I didn't bother with a Smart-UPS for the house, this does more than I need.

Same here. I wouldn't have a simple way to connect the UPS units for the TVs, cable boxes, etc. to computers.

I have two of the XS LCD 1300 units. How is the RS different from the XS LCD? The features you mentioned are similar. I thought the RS was just an update of the XS.

Stolen from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/APC-Back-UPS-Watts-Output-System/dp/B000NDA5E0

"The difference:

1. RS model has additional phone/fax/model/10/100base-T ethernet protection. The XS only has phone/fax/modem protection.
2. Auto Voltage Regulation is capable of BOOST (due from low voltage) and TRIM (from over voltage). Again, the XS model only has BOOST, and no TRIM feature."

Both are available, premium pricing applies to the RS.

Basic PowerChute Personal doesn't really do anything that Win 7 can't (except showing the front display/history), you need to move to the "business" versions if you want it to run scripts/commands on events etc.

What I really want is a logging capability with graphs for voltage over time and flagged events. Not sure where I need to go to get such things.

What kind of events?

2/22/10 15:33:28 Power Restored

For reporting on a bunch of other stuff. We have a monster UPS for the server room, but the reporting module for it is $2k+. I can just pay a few hundred for one of these and get all the reporting off it.

Oh, I thought that was for your personal use.

If the clocks must be reset, what difference does it make when or for how long the power was out?

This is old information.

The only difference between the models is the sales channel. The premium for the RS is because it is part of an entire line from APC. Check the product pages:
http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR1500LCD
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BX1500LCD

I have one RS and one XS. The only difference between them is the power specification (one is 1500VA and the other 1300VA).

That looks perfect, Stereodude. Is that a software-only upgrade compatible with the RS, or do I need a proper Smart-UPS?
Once upon a time, I ran the business edition, and there were no issues running it with a Back-UPS unit.

The software doesn't seem to be freely available.

Which software? APC Powerchute This is the personal edition. The last time I used it the only difference between the business and the personal was the number of agents allowed and my memory says 25 vs 5. As long as you don't have more than 5 machines to monitor, then personal should work just fine.

Registration is not in my best interest.
You are the best judge of that. Then you need to find it being hosted by someone else on a P2P site somewhere or find a friend that does not have your peculiar limitations and have him/her DL it for you. Then there is always the do without solution.

There is no need to judge. He is an adult (or so I think) and therefore he is the best judge of what is or is not his own best interest. His decision doesn't hurt me nor anyone else so it is none of our collective business. Time to move on.

If you want to protect your information, use a temporary email and enter in fake data for the rest of the registration. If IP tracking concerns you, try using some kind of proxy when visiting their site.

It is only the UPS. TMI for the value.

I have not tried the bugmenoit. Is it reliable?

This just saved by bacon.

Working at a temp site with some really funky power. I blow a fuse, so they move me to another circuit. Instantly two power strips connected to that circuit catch fire and the 4 LCD monitors connected to it fry their power bricks. This UPS just started beeping and switched to battery. Saved a stack of workstations.

So I spent $75 on new batteries and they only run 3 minutes at 90W. WTF? :crucified:

It's related to the event thread and some postings on something random thread.
