for phones. Happy with the WiFi and 4k. 7FPS is a bit rough, but with 30MP and CF I understand that can't be helped.

I thought phones had the BlueTooths and Wi-Fi also. You can go slower than 7FPS if it is too fast. :) CF or SD or any memory card is unrelated to the mirror/shutter cycle speed.

They do. 7FPS is a bit slow. My understanding was that 30MP at >7fps would exceed the available bandwidth of CF cards.

All you whippersnappers are spoiled with that nonsense on the interwebs. :D
When in the history of the world has there been a mid-sized SLR capable of 7FPS or more without an external motor or battery grip? ;)
Of course it can be done with enough battery power and additional costs. The shutter, mirror box, sensor, electronics, etc. need to be designed for the higher speeds.

The camera is just like a computer in that the data is processed in RAM first and then written to the cards. Of course the CPU, etc. are still operating while files are being written.
I can put an old 133x memory card in a 1DX and still achieve maximum framing rate until the buffer is full, but then it will takes ages to clear.

"Back in the day," and additional MOTOR DRIVE for you camera gave you 3.5 fps. And that was bad-ass. The 6 fps you got with a Nikon F3 and MD4 motor drive was crazy insane. I thought the 2 fps "auto winder" on my brothers Minolta was awesome.

The 5D4 specs don't "WOW" me much. The extra MP is nice but if there are no DR and noise improvements would a 5D3 owner really need to upgrade?

Probably not. I never really liked the 5D III, so anything would most likely be an improvement. For me the main concern is improved AF at f/5.6, higher framing rate and of course the 30 MP.
Low ISO DR should be very good, but high ISO noise will about what one would expect. On a per image (not per pixel) basis noise is consistent between a range of cameras so there is no free lunch.

The big question is if there will be a good deal on the 24-105 II with the 5D IV as a kit. Unfortunately we don't know if the lens will be any good. The estimated price is rather low at $1100, so the lens may be just a somewhat better version of mediocre. I could really use the lens next week, but would not need the body until the next jungle event in early 2017.

More linky gremlins for Lunar. ^^^^^ That link above launches a reply W/quote for message 3474?!?

NVS2801 here.

The new Nexto is available now for order. Since the 5D IV does not have cards I don't need it. In my mind that makes the camera $900 cheaper.

Possibly horrible specs for 5D4. If they turn out to be true.

- anti-alias filter.
- SD slot is UHS-1 only.
- 21 frame buffer when shooting RAW to CF slot.
- 19 frame buffer when shooting RAW to SD slot.
- 7 frame buffer when shooting dual pixel RAW (possibly interesting feature).

Bump the resolution up, then hamper it with an OLPF?!? Buffer also seems tiny for a $3500 camera and when compared to the 1Dx, D5, D500. I know the 5D4 isn't a sports/action/PJ camera but wouldn't a wedding shooter want a little more buffer? Come on Canon. Do you really think someone will buy a 5D4, INSTEAD of a 1Dx if the buffer was 40-50 frames deep? 21 seems crippling.

I estimate throughput is ~90 frames in the first 30 seconds, about the same as the 5D III. That's plenty for event photography and weddings. :)

Isn't the buffer of the mark iii 15-18 RAWs (give or take depending on the CF card)??? So the mark iv is only a tiny bit better? Seems the buffer was increased just enough to keep up with the jump from 6 to 7 fps. You'd think Canon would increase the buffer more than 20% over a 4 yo camera even if it's "not needed" just to tick a feature box.

And the SD slot that everybody complains about being slow is still not as fast as it could be? Another head scratcher.

Buffer aside, I think the big WTF is the OLPF. 5DSr, D810, K1, Sony, etc don't have these filters anymore and with the nice bump is resolution the mark iv give you why cripple it with such a filter?

Other than maybe some Leicas I don't know any FF bodies at 24MP or less that don't have an AA filter. The 24MP Sony a7 II has one, but the 36MP a7R and 42MP a7RII don't. 30MP is in a transition zone. Canon has marketed the 5D series to pros, and sharp lenses at wider apertures produce moiré that can be a hassle to overcome. I'd prefer a weak AA filter.

Well, if it's a turd Canon will have to cut the price or revel in low sales if it really misses the mark. I don't really see the issue.

Yes. There is no issue yet, as the camera is not even for sale.
I'd expect it to be about $500 less within 6 months, depending on exchange rates.

Canon indicated the specific areas targeted for improvement based on market response to the 5D III.
Increased resolution, better AF including f/8, faster framing rate than any other FF mid-sized body configuration, improved DR, DP AF, DP RAW, wireless connectivity, etc. are not to be sneezed at.
Regardless, the 5D III is such a workhorse that many pros are not planning to upgrade soon.

What Canon needs is some better consumer FF bodies, i.e., an update to the 6D.
It would be nice if the 5DsR were updated with a better sensor, but that is not likely for a while.

What's a near year delay between friends?

It's not unusual to wait a year for a Nikkor lens, but a P/S camera?
Maybe Nikon wised up and realized nobody wants such a camera without a viewfinder.

There could be technical problems or perhaps it's not economical. Aren't you waiting for the D750 replacement?

My low funds preclude me from upgrading my D610 anytime is the near future. Perhaps in 2017/18 I'll pickup the camera that replaces the D810.

Yep. They realized everyone hates taking photos with their cell phones due to the lack of a viewfinder. They're eliminating their mirrorless cameras too.

My point is that they should have a EVF like Sony.
In 20 years there may be no Nikon, but let's enjoy what they have for now.

Well this is interesting and welcomed.

Tamron's updated, 150-600mm f/5-6.3 (G2) includes a tripod collar that is Arca-Swiss compatible. Revolutionary!!! Do the Canon big white's or Nikon's big blacks have A-S collars?!?

Does Canikon not include A-S collars on their big teles because buyers will assume they suck and want to upgrade anyways?

That is the first OEM A-S foot I recall. It's a significant value to buyers of the lower-priced lenses and can reduce weight. Generally I prefer the 4th gen feet for the ultra-low profile or some Kirk feet that are also reasonably low profile. The Tamron tripod mount foot seems rather tall. :(

Lensrentals’ Canon 5D Mk IV Teardown.

Quote from article; "From underneath, it looks pretty much like every other top assembly, and we’ve learned from long, painful experience not to take these apart unless we absolutely need to."

If even the experts at lensrentals don't like to take apart certain sub-assemblies you know they must be complicated and a pain-in-the-ass to reassemble. DSLRs are incredibly intricate and complex pieces of hardware. Perhaps the most complex consumer electronic device out there.

It definitely looks like a complicated piece of electronics to assemble and maintain. I get the vibe that most aren't too thrilled with the offering. The video/film enthusiasts seem to dislike many points that are offered in that area of the camera when it comes to 4K DCI video. The camera seems limited to 8-bit 4:2:2, lack of high dynamic range log mode, and lacks the ability to display 4K HDMI output for monitor/preview. The 1.7 crop mode on the sensor is arguably understandable because Canon is in a situation where they need to figure out how to present a 4K video (8.8Mpixel) out of a 30Mpixel sensor in high quality.

I don't know about the videos, but I can test the camera a bit tonight with teles. Given the cost of lighting and sound, talent, etc. SLRs don't seem to be the best tools now.

I'm liking the 5D IV more than expected. :) Overall it is far better than the 5D III.

The low-medium ISO IQ is really good with clean shadows and high ISO is very good as well. The noise is uniform and well amenable to NR. Removal of high ISO color noise results in images that look more like those from the 1DX than the 5D III if you know what I mean.

AF is fast and seems fine, but I'll need to take it to the reserve to test tracking. I'm expecting performance somewhere between the 5DsR and 1DX II.

7FPS in a lightweight FF body is nice, but the buffer could be larger. Terminal throughput is a decent 3FPS, so Canon must have pushed the UDMA 7 cards to the limit.

I'll mostly be using the 5D IV for high action and/or between 800-3200 ISO. The 30 MP provides a lot more reach than the 18-20 MP of the 1DX or 1DX II.
Obviously the 5DsR is still king of the Canon FF IQ at low ISO. They make a good pair.

^^^ <cough> didn't I mention the small buffer of the 5D4 <cough>

Thanks for the report on the new Canon Lunar. Seems the 5D4 is on-par with the Nikon D810 now, especially with the boosted DR. A bit lower res but a bit faster. Perfect for wedding shooters.

Some interesting lenses from Sigma.

12-24mm is a nice range with a "budget" aperture of f/4. Probably better IQ than the 16-35mm f/4 Nikkor to boot. Wish Nikon would update their 14-24mm lens as it's 9 years old now. Seems everybody on the various photog forums has been eagerly awaiting the 85mm f/1.4 ART. The 500mm f/4 looks interesting but probably $6000+ if anywhere close in IQ as the big boy Nikkor 500/4.
