    POLL: $pera, $ozilla, $xplorer and $irefox

Tony, I think that the browser market would greatly benefit if your scenario were true - all browsers came packaged separately and were sold based on their own merit, not bundled in an OS for "free". In particular, I think we would see a drastic change with IE, because Microsoft would not...

FireFox 0.9.3 or greater ~$50.00 IE 6.0 or greater ~$50.00 Opera 7.5x - 8.xx $20.00 Since I create web content I personally feel a need to purchase all three. As a web user, I would exclude Opera. IE does make browsing a very small, but important amount of websites possible, but FireFox would...

    Opera and the common barnacle

Just in case you were actually pointing that post in my direction: This has nothing to do with spending money, or the amount of money spent! Why should I spend money on Opera when FireFox is better?!? If you don't quite understand this basic principle, I have some ocean front property in...

    Macmini, who's interested?

He could be correct, and the strategy would work. My only gripe with the Mac Mini for this type of operation is that it doesn't have digital surround sound. It needs at least a digital coax connection to plug into a good receiver.

    DVD Burner Recommendations?

Indeed, it is not as if one company is branding another, they just begin with the same chipset. Both the Pioneer and NEC product read DVD-RAM. Considering that their capabilities, performance, and chipsets are similar, I would certainly group them together - although as you pointed out, their...

    Opera and the common barnacle

You can exclude me from that crowd. I gladly pay for software that is worth the money, I do not use software simply because it is free. But for me there are three browser options, IE, FireFox, and Opera. IE is nice, but it is plagued with security vulnerabilities that are regularly exploited...

    DVD Burner Recommendations?

Mubs, both the Pioneer 108 series and the NEC 3500 series use the same NEC chipsets. They are built differently, but they both start with something in common. The Asus DRW-1604P uses the same NEC D63635GM and C3335 chipsets.

    Cable for your Cable Modem

Plenum and non-plenum coaxial or twinaxial cables differ in jacket material and size, plus core dielectric material and size. Although this has a minor affect on attenuation, it has ~5-10% affect on capacitance.
  25. Buck

    Cable for your Cable Modem

The attenuation is directly linked to the frequency of operation. For example, a nominal attenuation at 1MHz is ~.5db/100' (1,9/100m), at 400MHz it would be ~15db/100' (50,0/100m). Obviously this would depend upon the cable grade, such as plenum and non-plenum, specific Apple Talk LAN grade...

    Cable for your Cable Modem

In particular, if you open up the twinaxial cable, stick each wire into an electrical outlet, and then wrap you lips around the other end -- you'll see all sorts of brilliant colors!

    Cable for your Cable Modem

Normally at 300V and ~70ohms, I would expect this to be a twinaxial cable which is used for AS/400s and other IBM machines. Instead of using a single conductor, it has two insulated conductors twisted into a pair. Twinaxial is great for reducing noise. The voltage is not what you would...

    Cable for your Cable Modem

No, it doesn't matter. The 300V just shows that the cable is capable of handling 300 volts.

I see you visited your psychiatirst, Mr. Axe. It seems that he's in good shape and your session was successful. Oh, and I'm surprised that the drive survived, I've heard about and seen similar situations (without the axe) where a WD drive survived a catastrophic event.
