What's the verdict on Windows 7?

Flagreen! Great to see you posting again. How have you been? Thanks to David D. I'm using 7 32 bit on my old Dual Xeon machine, and 64 bit on The Beast(see signature). At the same time I went to 7, I also moved up to SSD's on both machines. 7 was the choice mainly since it had drivers for...

HMMMM. While I've been buying Intel, I can't help but notice that value wise, at least using Passmark's cpu Value the AMD chips seem to dominate. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_value_available.html

SSDs - State of the Product?

It's not quite that linear, but, pretty close. .2ms is the usual tests for SSD seeks. Raid 0 usually doesn't scale exactly double, but it's close enough for government work. Where this really shows is with the Kingspec SSD that transfers data at about half the speed of the 7200 RPM that it...

Dinosaurs worked for a LONG TIME.;-) Since Granite Digital specializes in removeable drive setups, and this seemed to be part of the issue, I would certainly check with them on their card experience. SI may have made a new generation card that is worth it, or may not have.

    Lower Power

Yes, it is. I was just looking at the specs and got the really sick idea of using SLI, as the prices drop... The card doesn't even come into play until I start gaming. I also have a large exhaust setup that blows on it.

Testing the 2.8 ghz xeons, running about 56-70 % and its running about 200-220 Watts.Thats with 3 vertex turbos, one SATA drive. 4670 ATI card, and one DVD burner, plus Magic Jack. Seasonic 550W power supply. At 5% processors, it's running 135 WATTS. At 15%, and this is what it usually is...

    Lower Power

Appears that adding a SATA drive would add about 15 WATTS, at least on the Dual Xeons it did. It booted at 135 Watts, and went up 15 WATTS when the removeable drive was put in. Define "load" on your tests, please.

Found my Kil a Watt. Just got done running The Beast doing Call of Duty 4 at about 30% processor power. It was in the 450-500Watt range. At idle it's about 221w. This with two Sata drives installed, and the others listed in the sig.

HI I've been using the Silcon Image SiL 3112 Sata Link Controller with excellent results. It's an old two port, but, I'd have a look at them for such stuff. I've found Granite Digital generally has had stuff that works, pretty much always. The problem is, they are some times too expensive...

    Quality 24"-28" LCD monitors

I just got back from Costco, and I was thinking of your post. The 24-27" Samsungs they had were expensive, and, the picture quality while very good, pales next to even the 60HZ VXT Vizios and Sony's, in 27-32". The TV's are built for much more abuse, heavier, more solid, and, the 32" side lit...

    Quality 24"-28" LCD monitors

You'll find the 32"-42" TV's, like the Vizio SVT, and some Sonys, 120hz or better, have the best screens, 10 bit, IIRC around. MUCH better then the computer monitors, at least from my side by side comparisions, and, with many more inputs.

I was a mac fanatic, just prior to X. When X came in, it pretty much made all my hardware worthless, no drivers. I tried to run multiple cards, in both PC's and Macs, with little success. RAID SSD controller?

Sounds good, if it works. One of the things I didn't like about the SCA 'backplane' from Supermicro was that each drive required it's own SATA cable. Not a 'backplane', at least to me, if that's the case(excuse the pun;-) How much are the cables?

Striker: I got a complete dog, that cost me about 33 dollars in shipping, a lot of time, with ebay finally backing me. The other, even though it's half your speed with the CF-51, or my regular drive, the access time improvement is so huge, the XP pro install feels like a new computer. Bottom...

So, go to new egg, look at CPU's, and look at thermal design power in the advanced options: So, I start with the same 140W the two Xeons are rated at, and come up with AMD Phenom X 4 9550 Black Edition. Not bad price, 157. 2152 on passmark, but, figure you buy that to overclock, which means...

One of their saving graces is they did do an excellent job of chopping XP Pro down to a very fast, small, os, without adding bloat, or junk ware. Panasonic does make the Semi-rugged line. Mine, the CF-51 was about 1300, with 1.25 gigs of ram, and 1400 with the SSD installed. Panasonic does an excellent job of making a solid, large laptop. I used it for teaching, hooking it up to a projector, etc...

That's how I feel about Panasonic. However, they are just too far behind the edge on offering processors, and, if they offer a decent processor, the laptop is 4 grand. One of these days we'll have to get together and compare the build feel between the Thinkpads and the CF-51. Also, I tend to...
