I'm sure it was perfectly moral and right at some time 5-10 thousand years ago, just as people from then would find many of our customs today deplorable.

So you would be ok with being someone's slave then? There's nothing wrong with it, as long as you're the master right?

Apparently the new trend in e-tail is reducing costs for logistics. Newegg's getting worse, Amazon's getting worse. This does not bode well.

It is really awful. An order placed on Wednesday would normally be here on Friday 8-JUL via 2-day fedex or UPS shipping. Now I had it shipped 3-day UPS/Fedex so it arrives on Monday, but I cannot receive it. I will have to wait until the following Saturday 16-JUL to pick up the package.

A side note: shipping two 8.5"x11" pieces of paper from here to my mother-in-law's in Moscow, with tracking, in less than a week, was over $100.

FedEx and friends are very expensive if you don't have an account, but are just a guy off the street walking into Kinkos / FedEx off / UPS Store / etc.

I bet your mother in law could ship the same thing back to you the same way for about 1/3rd the cost though. That's how it was when I did something similar to Taiwan.

I got an account with discount through work. It is something like 20-25% off air and 30+% off of ground for fedex. Think UPS has similar things, though not through our company. If you just create an account on their site you get a discount I think but I don't believe it is that good.

I was just looking through this thread, recalling many of the usernames.

So, ummm... did something catastrophic happen to Udaman or did he just decide to move on 14 months ago?

Doug finally sent Uda packing after repeated warnings for obnoxious posts.

Udaman was banned for continuous trolling. In some odd way, Udaman occasionally had a good topic or argument, but he/she/it went out of its way to evoke a negative response from people and would not respond when confronted. I would guess 90% of the normal active users eventually blocked posts from Uda. Uda would go out of his way to edit his posts to change the wording to be more difficult to read. That was a clear sign of his goals here. A 3-month ban was put into place and we haven't seen him since.

Went and saw "Avenue Q" in San Jose today; it was awesome. The stage was the same height as the front row of seats, and we were front and center.

Songs include "Sucks to be you", "Everyone's a little bit racist", and the famous "The Internet is for Porn".

Highly recommended.

Made some homemade chocolate ice cream tonight with my girlfriend. Came out yummy as hell. It's currently in the freezer getting colder so we can consume it.

Why would you need liquid nitrogen? You can get ice cream machines which use salt and ice.

It isn't as much fun.

1. Make batter
2. Add LN
3. Stir like crazy

I didn't say it tastes better, it really has nothing to do with the ice cream itself. It is just a lot of fun.

I wasn't suggesting it would taste better either. I just feel like LN would be a more complicated and potentially harmful way to make ice cream. :) We just used a simple ice cream appliance that uses a frozen bowl. The bowl spins and a stationary scraper scrapes the ice cream off the sides as it freezes and continues to mix the unfrozen in. It seems to work pretty well.

Liquid nitrogen is rather dangerous to handle as it can splash or leak from improper containers that cannot handle temperature changes. We had some employee frostbite injuries back in the day. Liquid nitrogen is not something that most people need in their homes anyway.

Most people that have access to it also have access to appropriate safety equipment. I was the only person there who wasn't either a grad student or instructor at Stanford.

Was that for undergrad? Were you a physics major or something else?

Anyway, I'm not sure I trust students very much. :) When I was a student a few eons ago, some geniuses blew up and burned almost an entire floor of the Chemistry building. :(

I don't know about the US but I don't think you need any authorization to use LN in the UK. It's dangerous but not any more-so than black-powder or something and you don't need any special licence for that.

... Of course if it was someone else's LN then I can see how authorization might have been required...

I don't think I have the ventilation required in my place to safely make ice-cream like that though. I've had to content myself with chucking frozen fruit and yogurt (and some double cream) in the blender and making frozen yogurt. Unfortunately the supermarkets near me stopped selling frozen mango and raspberries so I can't get them all year 'round anymore.

Just ordered a set of Continental ExtremeContact DW tires for my car (225/40-18). While the Tire Rack and others advertise low prices, none of them can give me an ETA for availability. My local shop will have them for me by the middle of next week, but after shipping, install, alignment, balancing, and tax it will be around $1k. We'll see if they last longer than the 16k miles I got from the OEM Bridgestone Potenza RE-050A.

Wait, you mean the people with the best prices can't keep the product in stock and people who have so-so prices have 'em?

You don't say...

All the resellers are sourcing them from some warehouse somewhere, it's just that the money bought me someone to pick up the phone and get them coming.

He said he just ordered and he seems quite happy of his purchase. Now you tell him that he could have saved 180$. Evil man, you'll make him cry.

We'll see how happy I am when they show up. When I was shopping around, I was doing so without price being a consideration. Only after I had the top three sorted did I look at price. The only one above the DWs was the Pirelli P-Zero for double the price, so I think I did OK ;)

What has me pissed off at Oracle/Primavera today? How about buying a $1500 program, and then being stuck during the install until finding on page 4 of a PDF offered separately on a download gateway page the following:

A serial number is required during the installation of Primavera Contractor. Previously, this number was provided on the installation CD. Use a serial number of ******** when running the setup wizard.
The program prompts for a serial number. Nowhere during the e-delivery or e-mails does it mention this. Amazingly stupid.

I would use it as my signature if it wasn't already taken. Would I have more money, I would make a t-shirt with that statement on it.

There's a Primavera consultant right next door to be right now. Do you need implementation help? Because I'm pretty sure he needs money. And if you pay him, maybe he'll pay me.
