    This site is awesome ....

298 errors? It went up to 301 then. Wow, that page looks BAD! I have never seen anything that bad (granted I don't go surfing much, usually sticking to my regular sites).

    Yay! I installed Fedora...now what?

Oops, this is true. Could still be done though, probably in around 100mbytes (a liberal guess I think). Dun't know. Just a possible option. Yes, actually. I only installed Debian once. I have it running on 7 machines. All I did was clone with Ghost. Of course, they have all taken their own...

Sometimes it works to simply use Konqueror and set the browser identification to IE. Only about half the time though (if that).

Pretty cool. I have my doubts about something like that taking off. Too much movement. People are lazy. :)

All birds dead in Esperance, Au?

Sad, and quite bizarre. It sounds to me like a mass poisoning. We had some chickens who found some Diazinon (ant/grub/etc killer) very tasty. They died almost instantly after eating some of it.

    Buying keyboards in bulk

Do you know something I don't? I'll raise prices. I really only need a few right now, but I was thinking this might be a good thing for the long term as I wouldn't have to buy any for quite a while. But maybe it would be better just to wait for a smaller lot.

    Buying keyboards in bulk

There is an offer on eBay right now , ending soon, that is very tempting to me. But I'm not knowledgeable about keyboards. Just wondering if this is actually a good deal or not. It would come out to about 2.50 per board.

How to upgrade/install programs in Linux

The easiest way in a Debian based system is to log in as root and run "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade", and that will upgrade your whole system. Pure debian, I've heard, updates more easily than Ubuntu (as things are less likely to break). If you want the absolute latest firefox from...

    IBM 9517 Monitors from PS/2s

There are two stores (O's and Wintergreen) where I can buy them used (25-50 dollars I think), but other than that I don't know. I'm always on the lookout for freebies, of course. That's why I ended up with these.

    Simple business PC

Merc, or anyone who knows chipsets, which boards are most Linux-friendly? nvidia obviously is not the best in that arena unless you use their proprietary drivers. I've heard that Intel is good because they recently opened their hardware specs (at least on video chipsets), but I'm not sure about VIA.

    IBM 9517 Monitors from PS/2s

I just freely acquired some old PS/2 machines and IBM 9517-001 (supposedly XGA) monitors. Unfortunately, these monitors ONLY work with the PS/2 machines. On any other computers (DOS/Windows/Linux/PCs in general) it just jumps and flickers insanely. Is there something I should know? A "normal"...

Best *nix OS for hosting a website

Mubs, you're not going to believe this (well, maybe you are), but I saw what you posted and thought, "hey, somewhere just recently I wrote the word 'pregidous', pretty much knowing it was obviously not right. Now where was it?" It took me a minute to realize it was, uh, right up there.

Best *nix OS for hosting a website

I've never actually tried FreeBSD but I too have heard that it's better than Linux for web hosting. Mainly that it tends to work better under load. Of course I wouldn't say it's marketing since it's free . . . :) But then I'm sure there is lots of pregidous among many BSD users. I have used...

    Samsung SpitPoint 500GB

Why is it that Samsung drives seem significantly cheaper than other brands? When I'm looking for drives on Newegg I noticed that Samsungs are rarely on the front "featured" page, but when I look for a specific manufacturer (Samsung), every one of them beats the prices of the featured drives. Why...

    Mormons Knocking at Your Door?

At least Mormons don't come with guns, so really they aren't dangerous. At least not to Atheists. Now Christians such as myself believe that a cult like Mormonism is a hindrance to those who may otherwise become Christians. If LDS people come to our door, we just show them how their book of...

NEWZ: Microsoft & Novelll Windoze/Linux Blockbuster Deal

Apparently this agreement is to allow Novell to use Microsoft's patents in their code, thereby achieving better "interoperability" with MS Office formats and such. So while these changes will probably be "open source," no one will be allowed to use them except Novell and SuSE. So IMO this...

NEWZ: Microsoft & Novelll Windoze/Linux Blockbuster Deal

A lot of people think this means Microsoft or Novell can patent code and sue those who use/develop Linux aside from Novell's umbrella. I'm not sure what to think until all the smoke clears. "The Volnovo pact will mean that non-commercial individual contributors can make Open Source, but if...

    More Vista nonsense

I'm afraid I would have to go with Ultimate to avoid punching a hole in my computer screen. Although I'm not sure that would entirely prevent it either, just delay it. One of the biggest things being touted by Vista fans I run across is the multimedia junk. Not that XP didn't have it, just that...

At this point, we have five office computers, four of which I'm not planning to upgrade at all, except maybe to Linux-only. What's the latest and greatest in anti spyware?

I was being somewhat sarcastic. If someone seems prone to continually get viruses and whatnot, and if they are someone I live close to or see often, they will be getting Linux and be told to not use the Windows side of their drive (if applicable) for any Internet activity.

What's the latest and greatest in anti spyware?

I think dd has the right idea; people need to be punished for their carelessness, then they don't do it again. They should never be allowed to let their guard down or lose that sense of danger. I have a friend who used Windows for years and then "converted" to Linux and used it until his power...

    Good DVD Burner?

    Good DVD Burner?

What's the best brand and/or model of DVD-RW drive? I just bought a Lite-On SHW-160P6S, which for around 20 bucksa (newegg), I was pretty pleased with when I tested it out. Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G network problem

The motherboard BIOS is fairly recent. I believe it is May of 2006. I don't know if I technically have the *latest* drivers for Linux, but I do have kernel 2.6.16. Maybe it would help to uninstall the nvidia drivers that came with the motherboard for Windows?

    Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G network problem

Hi everyone. I got this nice little board at Merc's suggestion (thanks, btw). I only have one complaint. Looking for a computer for a friend

This question involves someone else who wants Windows: what's the best deal for them (they already have a Windows license, so pre-installed is certainly not necessary)? Merc, you say that this Gigabyte motherboard is what you recommend for low-end systems - what is your pick for middle of the road or high-end? Just curious. With different partition types, filesystem types and so on, you have different options that need to be set. Here's one I actually know, although it appears I'm too late. Anyway, you were attempting to boot Windows off of the Linux swap partition (type 0x82), and Linux off of (I think) some kind of Windows (2000?) partition (type 0x42). I have dealt with this problem with GRUB so much with dual-booting...
