Arrow Lake is official and all that the leakers said over the last couple days ago seems to have held true: They're a little slower and a lot cooler. Doesn't look like mainstream desktop prices have been changed from last gen. The Ultra 9 285 is just under $600 and the two Ultra 5s are ~$300.
It definitely feels wrong to see an entire CPU generation with zero effective performance gains though.

Anyone else want to build an HEDT with the EPYC 9575F? Sure it is a $12k chip that draws 400W just on it's own, but....

64 cores clocking to 5Ghz
12 Channels of DDR5-6400 supporting ECC
256MB L3 Cache
All the connectivity you'd ever want

Outside my personal price range, but I will be looking for a customer as I want to play.

The 9575F looks amazing.

But I will dream sweet dreams about a 9175F in SQL Server tonight, 16 cores @ 4.2 - 5 GHz and 512 MB L3... :)

Just remember fb, you gotta license all those SQL Server instances. That's US$130,000 if you're running SQL Server Enterprise edition on 16 cores on-prem.

I'm currently on Zen 2 (3950X) so I'm assuming it'll be a nice bump.
Holy crap, anything will blow away that CPU. It was a dog on the low thread counts.

Surely there will be some room for overcorking if it is not using so much power at the base condition.

I know, it makes the HW price almost irrelevant. =) And if you license all physical cores with EE you can run as many VM:s as you want with EE on that machine. So you can potentially cram a bit more out of it, vs Standard Edition where you have to license every core in every VM.

But I'm also happy to see the return of 8 cores even if the specs are not that impressive. It would be enough for my workloads and I would choose 8 cores Enterprise Edition on bare metal with maxed out RAM over a 16 or 24 cores Stranded Edition any day of the week.

The single-threaded Arrowlake performance looks really good (though n=1), the first CPU to make sense after the 14th gen debacle and the very weak Zen 5 gains. However, I suspect there will not be motherbords that I will find useful.

Holy crap, anything will blow away that CPU. It was a dog on the low thread counts.

Bear in mind that at the time that it came out, it was completely fine in single-thread performance. It competed well against the contemporary Intel competitor. We're just a bit under five years on from when that happened, is all. You're treating it like it's a Core 2 Quad or something, Lunar. :p I for one would still be glad to have a 3950X, for my server or what-have-you, it's just that what I have right now suits my needs.

I really hope the rumors I'd heard about Qualcomm eyeing up Intel for acquisition are incorrect, especially as Arrowlake seems to be underwhelming for people looking for pure performance gains. I don't think they'll sell particularly well over 14th gen, much less the Ryzen 9000 series if they don't start cutting prices, but I'm also not sure how much they can really afford to cut prices at the moment, with their reportedly dire situation. It's not a great sign when your CEO is quoting bible verses on Xitter (pronounced shitter), as Intel's was back in August.

I don't really want to see anyone win this war, I just want to see them endlessly gutpunch each other in the form of releases that are good for consumers. Once one party is a non-competitor, the industry will just return directly back to stagnation as we saw during the Sandy Bridge to Haswell/Skylake era.

My problem was that the 3950X was not all that much better in single threads than the Haswells E that I had well overclocked almost 5 years earlier. Obviously the overall plaftorm of the X570 was much better in many ways. In 3 years then the single threadly was up 50%. Now, 5 years after the 3950X the iNtel is almost double on single threads and the others not so far behind.

Apparently, we're getting an updated DIMM standard, CUDIMMs, with Arrow Lake and probably eventually on AM5. The idea is that these modules will have their own clocking chips per module so they will always run at their rated speed. This should solve the 4-slot problem on desktop platforms and offer greater benefit to high speed DIMMs, but I'm not sure if it's something that can be added with a BIOS update or if we have to wait for chipset support.

The new DIMMs can be but are not necessarily backward compatible.

We should also see pricing on Zen 5 X3D real soon now.

That will be great if it addresses that 4-slot issue especially where the speed as to drop considerably with 4 DIMMs.

It will probably be on the next AMD CPUs with a new MB, but same AM5 sockets. Of course they will also enforce the AI and asymmetrical cores by then.

There are some benchmarks and the rumored pricing basically suggests we'll see the X3Ds at roughly "one step up" pricing vs the the Xs, so a ~$600 9900X3D. I'm curious but not that interested.

You already have the 9i9050x, but those of us with archaic 7950x are burnin' ahole in the pockets for a new CPU. :D

Oops, I need a new keyboard on ANdroid.
Yet his 14900K is crappy due to the iNtel manufacturing defects. ;) :)
If I don't buy a new CPU I might buy more SSDs instead, which may not be a good idea.

I have mentality a certain budget for computer stuff, so it matters. I also do not buy anything used or resell anything.
What is reasonable for annual personal consumption, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, more?

I ran into one of the Marsala brothers on an airplane. I was clueless about the attention he got, but I ended up with the FO breakfast so it was OK.

I don't have a hard number. I like the idea of having a capable system and my professional life means I can accumulate hardware regardless.

I don't have a firm limit either. I also go long periods of time with the same equipment. This year will be my spendy year while I refresh systems but I'm not expecting the same amounts next year.

Something happened to the forum (again). :(

I mean what is your estimate for 5-10 years?
It seems that every time there is a tech breakthrough my costs increase.
In the early days I was just scanning 135 film and then it went up to 6x9, but the computers were just inadequate.
In 2003 I became fully digital and by the end of 2004 we had 16.7MP. Between then and 2015 there was only a milder bump to 21/22MP in ~2008.
In 2015 we had 50MP, which slowed down the processor and increased the storage needs. I had upgraded in early 2015 to avoid the Windows XP.
NAS units followed the need for increased storage. Costs balloned. Then in 2020 MILS arrived in Canon, though I was officially stuck in the states until 2021. The CFe enabled much higher capture rates and then the Stackable sensors even more. That's not to mention the parallels of SOny 61MP in the 2020s.

What happened to the forum since you've stated something happened "again" and I've not seen any outages or errors?

My 5-10 year estimates are probably in the 6-15K range but I don't really know. Homelab stuff is every 7-10 year refresh and desktops around 4-5 years. I don't have the same requirements, use-cases, and restrictions like you have so my costs are probably less. I'm perfectly fine piecing together a server or NAS from parts vs commercial products because I'm trading my time to manage/troubleshoot it was relying on a complete product. I use them as opportunities to learn and then have use for them. That goes towards some amounts of skill reinforcements and training for my career since it's IT-based software/hardware dev vs where yours is film/camera/media of some kind based on what I can piece together.

I mean my posts are going into the incorrect forum maybe due to the FireFox or the VRPN; I don't know why.

My jobs have nothing to do with anything I can discuss oline. ;) Maybe someday I can mnetion it.

Back in the early part of this century I was spending about $2k/year on computers and accessories (at the time about 15% of my take home income, and 90% of my discretionary spending). By about 2005 my income grew enough that it became unreasonable to keep that ratio (also *cough* married *cough*). These days I'm doing about $7k/year.

I firmly believe LM works for a three letter agency, something that definitely involves words like attaché.
I think I'm on a roughly four year replacement cycle. Storage is what changes the most for me, mostly by what storage is cheapest and when.

I'd be surprised if I spent $10K on everything computer related in my entire life. In the beginning I was getting a lot of my systems from the curb. About the only things I bought back then were storage and memory, plus an occasional expansion card. The laptop I bought recently was my largest one-time PC purchase ever.

That might explain why he never sells his old stuff, and seems paranoid when disposing of old hard drives. Only the most determined person with special equipment can reconstruct data from a wiped HDD. It's impossible to do so with a wiped SSD. The data is gone, plain and simple.

I am a civilian working for a company that is related to other companies. I don't keep track of all the complicated global connections and I don't say who I work for, but it is probably not why you think.

Do you think I am so silly to store any security "company data" on my personal systems? Do you know what a breach that could be?

It's not feasible to wipe a broken drive.

This is of course exactly what the point man for a deep state Globalist kill team operator would have us believe, that the civilian employee of a company that is related to other companies would have nothing to do with the goings-on of late-70s Rhodesia and collapse of leftist popular governments across Central and South America throughout the 80s. Of course.

😁

How old do you think I am? I was hardly the Doogie Howitzer of the 1970s. ;)
In the 1980s I was positioned in the Caribbean (Greater Antilles) and several countries in Europe. I just so happened to be in West Germany when the wall came down. That was interesting, but doesn't mean anything. It's hard to believe already 35 years.

I did not have a computer in the 1980s. Everything was analog and paper or special equipment that did not connect to anything other than a printer. I suspect that we were deliberately primitive, but I did not realize it at the time.

LM was definitely the Doogie Howitzer of convenient political target removals. While his early career largely revolved around single-targets that were avowed enemies of the Carter Administration and in support of British rule in southeast Africa, he quickly moved on to large-scale political sabotage throughout the Caribbean, Central Africa and eventually the facilitated the removal of his primary rival, Generaloberst Markus Wolf, Ministry of State Security, DDR, and has since been rewarded with a long-term deep-cover identity as a civilian employee of a company that is related to other companies, where he is able to freely travel to further the reach of American democracy.

While he did not have a computer throughout the eras of his most storied exploits, he instead documented everything in carefully typed missives submitted monthly to both Robert K. Brown's Soldier of Fortune and of course Bob Guiccione's Penthouse. You know, for the good parts.

😁😁😁😁😁

We will continue the discussion of LM's contributions to both American imperialism and The Bourbon Review shortly but we have a launch date for Zen5 X3D, November 7th, as well as mention of ~10% price cuts on non-3D Zen 5s real soon now.

Sure. The iNtel has better single-threads and it's probably a fine CPU for human use, not as flame-throwering.
I'm wondering if AMD is just prioritizing the single-CCD X3D for holiday shoppers so the kids can play games???
I suppose if the 9950X3D has no deterioration of speeds compared to the regular 9950X it might be worth it.
