    The Best Mice are back...

I'm still using Intellimouse 1.0 and 1.1A, the former I got back on 27th October 1998 :D I'm so used to them anything else feels annoying. Opticals I find glide along too easily and are very light.

I've never used one of those, although heard good things about them. Are they really that good?

    27 hours

I've been up I think around 50 hours or so. Towards the end I would laugh uncontrollably at the most trivial of things, feel extremely hungry, shiver for no reason and have some mild hallucinations. And to think some pay big dollars for drugs to do that to them.

    [NEWS] - SpinRite 6.0

NTFS support is good. The problem is, I've not yet been willing to leave my machine in DOS for 20 hours till it does its stuff. Apparently it has an option to install it on a USB flash disk or make a bootable ISO to burn on CD. Good stuff.

[NEWS] - The end of MBM

I use Hardware Sensors Monitor Pro. Nice simple interface, small size and generally neater than MBM. Ever since that came out a few years ago, I stopped using MBM which ended up bloated and full of useless features IMO.

    Nexus PS

My neighbours system runs a FSP 300W PSU with 8 hard drives, 3 opticals, a 2940U2W, P4 2.4, 512mb, and Radeon 9200. Works fine but the cabling is a nightmare. I never understood the point of a fanless PSU. There is going to have to be a fan somewhere in the system anyway to extract heat from...

Hard Drive Drawer / Caddy - what's good?

I find that using external USB2/Firewire enclosures with a regular 3.5" drive is a more reliable option and costs the same. Plus, if you swap from machine to machine you dont need to buy an extra receptacle thing, whatever its called. Only downside is if a machine doesn't support USB2 in which...

    CCD cameras and nighvision/IR LEDs?

Thats a little more than I was expecting to pay... I've built the illuminator with 15 leds but not had time to test it properly. A quick test seems to show that it is way too weak to light anything beyond 1 ft. But that was a quick test with my Canon A30 and possibly with an incorrect voltage...

    CCD cameras and nighvision/IR LEDs?

Thanks for your help jtr1962. I notice that the quoted power varies significantly from type to type, with the brighter IR LEDs in the 35mW range. I will try a few but pointing three remote controls at the wall 10 inches away while simultaneously transmitting in a dark room doesn't appear to...

    CCD cameras and nighvision/IR LEDs?

Hi guys, I've got a CCD camera which appears sensitive to IR (pointing a TV remote at it shows the IR LED blinking), I'm wandering if I can just get a perforated PCB, mount a few IR LEDs on it and use it as nightvision? If so, does anyone know what specs are required for the LEDs (wavelength &...

I doubt it would be able to go significantly faster than 400km/h even without the limiter. It takes a hell of a lot to go that fast, although the Maclaren F-1 did manage 391km/h with just over half the power... I've gotta say I much prefered the looks of the old EB110SS to those of the Veyron...

    Antec TruePower PSU...same as ChannelWell?

To confirm, all recent Antecs I've seen (both truepower and smartpower) have been CWT designs with CWT clearly visible on the transformers. The CWT PSUs are significantly cheaper than the Antec ones, I've got a pricelist for a CWT 550W dual fan, boxed which appears spec wise identical to the...

    Zalman power supplies

How quiet do you need it to be? My choice, if the ZM300 is too loud, would be to swap the fan for a Panaflo L1A. I have done this and its really quiet.

    Zalman power supplies

If you open a 300 and 400 up to compare, the 400's heatsinks are positively massive and thick, and they come with a top quality NMB fan. The 300W versions come with smaller heatsinks and a Protechnic fan - its not a known brand although it seems of good quality. Having used several samples of...

    Mobile Athlon Chips

I like these boards for budget systems as they are very cheap (under £40) for the quantity and quality of onboard stuff they include. For the same price you could get an ECS board with onboard SiS graphics and audio of much lower quality and questionable stability.

    Mobile Athlon Chips

I've had good luck with the Asus A7N266-VM which is an early micro ATX nForce board with onboard everything. I believe Tony used to use these some time back.

    Suggestions for new power supply

Can you not get hold of the FSP300-60PN (PF)? It has passive PFC but much better than none at all. Some users say that the PF version has a louder fan than the non-PF versions, I haven't been able to test this for myself as I cannot get hold of the non PFC version but even the PFC versions are...

    Suggestions for new power supply

If you want quiet I'd go with the 300-60PN, the Sparkle/FSP that jtr1962 linked to will likely be pretty loud - many of FSP/SPI's PSUs come with a noise killer with a linear response curve so you usually have the fan running at full speed or close to that within a few minutes of powering up...

Papst fans - are they not supposed to be quiet?

Yes Yes, it should comfortably handle it as maximum dissipation allowed will be 20W and we're only asking them to dissipate under 10W.

''State Of The Art'' CPU Cooling (Circa Dec 2003)

Yes you are paranoid... 40C is just above human body temperature. I used to run mine more like 65C for over 18 months, painful to touch the heatsink but it never crashed or caused problems. The CPU (an XP1800 Palo) is running happily in a friends machine now. With the depreciation of CPUs and...

they are the ribbed/vented Panaflo - supposedly slightly lower noise than the regular ones. It is commonly believed that the SilentBoost is simply a Thermalright SLK800 with a Panaflo on top.

Papst fans - are they not supposed to be quiet?

To clarify, 25dB *each* at 7v
  47. N

Papst fans - are they not supposed to be quiet?

running those fans at 7v should give more like 25dB which will likely be plenty quiet for a server room. Five fans at 43dB are over 50dB combined and thats in free space, not mounted on a heatsink or enclosure so I can imagine how things could get out of hand.

''State Of The Art'' CPU Cooling (Circa Dec 2003)

Yes, the ones which are adjustable with a screwdriver are referred to as trimmers, trimpots or presets. I could just use a pot by itself but I know this particular selection of components gives a voltage range of 5 to 10v from min to max, and can handle virtually any fan one can throw at it...

''State Of The Art'' CPU Cooling (Circa Dec 2003)

I'm here, as expected ;) Take a look on www.silentpcreview.com, they have some very good testing procedures for quiet heatsinks, PSUs, etc. Currently, the Thermalright SLK900U, Zalman CNPS7000AlCu, or Thermalright SLK800U are good choices, in that order. For fans, a 92mm is ideal as you can...
