What's the status of XP SP2?

SP2 "knackered" my Tiny Personal Firewall version 2. The latest versions of Tiny is too complicated for me to learn  So I reformated and went back to SP1. Cheers, Edward

    Yet more Evidence

Tea, my sentiments exactly! I posted here once where I uninstalled NAV2003 and totally lost my internet connection. Then I was not bothered to do a REGEDIT. So I just re-installed Windows. In my opinion, Symantec is becoming like Microsoft where "If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em out" Cheers, Edward

Roxio's got a brand new pig bag

Thanks Merc. I am seriously considering moving every computer at work that has a burner, over to Nero. It had been years since I had installed Easy CD-Cremator on any of my home computers. Cheers, Edward

Roxio's got a brand new pig bag

Where is Gary when you need him  I remember Gary telling his wonderful "war stories" about Easy CD-Cremator back the days when he was using it before Adapatec/Roxio bought it from Corel. The problem with me is that Easy CD-Creator OEM version is bundled with the computers at work. This...

    New Firefox out

I installed FireFor 0.9.1 on a newly reformatted computer (set it as default browser). Then I used it to go to Microsoft Office Download Center to download updates for MS Office. I found that all the text are jumbled together and all the icons are missing on the MS Office Download page. But...

Good Idea/Bad Idea: 7-in-1 USB Media Drive

Hi sechs, Is your laptop the IBM R50? The reason I ask is that I accidentally left a USB thumbdrive connected to my IBM T41 and rebooted my laptop. Upon reboot, my laptop tried to boot from the USB thumbdrive. Maybe your laptop can also boot from USB devices as well. Cheers, Edward

[NEWS] - Apple starts selling new 2.5GHz G5

I don't know, Merc. For computer-savvy people like we SF members (well, maybe not me  ), liquid coooling will be great for us to push the limits of the system. But for the average computer user who would not upgrade their systems for yonks, will it create long term problems like leakage...

    IBM ThnkPad R51

I "test drove" the IBM R51 and T41 before settling on the T41 because it is lighter. If you do not mind the 14.1 inch screen size then I would recommend the IBM over a Dell anytime (but then, I am probably biased against Dell  ) Cheers, Edward

    Thread revisited: Laptop recommendations

After "test-driving" several laptop brands (Toshiba, Fujitsu, IBM, Sony, Acer), I finally broke down and bought an IBM ThinkPad T41. I was deciding between the R51 and the T41 and in the end, chose the T41 because it is less heavy. Doing a side by side comparision with my T41 and my colleague's...

[NEWS] - Samsung to release UXGA 17" OLED display

I read from Xbit Labs this: "Epson showcased a prototype of 12.5” OLED monitor at the EDEX’2004 expo in Tokyo. There’s only one problem with this device – it takes this monitor only 1000 hours for the brightness to degenerate in two times."...

    non-Outlook mail clients

I second sechs on that. I was forced to switch from Eudora to Outlook at work although I still use Eudora at home. The latest version of Eudora has improved their importer to import from Outlook and Apple Mail. The junk/spam filter of Eudora is adequate for my needs. My NAV2004 also integrates...

    Should Rumsfeld keep his job?

My apologies for this slightly off-track question but I find it disturbing that the US military hires "contractors" to do the interrogation. When did this started? As Merc said, civilian contractors are not bound by US laws regarding prisoner treatment. Not only that, when the services of these...

Do your CRT's make noise in the middle of the night?

I can anytime be another example of Time's client/customer. I have NAV2004, Ad-Adware, Spybot and Trojan Remover. I update these programs regularly and Ad-aware still picks up suspicious "stuff". New car time ... confused

Hi Tony, Maybe the Forester is the way to go. I am not sure about the USA but here in OZ, we don't get good credit rating. We either get bad credit rating or none at all. Once you get a bad credit rating, you can kiss goodbye trying to get a loan and credit cards. Not only that, it is very hard to remove the bad credit rating.

Question regarding the "Driver" d/l's available on

On a related note, be cautious downloading the Microsoft sound drivers for your nForce 2 boards (in my case, Abit NF-7S). The Microsoft sound drivers totally messed up the onboard sound. [NEWS] - Maxtor new boosting software : Maxboost

I finally got a new hard drive (Maxtor) and tried this MaxBoost.
