    dSLR thread

My birthday is coming up so I'm looking at lenses for my Nikon D40. There are two I'm considering: 35mm f/1.8 AFS @ $280 And the newer to be released in June 50mm f/1.8 AFS @ $220 The 35mm is a DX format only so if I was to actually get the mega expensive nikon body I want, it would be not so...

    Email Group Handling

But with google groups, all the members have to join. I was thinking something along the lines of only the people sending the mail have to join and they maintain a central contact list. So the leader would e-mail an alias and that alias was hosted somewhere else and would relay the message...

    Email Group Handling

So the local cub scouts pack has an issue with maintaining the list of people to email. What happens is that people just reply to an old email with the the entire list. So what happens is that bad or incorrect or no longer with the pack people end up getting e-mail. I've suggested switching...

Gmail has this new labs feature for smart filters. It adds a bulk filter and a notification filter and a forum filter. You can change what the filter does. They seem to learn. The bulk filter cut out all the ad type mail I receive that isn't straight spam and auto archives it.

Data recovery on a Vertex 120GB

I'm not sure how these drives die. I mean is it a power issue? Reflashing might work. How heat would affect the components I don't know. Would it kill the RAM they use for cache? Or where the firmware is stored?

Crucial C300 64GB for $100 with free shipping from newegg. Today only I think. You need a coupon code. http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=923806&t=2915411 I'm highly tempted but my desktop machine is really fast enough as it is. And that isn't big enough for my laptop.

No, the little one, who is almost 6 now, had to go pee. He was holding it for some time. I'm sure it'll be a youtube clip somewhere soon.

    Best movie you've seen

I thought it was good. Kind of weird to expect a plot twist in a story we mostly already know. I mean loki being a frost giant was news to me (never read the comics - only saw cartoons). I kind of wonder how he'll get back to earth though.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I was looking at those but the newegg reviews made me second guess those drives. In other ssd news, crucial released firmware 007 for the C300 drives which seems to have fixed the stuttering issues some experienced. Some mac users still report issues.

    Google Apps For Your Domain

That's a bummer. I was just about to recommend the local scout pack switch to google apps and give each leader an account. But we'd need at least 10 accounts.

Most of the time I'm working around the asp.net framework to get stuff done. I have multiple forms on one page, they just aren't controlled by asp.net (no runat=server). And all my code is in the code behind module.

This was bound to happen from an economic standpoint though. The hard drive business must be really low margin. I mean you get a 1TB drive for like $60 and a 2TB for like $80. When the margins get low, you have to do volume.

question Transcend 16gb & 8gb pata ssd works great for my Thinkpad!

Wait the T42 has a PATA main drive bay but a SATA CDROM drive bay? Shouldn't it be the other way around. I know that is the problem with my old dell laptop. Even if I got a media bay adaptor, it'd have to be a PATA drive.

Mounted it over the fireplace. Looks nice. It is plenty big and doesn't seem too far away. We did switch to floor lamps to get rid of light reflections on the TV. Interestingly, about a week after I received it they disappeared from just about everywhere. I guess there wasn't much stock left...

I like the C300 too but I'm waiting till they resolve the firmware issue apparent in version 006. Just review their online forums. If you get a firmware version 002 drive you should be fine. You can't rollback the firmware version.

Just found the /b flag for chkdsk in windows 7. I told Acronis 2010 to ignore bad sectors when making the backup. Apparently that didn't work as the restore had the same bad sector count. The /b flag should clear the bad clusters. This doesn't exist on XP.

Laptop Drive has bad sectors - what should I replace it with

There is like 75GB of data already there so that won't fly. And the 120GB SSDs seem to be over $200. Can't seem to find a good notebook drive roundup. In the one I found at tom's the Western Digitals seems to be the fastest but I'm hesitant to replace a busted one with the same thing.

Hitachi Data Systems to spin of storage division

Maybe this is a good thing and new WD drives won't suck? I think WD gets bigger as a player to compete better with Seagate. I hope this will increase their design capability and manufacturing quality.

So we have Samsung, WD, and Seagate to choose from now? At least in the spinning disk area. Which at this point must be pretty low margin.

    Why must TV forsake me?

Yes it would probably add significant production lag and possible cost. But they have to test it anyway so.... We'll get a tilting mount so the viewing angle is more direct. I've attached a sketch of the room layout. It kind of sucks where the TV is now. The windows reflects on it even with...

    question Larger TVs

I'm not really that interested in the 3D but the difference in price is like $25 (for the TV anyway). The glasses are another expense. I think I'll stick with the plasma.

    question Larger TVs

Which leads to the question, what would you buy instead that is less than a grand and 50" or larger and has good vertical viewing angles since we'll be looking up at the TV?
