    I'm retiring

Today is my last day at work. In a way I'm a little sad. With 35 years at the same place, I've worked with some really great people. I will miss them.

Actually learning any of the older OSs will be a huge benefit down the road. Things like AS400 and Open VMS are still being used and probably will for quite some time.

The company that I used to work for does this. Turnover is terrible with most employees lasting about 5 years. The quality of the product we manufacture suffers too. The saying "Jack of all trades, Master on none" comes to mind. The employee never gets a chance to get a 'feel' for the process...

    Ultra Dimm

If it's non-volatile I wonder if you could boot from it?? In the BIOS there would be a selection to boot from memory and possibly one of the memory slots could be a dedicated 'boot slot'. The desktop would be up before your finger got off the power button.

We were notified by our credit card company earlier this week that someone tried to buy $1400.00 of software from Japan. Wrong! The card was canceled. Thanks everyone. I'll still visit Storage Forum. I might be retiring but I still need to keep my mind busy. I have already been ask to go in where I worked as a consultant so I will still need to be current with what's new. I am sure I'll be busy at home as well. We have a 4 month old grand...

    I'm retiring

I'm retiring! January 31 is my last official day at work, February 1 is my first day of retirement. It's kind of scary. I've had a job of some sort since I was 13, and on some occasions worked two jobs to make ends meet. It's going to be strange not getting up and 'going to work'. But I'm sure...

What were you worst computer related mistakes made?

When it comes to screwing up computer stuff, sometimes just getting up in the morning was a mistake. :) My 'office' is in the basement. New Computer

Intel seems to be more concerned about changing socket size every 6 months; changing (Improving??) the internals of the CPUs they are already making so they can't be used in any existing motherboard; reducing the power consumption so you need to buy multiple CPUs with multiple cores if you want...

problem Desktop pc freezes after I put it to Sleep a 2nd time

I agree. All the computers/servers that I build run 24/7/365 and I have more monitors and power supplies (usually the fan dies) fail than hard drives.

OpenBSD needs 20K$ to pay electricity bill.

Heating, cooling and lighting would also be part of that bill. Depending on the building size that could be a substantial part of the bill.

If write cache was disabled, then what is the point of the test. If write cache is disabled on a spinning hard drive, there is a 99% chance you are going to lose or corrupt the data too. question Is an Intel E8400 CPU compatible with an Intel D946GZIS MB?

The worst that could happen is you would fry the CPU. In my experience with Intel motherboards, if the CPU is not listed, it won't work. Intel support for that motherboard ended in 2009. In motherboard years, it is from the stone age. Intel also says it won't support Win 7. You could read the...

question What are the pros and cons of enabling the fan speed control function in BIOS setup?

The only advantage to using the motherboard fan control is fan speed control and noise. I'm sure there are fan controllers available that can do the same thing. Antec makes fans with an automatic speed control built in. Like this. I'm sure others do too.
