T-mobile gives around 50GB now per month before the throttling. An OS update is only about a GB.

    16TB Toshiba CMR

What are the thoughts on Toshiba hard drives in 2019? I recall they were given some Hitachi 3.5' technology some years ago to alleviate the WD and Seagate duopoly. In the early days of 1TB/platter the Toshiba drives were cheap but not very reliable. :(

SSDs - State of the Product?

The two use cases listed are all-flash NAS like the FS3017 and as caching SSDs such as found in many NAS (especially QNAP) nowadays. I assume that Seagate is targeting a specific performance/durability/capacity compromise that fits those use cases and that their marketing believes there are...

SSDs - State of the Product?

That's probably not the typical NAS use case. They mention Synology FS3017 which has 24 bays, so maybe they expect the load to be spread across a larger number of drives. Of course the FS3017 and 24x4TB for example would cost as much as some cars. Or maybe the Dudering will buy one. :D

    16TB Toshiba CMR

This is not new. AFAIK all drives have used PMR for years, even the ones with shingles. As other features such as HMR and MMR enter the market it makes more sense to use CMR as a generic term for a drive that has no shingles, HMR, MMR, etc.
  20. LunarMist

    16TB Toshiba CMR

It is the newer term Conventional MR as compared to the horrid shingles.

SSDs - State of the Product?

How many TB is that? I was thinking 8x4TB in RAID 5 would not see more than 1DRWD.
  22. LunarMist

SSDs - State of the Product?

No, there is no price yet. I think a local PCIe drive would be better since a rather high end NAS would be needed to match the STR and IOps.

Now there is an IronWolf 110 SSD for the NAS. It reminds me of the SandStone technology years ago.

    Happy Holidays (2018)

The lowest common denominator films like that are very profitable and will continue to numb the minds. They are mostly for export and popular in Asian markets. Only 25-30% of the BO is in the US for those types nowadays.

    Happy Holidays (2018)

Yeah, like Russian Christmas, New Year, and Easter. I had to keep track of both dates. It seemed goofy to me in the 70s that the various regions could get their dates synchronized since 1582, but they still have not done so.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Is it worth getting the P4610 3.2TB over the P4510 4TB? The R/W transfer rates and read IOPs are about the same, but the write IO Pops are better for the P4610 with 200K than the P4510 with 114K.
  28. LunarMist

SSDs - State of the Product?

A 10TB drive is $300. Maybe they can make a 10TB SSD for 4x that eventually, but performance needs to improve beyond 80MB/sec.

SSDs - State of the Product?

The vast majority of consumers don't create anything requiring sustained writes and can live in the buffer. They just suck off the internet and occasionally send short video clips to the f*c*b**k, etc. The only thing they will care about is corrupted or lost data and they are already used to...
